Beat writer Nicholas Cotsonika believes that the Lions are more likely to use the No. 1 overall pick on a quarterback than to trade for Matt Cassel.

"The Patriots would want something juicy in return, and we’re talking draft picks," Cotsonika writes. "When you’re building a team, you need picks." Despite a 56.9% college completion rate, Matt Stafford is the consensus No. 1 pick.

And that's why the Lions are averaging 4-12 this decade.

He may be correct in his conclusion, but his logic is idiotic. Does Stafford not cost the team a pick? Is he free?

The logic should really go something like this, assuming the Lions didn't trade the #1 overall pick (if they did that, the trade would result in a 1:1 move of quarterback for quarterback for the Lions):

.... I can get my quarterback with my second pick of the first round, but I need to toss in my second round pick as well... This means that I can get my franchise LT with the first pick of the draft and come out of the first day with my quarterback and my LT to go along with the running back and wide receiver I've already got on my roster.

OR

I can get my quarterback with the #1 overall pick, settle for whatever LT is left with my second pick in the first round and keep my second round pick. Now, which combination do I think is best for the longterm success of the franchise?

Once you break it down, you can see a legitimate reason to go in either direction, depending upon your opinion about the quarterbacks, but the "need picks" argument is just ridiculous. What are they going to do, draft another receiver?

Stupid Lions. They need to build their offensive and defensive lines. They can do that with the No. 1 pick, and get Cassel for the 20th pick and have some immediate success.

I think the Lions would be better served to keep their picks. Of course that's provided they actually make good selections for a change. lol

IMO Matt Cassel would be a better fit in Minnesota where they have established players on both sides of the ball.

Well, that's assuming that Cassel is the real deal. To me, that's really what it all comes down to. Is Cassel the proverbial "diamond in the rough" or did he just have a really good run as an unknown entity?

The Lions woudl be better off taking the best OT at #1, then trading their #20 + for Matt.

Having said that, I still have a strong feeling that the Vikes is where MAtt will land. He does have some say and he would be a far better fit with the Vikes.

Agree on all counts.

The Vikings are perfect for him. Solid line, all world RB, the play in a dome where Matt can use his scrambling and the elements won't effect his passing. They are a QB away from an NFC championship.

surprisingly i dont think the lions are that bad a situation for cassel. If they took a good blind side tackle with the one pick, they would have a decent O-line and Johnson on the outside. Then agian, they are the lions.

Good, based on the Money Involved in a No. 1 pick, I don't think we want it and I know Bill does not want to pay a rookie whatever the No. 1 $$'s are.

Obviously, we could trade it, but if I remember correctly Bill Parcells was trying like HELL to get rid of the No. 1 overall last year and had no takers.

WE DO NOT WANT THE LOINS #1 PICK.

How does ANYONE know whether Matt Cassel would be a better QB in Minny than Tavaris Jackson or even old Gus Frerotte?

Cassel is the biggest question mark of this offseason - Is Matt just a one year wonder and product of the system and the talent we had at WR? or is he the next top flight QB to come out from vitually nowhere

Cassel is as chancy as anything known to man right now

I think any team that goes after Matt will not give up anything more than a
2nd rounder and another later on or another 2nd or 3rd next season,I do not see a team forking over a 1st rounder this year, especially one that is relatively high - too risky for them IMO

If they traded for cassel they would give us the 20 pick from dallas, not the 1.

Logic fails the Lions though...

Toss ALL logic out the window.

ALL of it.

They make the Bengals look decent.

i watched stafford mature in georgia. i went 2 3-5 games a season and he was having a great game 90% of the time. so the lions will defintley pick stafford with the 1st pick. the lions are (if they have any offense) the best fit 4 stafford. they run around the same offense, except the bulldogs have a better offense

What offense do the Lions run exactly? The 3 and out?? :D

Cassel has been tutored by two great coaching staffs and certainly has a lot of mental experience. Unfortunately there is only one season to judge his physical play. Unlike any other 27 yr old QB though, there is only one season of wear and tear on his body. When I really think of this, it's remarkable that someone that has showed this great potential is likely one of the physically youngest QBs in the league. In 7 years he's only played one season.

If people think Cassel is the real deal, the Lions are better off giving up their 2nd and 3rd round picks (both will be the first pick in their respected rounds and not much worse than getting a 1st and 2nd rounder) than roll the dice on players who may not amount to anything.

Unless the Lions upgraded their scouting department, they are the same guys who made recommendations to Millen that allowed him to waste more high first round picks than probably any team in NFL history over a 4 year period. Why not give up a couple of high draft picks for the right for Cassel?

I'll happy to take the Lions' 2nd and 3rd round pick. Each are one pick away from the last pick in the previous round.
