That it means they are close to a deal to trade Cassel?

Re: Do you think with the Patriots being active early....

these deals are relatively small........I think the cassel deal will be very close to draft day

Re: Do you think with the Patriots being active early....

If they were close with Cassel they wouldn't be spending time on other players. If a Cassel deal doesn't get done in the next few days we won't see any action until draft day.

Re: Do you think with the Patriots being active early....

It could happen any day but the moves thus far have not been big enough to mean anything.

You can spend every last dime you have right now because at some point you get back Cassels money and you can use that on the rooks and any re-ups of guys like Wilfork

Could be that Reese has been able to restructure some contracts and there's just been no announcements.

Yeah this was my initial thought too. With Baker and Taylor signed we would be really tight to the cap limit i think, so we probably indeed have restructured some contracts. I do expect the Pats to quickly trade Cassel to have some time left for other options.

Re: Do you think with the Patriots being active early....

this is what needs to happen......a 3-way deal between the pats, the broncos and the panthers (whatever way it gets done) the principals being cutler goes to the panthers (he is a perfect fit there), cassel going to the broncos (and playing for mcdaniels), and julius pepper coming to the pats

this is provided the contracts don't break any banks.......do it straight up.....do it now

Not gonna happen, mcdaniels deserves to be fired if he gets rid of cutler.

Re: Do you think with the Patriots being active early....

Who have the Pats signed? Although we don't have the numbers, does anyone expect Taylor or Baker to get anything more than modest short term contracts?

The Pats seem to be value shopping and cap room is easily cleared for that. Converting Brady's roster bonus would have been more than enough cap room to sign Taylor and Baker.

the problem is that cutler doesn't exactly line up with the schemes that mcdaniels has employed

could be big on incentives with these 2

At some point in time, it is likely McDaniels will have to do just that. There are a lot of rumblings in Bronco Nation about Cutler and his poor decision-making on the field.

This scenario presented (3-team trade) is interesting, but I don't know if all parties would agree.

We'll just have to see....:)

Re: Do you think with the Patriots being active early....

I'm not sure what it means, but I'm pleased and optimistic that the Pats have been aggressive early. Small moves, yes, but they round out the roster well:

- Fred Taylor gives us a mentor to Maroney, depth at RB, and a really strong RB-by-committee with Maroney-Taylor-Morris-Faulk (and possibly Green-Ellis). Deepest RB corps we have ever had. Taylor will be better for us than Lamont Jordan.

- Chris Baker gives us a solid blocking TE to complement Ben Watson, leaving Dave Thomas as our #3 option and DeVrees/Listorti as PS guys. Puts us in much better shape after 2009, when Watson and Thomas are both FAs.

The only real hole on the offense right now is at WR, where we currently have Moss, Welker, Aiken and Slater. We need at least one more solid WR - either resigning Jabar Gaffney or a FA - and probably a developmental WR in the draft.

That leaves us pretty much free to concentrate on the defense in the remainder of FA and the draft. We're already looking at CB options (Leigh Bodden). I expect one JAG FA CB and probably one in the draft, unless we get lucky and snare someone good unexpectedly.

The loss of Mike Wright would be a blow, but not a severe one. My guess is that LeKevin Smith would get more PT and we would move on. If Wright can be resigned at a reasonable deal, that would be great.

That leaves safety as our biggest hole, with only Meriweather currently on the roster. Certainly we need more bodies, either in FA (resign some combination of Sanders/Sanders/Harrison/Williams) or the draft.

Either way, we are in pretty good shape and can make moves from strength rather than from necessity in most areas.

That and Cutler is a douche-bag.

Re: Do you think with the Patriots being active early....

I think with all these early signing we getting ready to trade Cassel for Cutler :). (just going with the flow)

Well, with the uncapped year rules about incentives, I don't know if the Pats will be doling out many incentives this year. Maybe they are.
