Who really believes there's going to be some major developments with cassel tomorrow, not only talking about a trade but major news about a potential trade going down and being worked out.

I think cassel knows it's a long shot of him staying with the pats, he his agent and the pats know the sooner the better for both sides.

I don't, it just never seems to happen that way with the Patriots.

Yeah I no what your saying but this year should be different it's in there best interest to get it done asap right?

I really doubt we will hear anything today. I think teams will wait out the Pats a bit. They start going to the Pats too quickly and the Pats won't budge from their asking price.

This is clearly different with the cap situation. But . . . it's still the Patriots so I'll believe it when I see it.

Teams know they can't keep Brady and Cassel with those contracts. I don't think anything happens until or around draft time. Patriots FA's don't exactly have the greatest track records elsewhere.

Fine by me. That Pats aren't going to be big spenders in FA anyway, and I'm sure BB and the FO will have a plan to make the necessary moves while keeping Cassel. The closer we get to draft time, the greater the asking price as teams realize that they are up a creek without a paddle.

But you wait to long and someone else gets him. Let the feeding frenzy begin fresh meat....fresh meat.....fresh meat

I think that they should deal him by the end of the weekend. Take advantage of the itchy triggers, get great value for him, clear up the cap space, go be a player in the market. There's some good tallent available this year.

Re: Ok who really thinks were going to hear major news on cassel first day of free ag

I stand by my opinion that BB wil not trade him until he KNOWS for a fact that Brady is back, as the REAL Brady, not some immobile tackling dummy. He will keep him until then, and maybe longer. Beside pursuing a Laombardi, you really need good depth a QB. The 2008 seaon example should prove that, even if draftniks don't think so, even while they worry about backup LS. ;)

If the NFL is entering a CAP-less environment, then in the previous capless era, the Montana-Young model kept the 49ers competitive for portions of two decades. It doesn't hurt Belichick at all to await the clarification after the 2009 season. His big FAs don't come due until then. If its CAPless he can sign them all, and also keep Cassel as the eventual heir-apparent.

Hopefully the sooner the better - the longer the dance goes on the less chance he has to find a dance partner. (and the price gets driven down). Because other teams also have many holes to fill and the longer free agency goes on - the more holes they fill lowering their free cap space. Teams in FA usually take care of the high money FA's first and then target the lower salaried players later.

I know this is not a great revalation. Just stating the obvious facts. Cassels agent has had time to negotiate with other teams (without tampering issues) when Pats declared him a non-exclusive franchaise player. And also time to secretly negotiate (as most agents do) during the combine.

If any teams are interested in meeting the high price - they would most likely do it within the first few days of FA. Sure- some will say they will just wait to drive the price down - but then they could lose out on him as there are at least a handful of teams with cap space and the need for a upgrade at QB. The desirable FA's don't last long ......(few days at most). The longer it takes - the lower the draft picks Pats will get.

The one possibility might be that Pioli has told BB / Matts agent what he will give (minimum offer) and if Cassel doesnt get above that offer from another team - then he hopefully will take the Chiefs minimum offer.

Nope .. unless we get a deal with Carolina

Re: Ok who really thinks were going to hear major news on cassel first day of free ag

It would be nice but I doubt anything happens for awhile. Teams are probably going to start by exploring the other cheaper options at QB before those who miss out turn to Cassel.

And, of course, if it is capped, then the Pats are guaranteed to lose some of their best players because they paid $14.6M to a guy who may not play at all.

If it doesn't happen in the next few days it won't happen until the draft imo. The Pats had 2 months to work something out, and teams aren't waiting to see if they can get the next best QB in FA as there really is nothing out there.

And they signed Bledsoe to a $100 million dollar contract in 2000 too. What does ancient history (the 2009 season), have to do with the post 2009 season, when SOME,not all of these guys may be FAs?

N-O-T-H-I-N-G !!

I'll just take this year's Lombardi and add it to the collection, S'il vous plait. The 2010 season will take care of itself. :D:D

Re: Who really thinks we're going to hear major news on Cassel first day of free agen

For some of you who think we will keep Cassel dont count on it!! We dont have the money to have 2 starting QB's that is taking up 30 mil in cap space! Also, everyone seems to forget about Kevin O'Connell. 3rd round draft pick and was the #2 QB for the Patriots last season. He is stronger, faster, and more accurate than Cassel. Also, he started all four seasons of college as well as being named Team captain his freshmen year!! He also has a season under the Patriots system now. So will Cassel be traded ASAP? YES!! Will we keep him? NO, he is out!
