Would Cassel have given Pats a better shot to win SB 42?

So I'm talking to a friend today about the Cassel situation and his argument is more of the same old same old about the "wisdom" of keeping Cassel as insurance against Brady not being 100% next fall. I then bring up SB 42 and Brady not being 100% for that game and ask him if, in hindsight, he thinks Cassel would have given us a better chance at victory that day than a hobbled Brady against the NY front seven.

To his credit he qualified his answer by admitting that the 2007 Matt Cassel would not have given us a better chance to win. Then he says, "But the Matt Cassel we saw at the end of this season would definitely have given the Pats a better shot to win."

My question to Pats fans (and especially to the "Pats should not trade Cassel crowd") is simply this; Do you agree?

I agree.

I also think the Patriots would have had a better chance with Curtis Martin at RB, or if Mike Haynes at CB. Also, having John Hannah available to fill in for the injured Neal would have done the offensive line wonders. I would have loved to have Jerrod Mayo spelling Bruschi and Seau inside too.

Different team, Cassdawg gave this team every chance to make it to SB 43 - the kid done good. The question now is team building for a run at SB 44, if the NFL chooses to devalue Cassel as a QB then NE signs him to a long term contract and goes the Montana/Young route.

Of course we could play the what if game all day with any players for the past, present, or future. That's not the point. My point in posting it was to see if my buddy's lofty opinion of Cassel's current ability and value is shared by the other "don't trade Cassel" fans I've been reading on this board.

His argument was that Cassel's mobility would have neutralized the Giants pass rush where Brady being hobbled played right into their strength.

That mobility didn't help him get the job done against the Steelers, where he was sacked 5 times, ran twice for 1 total yard and threw 2 picks. I think you can point that out to him, and that might make him think again.

2008 vs Steelers and SB 42 had one thing in common - Matt Light meets Burnination.

There was more to that SB loss than QB play, for sure. Defense and O-Line collectively sucked that day. Brady gave us a better chance.

2008 vs Steelers and SB 42 had one thing in common - Matt Light meets Burnination.

The Giants loss was on the guards and center, not the tackles. That's part of the reason that Cassel would have been useless. It's tough to run under the tackles and up the middle when Mankins is spending the day getting destroyed by everyone the Giants put up against him.

Correct. Neal going out and Mankins deciding to have the worst day of his life spelled doom. There was no time for anyone to run away from that rush.

I agree. I don't think it would help though. He just thinks that Brady/Cassel = Montana/Young and no amount of sense can talk him out of it. He sees the franchise tag as BB's admission of this opinion. I think he, and others who think this way, are seriously overestimating MC and will be greatly disappointed when he's traded for picks to the Chiefs or Vikings next month.

The positives (increased mobility, no game film on Cassel) would have been far outweighed by all the negatives (Brady's pre-snap adjustments, higher accuracy, being more used to game speed, etc.)

Interesting debate, but even in hindsight Brady gave the Pats the better opportunity to win that game.

Really stupid debate. There isint even one.

Cassel had a great year this year, but those first 3 weeks he looked very shaky and no where near the quarterback he ended up being week 17.

Brady even not at 100% was the leagues mvp, just had the best game for a qb ever completion % wise against Jacksonville.

Cassel would have done it!!!!"..the offseason has driven some of you absurdly metrochotic....correct me if I am missing something but didn't Tom Brady pass for the go ahead score with a little over 2 minutes left???...and didn't the defense start the next series down at the Giants 20??...if this is so, then how the hell do you blame the offense when it was clearly a meltdown with mitigating factors by the defense that lost this game...and one final note...did I see Tom Brady put the ball right into Moss's hands on a deep sideline with 30 seconds left that was mishandled??????...and Cassel makes THAT throw????

I would have laughed my buddy out of the room if he tried that on me, come on now man. Brady played the whole year in the most prolific offense in NFL history and was healthy enough to win that game.

There were two int's dropped on the last drive by Mariwether and Samuel and the biggest problem in that game was the O-line and the new coach in Denver. Cassel was a disaster last year remember BB putting Brady back into a blowout when Cassel threw the pick to Jason Taylor for a TD. Cassel was very shaky in preseason as well as his first 4 or 5 games this season. To say Cassel of SB 42 would not have made a difference?? I would say no, if anything he would have not been ready for the pass rush they received that day...no Patriots were.
