This corps is really depleted. The only people there are Brandon Meriweather, Antwan Spann, Ray Ventrone and Matt Slater. Harrison is coming off another major injury and is a UFA. James Sanders is a UFA and will probably get more money from another team. If not, I’d gladly welcome him back.

Abram Elam – NY Jets – arguably one of the Jets best players in their secondary
Mike Brown – Chicago – Good SS.
Sean Considine – Philadelphia – Good enough to keep Lito Sheppard on the Bench. Also allowed Philly to let Troy Vincent go.
Will Demps – Houston – I wanted the Pats to sign him when he left Baltimore. Instead he had signed with the Giants. Then he moved on to Houston where he had 2 injury plagued years. I’d look at him if he’s healthy.
Sean Jones – Cleveland – Its been speculated that BB wanted to draft this kid. He’d instantly solidify the Safety position with the Pats then able to rely on the draft for depth here.
Jim Leonhard – Baltimore – 2 years ago, Leonhard did everything for the Bills. Special teams. Played Safety. Played Linebacker. Last year, he was a jack of all trades for the Ravens. This guy is everything that people have been hoping Ventrone could be. I’d love to see him in a Pats uniform.

Is SS Bell of Miami still a UFA? He fits the BB FA model because he is a ST Demon and could also contribute in the base defense if a starter goes down

Too bad he played safety.

I think that was BOR's point.

And I don't see Williams being a fit on the Patriots. Too much of a free lancer.

I know, I really just wanted to rub it in because I can't stand the guy. And no, I cannot imagine a scenario where he would be brought in by Belichick.

Dewan Landry from Baltimore could be a good pickup as well..

True.. Though he is a RFA and expected to receive a 1st and 3rd tender.

After looking at your list, and the need for 2-3 safeties, I would expect us to offer much
more to James Sanders than most posters here would be happy with. I also expect us to be interested in Sean Jones.

Depleted is an understandment. As of now, Spann is our starter at safety. How amy reps did Ventrone and Slater have at safety between them?

I'd love Jones, but I anticipate he will be pretty costly.
Mike Brown was really productive, but cannot stay on the field. A one-year minimum type deal would make sense on the Patriot's behalf.

Atari Bigby anyone?

RFA 2nd rounder

Jabril Wilson?

Are you kidding me? Sanders better not be offered much more than vet min. If he's asking more than 2M, it's better to go after a better player like Sean Jones instead. There's also always the draft for safety needs. And they'll be cheaper too.

But asking a rookie safety to be able to come in and RUN this secondary is a recipe for failure. As many have pointed out, Sanders has grown into the ability of calling the secondary plays. I seem to remember a LOT of people knocking the contract that Jarvis Green got because he was "only a pass rush specialist." Of course, he proved to be more than that, but that didn't stop people from bagging on him..

As you pointed out Sanders did it....Eugene Wilson also did it. The right guy could do it especially if we have Vet Starters like Hobbs, Bodden, and Merriweather around him and maybe even Rodney back to help him.

Sanders was not calling plays in the secondary as a rookie. Wilson didn't call plays in the secondary as a rookie either. In both cases, Harrison was the one calling the plays. And, in the case of Sanders, when he played his rookie year because Harrison went down, Wilson was the one calling the plays. And Wilson didn't do a very good job of it.
