3 round post-Combine Mock (Controversial?)

#23 Round 1 Connor Barwin OLB/TE
Previously I had Barwin ranked as a 2nd round pick based on the good things I heard about his abilities, his size, and his added versatility as a TE. Barwin stock just skyrocketed after the Combine where he showed off some eye popping athleticism. This kid's ceiling is very high. He's worth taking a shot on in the first round. Consolation prize: Sintim or Alphonso Smith. If Barwin is gone by 23, we can go with a different linebacker or one of the best ballhawks in this year's draft.

#47 (SD) Round 2 Sean Smith S/CB
Smith is an intriguing tweener with excellent size (6'4), who offers the versatility to play at S or CB. I think that he's more of a safety at the NFL level. But with this guy playing centerfield on the Pats defense, it will be very hard to go over the top. Consolation prize: Patrick Chung or Chip Vaughn. If we're lucky, Delmas but I think he'll be gone in the 1st, thus I had us taking Sean Smith.

#58 Round 2 Darius Butler CB
Butler displayed excellent feet and agility in the drills and had an ok 40 time at 4.53 but not impressive for a CB. That's why he might still be around in the second for the Pats to take. This is a guy who I can see staying with the quick receivers because of his footwork. Consolation prize: Jairus Byrd. Butler gets the nod for a more impressive combine showing. What have you done for me lately?

#89 Round 3 Murtha Lydon OT
Very impressive, athletic tackle. There wasn't a lot of buzz about Lydon before the combine, but his stock will definitely rise. I'm not even sure if he will last to the 3rd round. Consolation prize: James Casey or Shawn Nelson. If there's no offensive line upgrade available, look for the Patriots to draft BB's pet position.

Greene is not a speed merchant. I think we all knew that going into the combine. His 4.65 drops him down to the 3rd round. He still makes for an impressive battering ram/goal line back for the Patriots, and I do believe he has the talent to beat out Heath Evans for the powerback/short yardage role. Consolation prize: Andy Levitre or Trevor Canfield. This is assuming we don't get Lydon or Greene. Investing youth in the OL is a good idea particularly with the lack of depth and Neal's brittleness.

How does someone go from UDFA to 3rd round. That would be pretty bad scouting for someone to move up that much.

Nice draft. Some thoughts and comments are posted below. But first, two thoughts:

- The first 3 rounds have 96 picks, so if we get a 3rd round comp pick for Samuel it will likely be 97-98 or so, not 120. 120 is in the middle of the 4th round, so it wouldn't be a comp pick at all.
- With our likely comp picks, and the depth of this draft, I could see us packaging our 3rd and 4th round picks to move up and grab another highly rated player. According to nfldraftcountdown's chart, 89 + 122 would get us to around 78 or so.

I agree with you about liking Delmas and possibly taking him at 23, but right now I'm still undecided between him and Sean Smith at 23. I didn't get to see Smith in all of the agility drills, but from what I saw he had a nice backpedal and flipped his hips well. Haven't seen his shuttle or 3-cone times.

While I like Delmas a lot, "will be our best defensive player three years down the line" sounds awfully optimistic. I see Wilfork and Mayo being our 2 best players in that timeframe, and Mayo being our defensive field general and captain. I'd be happy for a secondary captain and think Meriweather may grow in to that role, but best defensive player seems a bit much to hope for at this time.

Totally agreed, just not sure we can get him at 47. Might need to trade up. Clint Sintim would be a good consolation prize and might fall to here at this point.

As with Barwin, a trade up might be in order here. It's possible that Alphonso Smith or DJ Moore may fall a bit and become available in the 2nd round as well. I'd still take Alphonso Smith over Butler at this point - his feet and ball skills should make up for the deficit in speed and height. Jarron Gilbert could also be an option here (see below).

I like Trevor Canfield more than Urbik, and think we might get him at the end of the 3rd round, so I'll be optimistic and try for a trade up combining 89 and 122 to move up for:

6'5, 288# with a 4.87 40. Somewhat raw. Not quite as explosive as expected from his pool jumping youtube, but still seems like a great potential 3-4 DE prospect. This is probably optimistic, but there was already optimism built in to you draft, so why not continue it?

Heath is the No 1 guy to come out in blocking when faulk is not in their or we are facing bigger OLB who faulk it too small to handle.any info on how his blocking is and can he beat heath in one OT as far as blocking goes.
i will amazed as even maroney does not do this or jordan or morris .

I still think there is a very good chance he is there for the pats at #47

the combine factor will wear off in light of never having played where people are primarily placing him.....any FO who knee-jerks over combines also has micheal johnson ahead of him right now

What's wrong with looking at their tools? Any prospect needs tools to compete at the pro levels. Besides this you're making an overgeneralized statement. Have you even examined their draft profiles?

Sean Smith - 9 interceptions and 15 pass deflections in the past 2 seasons. First-team All-Mountain West pick in 2008.

I think your main problem is with Barwin in the 1st round. And Barwin has been discussed to death, both his merits and his downfalls.
I hardly think the players I've selected in this mock draft have ONLY tools and no college production.
Barwin by the way had 10 sacks last season at the collegiate level. How's that for production?
