Did Brady's frankness possibly hurt the Patriots in Cassel trade negotiations?

I would say no, unless we go past the draft with Cassel still on the team then it would.

It may actually increase it. Teams that know that Brady is (coming) back now have to anticipate bidding early on Cassel vs later. The later Cassel is traded, the more teams will have settled their QB situation. If the trade happens earlier rather than later, more teams will have a hat in the ring.

i doubt it will hurt. if a team wants cassel, im sure they can have him. but they arent evaluating whether or not to trade for him based on brady's health. they are basing it based on Cassel's abilities. SNY has a bunch of morons on their network

Young is thinking that teams are looking at this by thinking that if this is true and Brady is ready for camp or even sooner, then the Pats want no part of keeping two high priced QBs and will take whatever they could get with a reasonable offer from other teams interested in Cassel to loosen the cap $$ - interesting way of looking at it

I would agree with Her premise if there was only one team that was in dire need of a Quarterback but as We all know there are at least 5 teams and maybe as many as ten or twelve teams that have a need to upgrade the Quarterback position. All The Patriots need is two or three bidders and up goes the price.Let the bidding begin.

A smart team, that is in need of a QB, will be glad Brady is seemingly fine and coming back. Their chances of landing the top available QB is greater that way.

If they are smart, they will realize their choices boil down to over the hill, has been that never will be vets or unproven rookies (none close to what was there last year) and one franchise QB, just sitting there for the taking.

My guess is the bidding has already begun and I would not be one bit surprised to see the deal cut on the first day the trade can be finalized.

Since injury talk is taboo with the Pats, one has to assume that this talk is being considered "a help" in Foxboro.

I am sure that even TB would have some framework to discuss an injury. Also, he would help out MC because higher compenation for the Pats should correlate to a better contract for MC.

Silly notion. It would only be true if there was one team that might go after him. If the Pats want Cassel, they'll keep him. If he's available, he's available. Brady could be walking on crutches and that wouldn't change anything.

I think the upside is, what Brady and Bob Kraft have been saying is this: "Fellas, you better get your bids ready, because the window won't be open long."

This only hurts the Patriots if there is only one team willing to trade for Cassel; however, there will be more than one.

No, not at all. If we read carefully what he said, he said he's doing great and wants to come back and feels he's on track to come back...but never says he's sure he will be back on opening day...in fact, he expresses frustration at how much is out of his control. I read the entire interview very differently than many here. Thought it was good but not definitive news...

I think that if Tom felt that there was any possibility of a setback before camp and that he did not think he was going to be ready for TC then he would be slowly working out and then resting daily trying to strengthen his leg and stay away from any media type activity like he did in this interview

It does not make sense that if Tom were not expected to be back early would he then be allowed by his doctors to play golf and take a chance on a setback and missing another season - I believe he is on track for TC unless he hurts himself by falling or another accident before then

I don't think this is a case of loose lips at all. I think TFB was just following the script.....this is perfect timing from the Patriots point of view as 32 HC's and their scouting staff head off to the combine...it puts Cassel right in the spotlight as those in need are evaluating the college quarterbacks on display.
Check out Christopher Price as to the hot topic in Indianapolis.

Brady's statement will prompt someone to ask about a trade this week for sure. The Patriots are no doubt hoping for several more.

Yeah because we all here in these forums have figured out BB's rouse but the other teams in the NFL are all completely fooled. Please people, teams will not negotiate based on anything other than their own evaluation of a player and their own needs.

SMY makes a good point in her article today,BB needs to tell Tom to hush hush unless its already too late

Will Tom Brady's frankness depress the market for Matt Cassel? | New England Patriots | projo.com | The Providence Journal

I dont understand.
Why would Brady's health even matter?
If they are negotiating a trade for Cassel they intend to trade him, so whether Brady is healthy or not doesnt really matter.
Why would the team trading FOR Cassel change their opinion of his value based on Brady's health? I really want Cassel, but only if the Patriots need him to? If Brady is healthy then I dont want Cassel as much? It makes no sense to me.

On top of all of that, does anyone really think that another team would believe that if rumors were floated that Brady was doing badly in rehab and won't play next year, but BB is trying to trade Cassel, that BB would really do so?

Conspiracy theory at its worst.

If anything it helped because while Brady would ready for week 1, Cassel would just be a proven QB on the bench when he could be on a QB less team: Vikings, Bears, Bucs, Lions, or even the 49ers

The train of thought (the validity of which I'll not assess) is this: Cassel's cap hit is so high that, if Brady is all but certain to come back, the Patriots will be forced to dump him. Of course, since the Patriots can't dump his salary (now that he's agreed to the tender), other teams might be able to stiff the Patriots.

Of course, there's still the possibility that if they don't get what they want, the Pats keep him for 2009 and sign him to a more practical long-term deal that lets them trade him in 2010. . . .

The premise behind the article is to illustrate that if the other teams hear Brady is doing well then they would expect NE would be more apt to taking any decent offer before it got too late than none at all and risk keeping 30M on the cap with 2 QBs - But if it is more than one team interested then a trade would become auction-like

I have no idea if Brady was being frank about his injury or saying what 99.99999% of injured players say when asked about how their rehab is going. Neither does anyone else so I doubt the Pats or other GMs are basing anything on what a player coming off a major injury said at a charity function.

It has nothing to do with Matt Cassel's trade value. If they are willing to trade him because Brady is healthy or if they are willing to trade him because they think it is the best move for them to trade him and play O'Connell wouldn't change that Cassel is available. That is all the rest of the league would know or care about.
