I read this and found it pretty crappy. Esp. the running backs part, and all the numbers were wrong.

Hah they probably got unofficial numbers then that's just great

Actually, the numbers they are using came from one or more NFL people directly involved in evaluating the prospects for their teams - those are the numbers they will be writing in their reports, not the "official" times provided to all the teams from the Combine committee. I'd say those are more realistic numbers to weigh.

How are they more realistic? These numbers are all under the official numbers, which makes them suspect.

When you look at your recording of the Combine, note the "stack" of scouts seated above the finish line, all holding a stopwatch. I seriously doubt they are using their own stopwatches because they trust the official numbers. I also point to today's coverage when the camera was focused on NYG HC Tom Coughlin with Rich Eisen & Co. talking about Coughlin timing the ten yard splits on the DBs. There are official times for the 10 yard splits too, yet Coughlin was using his own stopwatch...

One of my favorite movie lines from recent years came from the movie Serenity: 'Want some advice from an old tracker? When you're looking for something, use your eyes.' Seems NFL people live by that standard.

This is maybe why so many NFL scouts have been making combine blunders. I trust electronics over an old man's eyes.

One reason, though, that I would want a handheld timer is to compare these player's times to those of past players who were also timed the same way.

If the NFL decides to have electronic timing for both the start and finish, then the scouts can slowly phase out the old methods and get real.

I'm a big PSU fan, but if it's true that Deon Butler ran a 4.25, thus surpassing a roided up Ben Johnson, then I'll jam the band leaders baton down my throat and hum the PSU fight song.
