I don't expect Cassel to go there but Lovie has been saying this all offseason while the GM is the one seemingly not as locked in on Orton.

as for the actual content, orton didnt do bad last season, but he didnt to amazing either....hes more of an above avg game manager (or he was last season, this season he may be the derek anderson)....no team will come out right now and say they want cassel.....but well see

No need to welcome them. They've been there for quite some time. Probably the worst "Super Bowl team" I've ever seen. That team lived by defense and special teams and died by their offense. Looks like that trend will continue.

I think the Bears were always a long shot. They seem committed to mediocrity at the QB position. It could be just posturing, but I suspect they actually are willing to go with Orton given how long it took them to give up on Rex Grossman.

It's just amazing to me how stupid teams are acting. QB remains the most important position in the NFL. TB and the Jets collapsed and missed the playoffs, with poor QB play contributing. Minnesota would have been poised to go far in the playoffs with solid QB play. Chicago would likely have made the playoffs as well. In contrast, the Pats finished the regular season 4-0 behind stellar QB play from Cassel and finished with a better record than any of those teams, only missing the playoffs on a tiebreaking quirk. It's hard to envision Cassel allowing the losses to Oakland and Houston that put TB and Chicago out of the playoffs, or a 5-interception meltdown like Delhomme had against Arizona. San Francisco could actually be a contender in the weak NFC west with a QB like Cassel.

Arizona is reportedly willing to offer Kurt Warner more than $10M a year. Warner played well last year but he will be 38 in June, and it's not clear how much longer he can hold up for an entire season. Cassel is 26 and is likely to get better.

I think there's probably a lot of posturing going on right now, but the level of stupidity is somewhat staggering.

Never thought they were a serious possibility anyway. You can't just look at any team that doesn't have a Pro Bowl QB and think they're interested.

I don't buy any postering right now. If the Bears are in the Cassel sweepstakes, they need to let people know that they are happy with their QB situation. It helps their bargaining power.

I didn't think the Bears would be a major player, but Jerry Angelo and Belichick are friends so who knows if they can get a deal done.

Thats only true if theres only one bidder. If theres multiple bidders, than how happy they are doesn't make a damn difference.

I never considered the bears a buyer. They have too many issues on offense. I had the impression that people looking to snap up Cassel are looking for the final piece. Cassel would also be going from an offense with numerous weapons and a great scheme to an offense that has been crap for an eternity.

That's not to say Cassel isn't an upgrade, but Orton isn't bad enough that they should cough up picks that would be decent wideouts.

I'm living in Chicago, and Orton looks pretty decent. Hes definitely not the problem with their offense right now (the line and the WRs are). He had some trouble at the end of the season, which could be a bad sign, but hes definitely better than Rex, and has some upside.

If I'm chicago, I give him another year to evaluate him, and try to get some talent around him before the defense falls apart.

First, the Pats will never let on how many bidders are actually involved. They will always let any suitor know that there is a lot of interest in Cassel even if there is none. It will be in the Pats' best interest to let the perception be that there is a ton of interest without allowing anyone know who is bidding so they can compare notes.

Second, even if there is multiple suitor's it is in the suitor's best interest that they aren't really that interested in trading for Cassel unless they get a good deal. This goes back to my first point. Teams dealing with the Patriots won't know if they are bidding against multiple suitors or themselves. The more interest they show, the more the Pats can play suitors off one another or themselves.

Besides, the Bears at this point may not know what the level of interest from other teams will be.

Thats true, until you get to the end of the process. THen you take the top bid to each one of the other teams and see if they can do better. If not, you take the top bid.

That comment means nothing. Coaches will always go out of their way to give a vote of confidence to a player who needs it. They will often do it with the guy they are trying to upgrade, in case the deal doesnt ggo through.
Whether or not the Bears were interested in Cassel, this comment doesnt shed any light on the truth.

I don't know. Its very possibly true. But I think its impossible to evaluate the QB position in CHI without first upgrading the WRs.


Orton looks good (to me) for a guy with limited starts. Hes, honestly, may be the best QB in that division...ugh..thats sad.

Keep in mind that Lovie Smith isn't calling the shots in Chicago after last year but Jerry Angelo. Angelo is friends with Belichick and has done business with him in the past. So the protestations of Smith about Orton who hasn't proven anything in his time in Chicago may just be for show.
