I think this would get it done (for Cassel), as long as they are low twos and the offer comes early in free agency.

If a team like KC or Detroit is involved their round two pick is virtually like a 1st rounder. The Pats win because they get two extra day one picks and have get a bunch of cap room back to use on free agents / extensions.

Of course all of this assumes that Brady is healthy.

Matt Cassel is of much more value than Matt Schaub.

I'd agree with that, but there are enough factors in play here (loss of value if Brady is healthy, system QB label, super talented supporting cast, weak schedule, etc) that i would be ok with the Pats receiving the same value for Cassel as the Falcons did for Schaub.

maybe. but keep in mind teams know we are strapped salary cap wise. so, while they may be willing to trade for cassel, they may offer much less in return knowing we probably have to get rid of him somehow

I hope everyone posts a thread as to what their personal opinion of Matt Cassel's trade value is.

I had one in the works...so if everyone else would just hold their horses because I'm next to start my own thread on Cassel's trade value.

Up next is my trade Brady thread.. followed by my 'lets pick this guy up thread(s)'

Dont forget the Derek Anderson factor. I dont feel he is as good as Cassel, but ive seen reports that the Browns may try to trade or release him and give the starting QB job to Quinn. Some teams may look at Anderson and feel they could gethim for a third max, and that is better then giving up a two or one for Cassel.

I'd be fine with two two's. The only concern is will one of them be able to dance and sing like Cassel

I'm not as greedy as most of you. A first day pick in 2009 would

be better than a third round compensatory pick in 2010 that we

would have gotten for Cassel.

I could live with this. Cassel to Detroit for their 2nd rounder this year, and 2nd next year. Jumps to 1st if they make the playoffs. Hell, Miami did it. Just want to cover ourselves.
Maybe they swap their 2nd first too for our first. Like the Schaub trade. We move from 23 to 20. Both teams can point to the positives of the trade. Detroit gets their qb without giving up a 1st rounder. We can say their 2nd rounder this year is practically a first. We've had success drafting low in first. Doesn't bother us any.

This is the winner right here. 2nd this year and next, and a 3-slot swap in the 1st round, potentially giving us a better shot at Maualuga or whomever else may slide. Good call. For that deal, the fingers are officially crossed.

Remember when Mike Ditka traded ALL of his picks for Ricky Williams?

:D

if we don't get wowed, and two 2's is not wowed, is say we sign him to a legit contract and keep him.

Yah. Let's put ourselves in cap hell and lose all our good starters to FA just because we don't get a 1st round pick for Cassel.

You take what the market gives.

I doubt they go for multiple 2nd round picks, as they can only be signed for 4 years apiece. Just look at Matt Cassel and consider how valuable that 5th or 6th rookie-contract year is.

Yeah, I could see that too. They will take a long look at Stafford / Sanchez but in any other year these guys would be low 1st/high 2nd QB's. If they could get a couple of star OT's + Cassel, and get a few decent pick ups in FA, then with the WR corps they have, I actually think they could be a half decent team

To play Devil's advocate, how do you know the salary cap era isn't dead after 2009, as it is currently slated to be?

Seriously, I don't think the Patriots look at it that way; if that were the case, why did they sign Justin Rogers to a three-year deal (which, BTW, means he's an RFA next season if the Cowgirls don't extend him)?
