Sources close to Eric Alexander, who is currently out of the country, have indicated that the linebacker and team have agreed in principle to a one-year contract, with bonuses.

Alexander, a member of the Patriots the past four seasons, was a restricted free agent. He played in just the season opener last year before ultimately being placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

The Pats could have offered a low tender, at $1.01 million, or not tendered him, making Alexander an unrestricted free agent. Instead, the two sides have agreed on a new one-year deal that is lower than the tender.

Alexander agrees to deal

I think this is a good deal. $1 million seemed like too much for Alexander, but I'm glad to have him back for his ST play.

alexander is a waste of space

Yep. I don't believe this guarantees him a spot at all, but a healthy Alexander is still an excellent STer.

I think he's solid depth. Not everyone is a superstar when it comes to the depth chart.

Thank freakin god!

He is not a waste of space on ST. I agree with others that his spot is not guaranteed, but this deal is good whether we decide to keep him or not.

"eh." more clearly, "eh." As long as he never, ever covers Dallas Clark again......ack, he's just not worth getting worked up about one way or the other.

No one says he'll make the team. At least he'll get a chance to compete for a spot.

I think the only reason he was brought back was to give him a chance to earn his spot back on Special Teams. He's been injured in each of the last two years and hasn't given much to the team. And, considering the Pats have Guyton now, Alexanders will be in for the fight of his life.

Though, with Izzo not re-signed yet and no idea if he will be re-signed, that does open up a space on the roster.

true that, but anyone who can't play their position is a waste of space to me............and he can't play LB....bet then again, neither could izzo......

I hope BB gets the message soon then, maybe he can back out of the deal.

since you're a card carrying member of the coaches underwear brigade, why discuss anything? just get up every morning and say 'BB is right'

Is Lonnie Paxton a waste of space? That guy hasn't done anything but long snap in years! Gotta have a few specialists lying around.

But I agree with others. This doesn't guarantee him a spot, but gives us a measuring stick for rookies trying out on ST.

Excellent as ST - Sucks as a LB - One trick pony, but below $1M is doable

clark? he couldn't cover fletcher or moorehead, either

Oh I know..........the backside image of #52 chasing JAG or even starting TE's at the RCA Dome is an image, I'll never forget..........

Re: Patriots agreed to terms with ILB Eric Alexander on a one-year deal

Alexander's position is special teams. He can play that position well.

How well did Washington play at WR last year. How well did Ventrone play whatever "position" he had on the depth chart, WR I think? What about Slater? I suppose Redd was a fine linebacker, and Spann a fine defensive back.

Allocate 6-8 players to Special Teams and be done with it! My list is
Gostkowski, a deep snapper, a punter, Aiken, Slater, Ventrone, and Alexander. If someone can beat them out as a special teamer, they can have the roster spot.
