From Chris Gasper:

Bucs HC Morris:
"No question. To win that many games as a first-year starter, you definitely deserve credit," said Morris. "You deserve as much credit as anybody in this league. He made those guys competitive, and we all wrote him off that first game of the season."

Chiefs HC Haley:
But at least one coach of a team that could potentially be in the market for a quarterback, Todd Haley of the Chiefs, said he thought punishing Cassel for being successful in the Patriots' system was patently unfair.

"I think that's unfair because that's all we know," said Haley, who has the added benefit of having former Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli as his boss in Kansas City. "He did what he had to, to succeed in what they asked him to do. I know that they adjusted to some of his abilities. They didn't play exactly the way they played with Tom Brady, so I think that's probably an unfair statement to say somebody is a 'system quarterback,' especially in that case because they're a game-plan team that changes from week to week."

"They're not a West Coast team that is running the same plays 20 times a game. I think there are some West Coast guys that are more system quarterbacks, but not Cassel, from what I see."

Flattery might get them a pick in return, so why not? ;)

I wonder if Haley might be 'softening' up the KC fanbase towards Cassel

OK, so where is the tampering line? These guys can talk him up if they want, they just can't say they'd sign him?

I think that's a large part of it. Evidently, it's OK to comment on a player's abilities as long as nothing you say can be construed as explicit interest in signing him. That's what I believe, but I'm not an expert on tampering (or anything else, for that matter).

Coaches comment on the performance of players on other teams every week, all season long: "Coach, can you say a few words about what XX means to your opponent's defense..." And Cassel is under contract, just like Brady or any other Pats player.

Yeah, and it's almost always positive. The only time I've heard BB dis an opponent was when he said (tongue-in-cheek) that Chad Johnson was one of the best holders in the league.

Tampering, what tampering? It would be tampering if we didn't like what they said. :D

I remember 2 others. Freddy Mitchell after the SB against the Eagles, and the Steelers' safety who said Pitt would beat the Pats in '07 during their regular season game. I can't remember his name, but Brady beat him deep to Gaffney, I believe, after he (Brady) received that pass/lateral back from Moss.

Anthony Smith--"The safety play at that position was pretty inviting," said BB. Brady also burned him on the TD to Moss.

And even Brady was mocking him after the game. :D

Here's a nice Globe article on Cassel's situation which incorporates the McDaniels, Morris and Haley insights:

For some teams, Cassel could be viable option - The Boston Globe

I think teams are deluding themselves if they expect to have the kind of success which Baltimore and Atlanta had with Flacco and Ryan with rookie QBs. Cassel has his strengths and weaknesses, and he is still evolving, but he offers a much surer thing and a much more prepared QB with a greater ability to succeed right away than any draft prospect. It's amazing to me to see teams go after low-end options with little history of success or much greater risk than Cassel - Kitna, Hill/Alex Smith, Michael Vick, etc.

That would be the article I posted. ;)

Sorry, I looked to see if it had been posted, and must have missed it. My mistake.

While the quotes were all old, I thought the article did a nice job of stringing them together and offering a good overall perspective of the Cassel situation. My bad for duplicating your post.

JC, thanks. I've been racking my brain trying to remember his name and it's been driving me nuts. I drew such a blank that I even went to the Steelers' roster and nothing there even jogged my memory. Aging s**ks...
