True Value of #34. Hint: Think 2010

What is the true value of this year's #34?

To put it in a clearer way, how does this year's #34 parlay into 2010 picks? I think the answer is a first and a third. In my opinion, THAT is the true value of this trade. Not the cap room. Not the picks we already had. Not the depth of this draft. None of that nonsense which I actually find insulting to Bill Bellichick.

What do you think the value of this #34 pick is if we look at it in terms of what we can get as far as 2010 picks?

If anything I think the Patriots use #34 to get a guy who may have slipped out of the first round but with a first round grade.

I think their 2nd is the more likely pick to be traded for a first next year. #34 is perfect in terms of compensation given vs talent likely drafting.

I wanted to say 1st. and a 3rd. but went with 1st and 2nd because the depth of this draft will cause at least 1 team to see a guy they are crazy about and give up the farm for him.

have only 17 players signed beyond 2009. They face massive losses

to free agency in February 2010. What better time to stock up and

That's probably even more reason to parlay this #34 pick into 2 picks next year. The combination of a possibly uncapped NFL, so many upcoming free agents for the Pats, plus the economic recession makes draft picks simply too valuable at this point.

I know it's easy to feel we got hosed. It took me a while to get away from the feeling of getting shafted through the back door. I read all the comments and thought about it myself before coming to a conclusion and making a post.

And the conclusion is that this is not over yet. We have yet to see what happens with the #34 pick. We may pick a player with it, we may use it to move up in the first round, or we can parlay it to a first and 2nd/3rd in 2010.

Personally I am hoping for extra 2010 picks. All the reports say this draft is very deep, but draft reports are always a crapshoot. I'd not be surprised at all if when we get to the clock at #34, they announce that the pick has gotten dealt to a mediocre team for a 1st and 3rd next year, meaning a high to mid 1st and a high to mid 3rd.

Julius Peppers is also another possibility. People just need to wait and see what happens instead of yelling "hosed!" without wanting to think about it.

This is short sighted. The idea is to run a sustainable franchise. Also, how can you talk about lack of talent when we have just started free agency and haven't even drafted yet?

What sucks is that KC trades out of their 3rd and picks up 2 firsts or
easilly gets their 2nd back.

My guess is Gonzalez or LJ is available cheap to the Pats mid season if they need either player.

There are to many teams that would have given more.

And the Lions didn't do it. KC cuts Gonzalez or LJ and he misteriously ends up a Patriot later this year and the Pats don't have to absorb a stinker contract.

Pioli and BB talked shop on how to make this finacially feasible for both teams.

Thats why Vrable was traded vs cut. Saved cap space for the Pats. That had value

plus the Pats don't want to get stuck with the 3rd overall if they don't rate a player that high.

Daunte Culpepper with blown-out knee was

I've got a freaking headache.. Horrible trade... Just horrible..

All I hear is how BB is great at this and that.. Lets be honest, it wasn't a great deal.. It really wasn't.. Plus you lost your starting OLB.. I don't want to hear about him possibly being cut.. We don't know that.. Maybe he would have taken less money to stay.. Bottom line, BB and the pats lost out on this BIG time.. NFL is a QB driven league.. Its like pitching in Baseball.. You can NEVER have enough.. We got a early 2nd round pick..

I'm sick of hearing Michael Holley provide stories about how BB is a master mind on deals.. He isn't.. He's gotten fleeced a bunch of times.. Trading back last year 4 spots and getting a mid round pick in return is CRAZY (1st round).. Just a few years earlier the browns and another team made a similar move and the browns gave up an extra 2nd..
And how about the CB from Balt who was so bad he barely made it one year..

As a season tkt holder, I'm nervous that the offense is going to have to win all the games again.. And if that is the case, your wasting Bradys talent because as the 07 season proved, you win with DEFENSE..

Let's see how much D they get in this draft. With BB's tendancy to stock for the following year, I'd be surpirsed if all three #2s are used in this draft.

But, as was mentionned earlier, I do think they'll grab someone at 34 (or two to three slots lower) and move one the other#2s for 2010.

To be honest, I was glad to see the TE & RB pickups on Friday : it gave me hope that most if not all high draft picks will be used for defense.

Actually, a pick like this is the best value going. You get a first round talent (assuming it's someone you would have picked at 32) for second round money. Why trade that?

I voted as "other" because the pick is worth a 1st round pick this year! There are more than 32 players that are carrying 1st round grades this year. Meaning we will be getting two players that are worthy of being selected as 1st rounders and will help to sutain the team. I agree with Brarrell, Cassel was a 7th rounder that most of us thought would be cut at the end of training camp and got 1st round value for him. BB directed where Vrabel would go rather than letting him become a free agent and signing with a contender. He also helps his friend Pioli get credit for making a great trade.
