YouTube - Jarron Gilbert jumps out of pool

At the end of the day, it has as much to do with football as throwing through the goalposts on one knee....but there are many Gilbert fans here, so I thought I'd post to this amazing feet of strength/athleticism...

I don't know who Jarron Gilbert is but that was freaking impressive.

On one hand, it's just a silly YouTube video.

On the other hand, for a 287-lb lineman it may be more relevant than a 40 time. :)

Maybe they should start measuring vertical leap out of a pool at the combine.

I call horse hockey on this one. Consider:
- The water is 36 inches deep. The edge of the pool is even higher.
- He not only had to get 36+ inches straight up, he had to go 2 feet or so forward.
- He didn't swing his arms back to front like you normally do in vert testing. In fact, did the exact opposite. Try jumping up using his technique. You won't set any height records.
- He never stands up in the water, showing how deep the water actually is.

The record vert at the combine is 46 inches. If the video is legit, dude pulled close to that. Through water. Using a technique that is counter to what you would do to maximize height. And didn't seem to be straining himself.

If Gilbert tests in the 40's this weekend, then screw the video...that will be impressive enough for me. If he tests below 36 inches on the biggest job interview of his life. Straight up. Through air. Using sound techniques. Then that proves the video is garbage.

Man I think it is real but technique had a lot to do with that feat. Just like a power clean if you are very flexible with good explosion and technique you can do a high amount of weight.

It looks like your numbers are about correct he is in around 33-36 inches of water. When he explodes up he bends his knees so his feet are up at 42 inches but where he has such knee bend it is actually only 30-32 inches. He then uses balance and technique to get onto the side of the pool but this is still an impressive feat for a big man. Other then explosion of the ball out of his stance is the only way this would translate on the field.

I am going to look like an idiot trying to duplicate this feat tomorrow at the YMCA. I will let you know how I make out:D:D

Didn't say the video wasn't real...just saying that if it is real, I'm not buying the fact that he is in 3 feet of water. Either on a step, an incline or something on the bottom of the pool. When you are at the YMCA, try doing this from a step in the shallow end. Start from the bottom step (making it seem like you are deeper) and as you get going shift your feet to a higher step and launch yourself up from there. You might actually have a chance.

Like I said...if dude pulls a 28 inch vert at the combine, it really won't matter what he can or can't do in a pool. 36 inch vert? Now I'm paying attention. 40+ inch vert? At his weight? That is just sick.

Well first off I cleared the pool to avoid any embarrassment:D:D

I watched the video a couple of times this morning so I was sure to duplicate the process. Back when I was a top shape in University and my couple of years in the CFL my top vert was 31 inches at 240lbs. Needless to say in two years I did not think I would lose 5 inches but I tested myself at 26 inches now today at 245lbs(knee surgeries take their toll).

First of all it, takes guts to do as I banged my shin's pretty hard my first attempt. Which as a football players I was not going to give up right there I tried it 3 more times. Needless to say I should have stopped at one because this takes great athleatic ability as well as explosion. The toughest part is trying to swing you legs up through the water to catch yourself on the ledge. If the ledge was 8 inches shorter I may have had a chance:)

I'm pretty sure this makes Gilbert the #1 defensive lineman when submerged in a pool and attempting to jump out. But other than that.... Huh? :p

If I was able to duplicate his feat this morning I was going to try to get a FA tryout:D:D:D I am sure he has his own intangibles but this was a great show if explosion.

Jumping out of a pool and squatting a few pounds is nice, but what can he do on the football field. I don't seem to recall him tearing it up, even when considering the conference he played in?????

I did not say this kid is a first rounder. His name is being thrown around alot but I do know that jumping out of a pool does not translate in to a top lineman. Just saying it looked impressive.

When I caught San Jose State games his name was constantly being called. He did lead the FBS with 22 TFL. He also had 9.5 sacks and 5 QBH. There is a one year wonder risk, but I think this kid has what it takes and would develop nicely under Pepper's tutelage. His pappy played OT for New Orleans.

I think you are confusing what he did with what a vertical measures. Getting your feet 46 inches off the ground does not mean you did a 46 inch vertical. You bend your knees to get your feet higher than you actually vertically jump.

Did you ever see Adrian Wilson jump over a 66 inch hurdle? He didn't do a 66 inch vertical. Same thing in this case.

I think the video is legit. And it is damn impressive. Not sure it makes him an All Pro DL.

I didn't state my point clearly. He didn't just jump straight up (like he will do at the combine). He had to clear the edge of the pool and land a couple of feet ahead of where he started. Without doing the trig work or figuring in the effect of gravity over that distance, he surely had to get higher than a corresponding jump straight up and down.

He started on his feet and landed on his feet so not sure how his feet didn't travel close to 36 inches (the supposed depth of the pool). Add in the edge of the pool and the fact that he moved both vertical (36+ inches) and horizontal (24 inches or so) and that is the rough equivalent of a 40+ inch vert. Through water. With counter-productive technique.

Like I said, if he pulls a 40+ vert at the combine, I'll be impressed regardless of his pool exploits. Gholston was a workout warrior and only pulled a 35 or so. Gilbert himself says he has been measured at a 39 inch vert.

However, if he goes significantly under 40 at the combine, I'm not sure how you can't question the pool trick. Which makes you question what kind of a person goes on a media blitz to promote a phony stunt.

By the way, I'm not questioning the video itself. It seems perfectly legit. I'm questioning the depth of the pool where he starts the jump. Funny the video doesn't show him standing up staight so we could see how deep the water was. Hmmm...

When they measure a vertical, they have the person reach with their hand as high as they can reach. Set that as their base and then have them jump. They measure the absolute height of the hand. HOWEVER, if the person jumping crouches their feet up as high as they can, their feet go way higher than the actual vertical meaurement. That's why Wilson went 20 inches higher than the record vertical jump. I think that accounts for Jarron's jump.

If Wilson had jump up onto a 66 inch platform and landed on his feet, his vert would have been close to 66 inches.

Only if he didn't bend his knees in mid-air. I think your physics are off.

That is why I said "close to 66 inches". If he didn't bend his knees, it would have been at least 66 inches. Gilbert isn't doing a vert test so any guess as to his hops in the video is just that...a guess.

What height do you think his pool jump actually translates to? Ignore the water and just consider the edge of the pool is 38 inches high (conservative, probably closer to 40), he had to jump a good 2 feet forward to get to the edge and he landed on his feet...knees bent but not so much that he fell on his arse.
