The Patriots are scheduled to host free-agent CB Leigh Bodden on a visit at Gillette Stadium today, the first day of free agency.

The 6-foot-1, 193-pound Bodden played for the Lions last season after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Browns. He had a career-high six interceptions with the Browns in 2007 while playing under former Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

The Patriots have Ellis Hobbs, Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite as their top returning corners. Hobbs enters the final year of his contract in 2009, and adding personnel at the position -- through free agency or the draft -- would presumably be one of the Patriots' top items on the offseason agenda.

If he comes at the right price i think he would be a great addition, but i wouldn't pay big dollars for him. What concernes me is that i read somewhere no other team is interested in Bodden, he probably has lost a step. Maybe it's an advantage no one wants him and he'll come cheap.

People can't call this a JAG..he's great when in the right system. not his fault detroit stuck him in a cover 2.

I tend to agree, he doesn't turn 28 till 9/24. Before being traded to Detroit he was the Browns' best CB. I'm really not that concerned about his bad season for Detroit in 2008 because with Cleveland he was pretty good. Hard worker who has made himself a solid player after entering the league as an UDFA from Duquesne. Although he's only played all 16 games only once, last yr in Detroit, his toughness can't be questioned. Uses the jam effectively vs WRs and is a smooth player in transition. Good speed and aggression. Good tackler for his position and plays the run well. Clearly wasn't happy in Detroit last season. Had only int in the Lions secondary. Was playing better by season's end but there was no way Detroit was going to pay him $8.6 mil roster bonus. Browns traded him because of his outrageous contract demands.

Bodden was very good when he was in Cleveland. He is no Champ Bailey, but when he was in a system that is similiar to the Pats' system he was very productive. Considering no one in Detriot played all that well on defense, his lack of production could have been the system rather than the player.

If this is true, it is great for the Pats because Bodden's value is really low right now because of last year. They could get him on the cheap and rehab his career.

This would be a perfect for the secondary. It really needed a vet with starters ability and while Bodden may be a second tier free agent he has been a starter everywhere he has been. Hobbs and Bodden as starters sounds good to me especially with 2 young kids in Whilhite and Wheatly developing to take which ever one starting spot.

give me this and Rodney back and eerything else would be gravy

This would be perfect.

It would also give them more freedom in their draft plans. It will now give them the time they need to develop Wheatley & Wilhite, severely lessening the pressure to take a Day 1 CB. I would still expect a CB drafted, and if A. Smith or Moore or Butler are available in a spot that is deemed good value, I would still expect them to pull the trigger - but they wouldn't need to reach.

Of course, that's all if they sign him, so I'm getting ahead of myself

I was pretty shocked when the Browns moved Bodden, as he was developing into a very nice CB. Never understood that. Him disappearing in Detroit isn't cause for too much alarm I don't think, as others have mentioned, if Oakland is the Black Hole, Detroit must be the Gray Hole. (?)

I imagine they've scouted the ever-loving crap out of Bodden. He's coming for a visit, but it's a woo. Show him Lombardi's and a new truck. haha
