Just listening to Sirius NFL Radio and a few minutes ago Pat was telling a Pats fan who called that while its not 100% certain, but from Pat Kirwan's friend who is a close source to the Pats team says that the Pats will be going hot and heavy after Panthers DE Julius Peppers when FA begins tomorrow.

Is a Matt Cassel for Julius Peppers trade straight up, possible?

I think Matt would be going to a Carolina team who is very good already and certainly capable of winning a title in the near future.

Well the money is about the same? Isn't Peppers getting about $12 mill with the tag?

Will he accept 3.2 million per year?

I imagine if any trade for the two players goes down, it will be predicated on both players signing new deals. There is no way either team takes the other player for the franchise tag money.

But Peppers sure would address that OLB issue :D

You know perfectly well that will go up by $15M+ once we trade Cassel.

If Carolina traded MC for JP straight up, that would say a lot about them. I don't see Carolina trading JP straight up for Matt, they can get way more for JP.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

It would be nice... but it brings 2 questions to mind.

1. Who will be standing up and playing OLB?
I am sure neither of our 2 current DE starters would want to, and who is to say that Peppers would be good at that spot. If it was a sure bet, wouldn't they have been starting a pass rushing DE like Jarvis green at OLB when we were depleted. This of is barring an injury.

2. how would this help our cap?
Basically its a very close cap hit. Which leaves us dangerously near the cap. How will we sign anybody else we need? And before anybody says it....I find it very unlikely for him to sign a new cap friendly deal.

almost 17 mill w/ the tag--over 20 if they choose to tag him again next yr

kinda surprised by some of these rumors today for these bigger money guys

Wouldn't Peppers require Jared Allen type money? Payroll is tight already and the Pats don't even have a legitimate corner.

That's where we'd just have to trust Belichick that he can make Peppers as an OLB work. Who knows, but the odds are with Belichick if he thinks Peppers can do it.

We'd require Peppers to sign a long term deal with would be costly over the contract but well under $15M for the first year so we'd clear a lot of money.

I agree it would cost a lot and I'm highly skeptical, but the thinking behind signing a top-tier pass rusher like Peppers is that you then don't need elite talent at the corner; you just non-Deltha-O'Neal talent.

We still have gobs of draft picks to get a CB - and if we ever got our pass rush back we wouldn't need the CB to be as good. If we got him, Peppers would make our CB better.

If Carolina traded MC for JP straight up, that would say a lot about them. I don't see Carolina trading JP straight up for Matt, they can get way more for JP.

A potential franchise QB that could put them over the top in a wide-open and weak NFC? I They should have been beat the Cardinals in the playoffs this past season (and possibly gone on to the NFCCG and Super Bowl), if not for the poor play of Delhomme in the wild card game.

I don't know if you can do better than that. I might send them a 3rd rounder or something too if it takes that to get it done. But this is a blockbuster and honestly I think the Patriots would find some way to make it work under the cap.

Obviously, I am being sarcastic. On another thread I stated that

I hope they trade Cassel ASAP. Being realistic, I think the Pepper's

thing may be a little far fetched. My expectations for free agency

are that the Patriots will re-sign a few of their own players.

I think in this deal both teams could do better in draft picks in a different trade but neither is guarenteed to get a player of the caliber of Peppers or Cassel. So that is a tough call but goes both ways.

I also heard Kirwin talking about this he said a trusted source of his has hot in the Peppers market which by Peppers is only a 4 team list.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

Kirwan and Belichick are fairly close. He might have inside information.

Personally, I am hesitant to give up what it will take in draft picks (or Cassel) and salary for a guy who is transitioning to a new position in the Pats' defense. But Belichick knows far more than I and Peppers has proven more than a Vernon Gholston who has failed miserably so far to make the transition from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB.

Less of a risk than a rookie though because you know at the very least you have a really good pass rusher. Meaning he wont be a complete bust even if he didn't work as an OLB. I think Jarvis is a FA next year or the year after so he could take that role as worst case scenario (plus it would be more expanded for Peppers talent). But I also don't think it is as crazy a transition for a pro with the skill set he has Your playing end with a hand up and some extra responsibilities in passing.

Re: Pat Kirwan says his close source to the team says NE will be bidding hard for Pep

it has to be a cassel for peppers deal if it goes down, unless the pats have a deal for cassel set up already with another team to clear his 14mil dollar cap hit

Not only that, I can't see the Pats coughing up 2 first round picks to sign Peppers, anyone for that matter.

JP is an all pro DE, Cassel is a QB that has one good NFL season. He may be a great QB down the line, but we don't really know that to be the case. If the Pats could pull this off (getting Pepper for Cassel straight up), it would be almost like getting Moss for a 4th.
