Saints release former Patriot WR David Patten

Are you saying you'd prefer Patten over Washington or that we should keep Washington but not refer to him as a WR?

Oh, definitely keep Washington. 100%. Just saying when it comes to creating a roster it seems (to me) he should be listed with Paxton, Gostkowski, and Hanson, instead of Moss, Welker, and Gaffney. He's not competing with other receivers for a spot. To put it another way, I don't think Washington's presence will stop a receiver from being brought in, whether it's Patten or a rook.

Got it and agree 100%.

Got it and agree 100%.
Washington and Aiken for that matter are ST players who can also fill in at WR....and that is a dual role...the last two years there has been no injuries at all at that position..per se..so their time has been on ST..with injuries I am sure they would be playing...I think the Pats like Aiken's height,,a good 3rd down target..Washington? I would think he would be used more in teh future..but AGAIN depending on injuries..If there is a young receiver..they may have him as a 4th..ot use him on ST...but both Washington and Aiken are ready and wiating.... Patten?? Minimum vet...maybe..to have in camp...nothing wrong with that...even a long shot..

Agree with that 200%.

His game against the Colts where he caught 2 TDs, ran for one, and threw for one is one of my favorite all time performances by a Patriot. Just plain awesome.

If Gaffney is looking to get paid, I wouldn't mind letting him walk and bringing in Patten for cheaper. I think Gaffney dropped more balls last season than I can remember Patten dropping his entire time in NE.

Thank You David, but no.

It's not 2001 anymore and there's no way this team finds room for him on the roster.

I'd rather keep another linebacker on the shelf.

Oh for crying out loud. :) As discussed by Tyler.Durden in another thread, Gaff had as many drops as Moss did this year, to the tune of 6 each. STATS Hosted Solution - Football - NFL - Leaders
Furthermore, while I loved Patten, he's not going to be able to hold a candle to Gaffney's run blocking and his blocking on the quick bubble screens.

Why is it every time some washed up Ex-Pat get's released from some team someone starts a thread and asks "so do you think we should bring him back?" You think BB takes special consideration when ex-pats get released? Who cares....like WR is a huge need!

Yesyes. Everyone's so quick to toss Gaff, an attitude which I don't understand. Yes he's had some drops but so has Moss and probably everyone else at one time or another. Our old friend David Patten did some awesome things while he was here but pink slipping Gaff in favor of DP seems a little over the top. I'd love to see DP here too,but not at the expense of who we've got now.

I love the guy for what he did and meant to the Pats a few years ago, but I can't see him being worth a roster spot. If he takes the place of another WR, that's a downgrade to ST. If the Pats keep those WR/ST and add Patten, then depth is lost at another position.

At this point in time Gaffney is a better option, in part due to his being a better blocker and versatility. In addition, it doesn't sound like he's looking for a huge payday, even though he's represented by Drew Rosenhaus; he didn't last year, and he didn't put up big numbers that would merit him a big contract elsewhere.

Gaffney isn't on a 'go' route - The Boston Globe

"No. 1 on my list is to get back here. I want to be here," he said. "When I wasn't here, this was the place I wanted to be, so now that I'm here, I'm not going to try to leave."

Moss brings a little bit more to the offense than Gaffney. Not hating on Gaffney, overall he doesn't do anything extraordinary but he's been solid. Just think it would be a cost effective move if Gaff is looking to get paid like a true starter. Patten has been doing pretty good in NO. Plus we have Kelley Washington and Sam Aiken waiting in the wings, I just think we are so deep at WR Gaffney is expendable but we'll see what kind of $$ he is looking for.

i don't have a view on whether the Pats should bring Patten back or at what price if they did. But I can still see in my mind's eye a couple of big catches he made in 2001/02, especially in the Snow Bowl. He's one of those guys who will always be a Patriot as far as I'm concerned.
