With the upcoming draft in April not being one of the deepest classes in recent years. My theory is that Belichick will trade Matt Cassel for a 1st Round Pick in the 2010 draft.

Why?

So he can have a chance at landing Tim Tebow. With Tebow, who Belichick could groom to be Brady's eventual replacement. But, Tebow could also play at the same time as Brady, and even at time they could takeout Brady and install their own verison of the Wildcat. Adding Tebow with give the Patriots the verastiltiy that they cherish. Tebow is just the type of player that Belichick wants. Smart. Hard-working. Knowledgeable. Flexability.

I know they drafted Kevin O'Connell early last season, but Tebow has the potential to change how the game is played. And lets not forget the the Belichick/Meyer connection. Brady has another solid 5-6 years in him and adding a Tebow could help lenghten his career as well.

Just a thought.

Hmm...so you're thinking BB's primary target would a pick at some unknowable point from #1-32 in 2010 on the chance that would land him one specific player who doesn't fit the typical Pats' profile at a skill position where they already seem well stocked, in a year when they're scheduled to lose much of their offensive and defensive lines?

I have to say, I can't agree.

p.s. if you're enamored of the wildcat, O'Connell runs a 4.61 40 and led his college team in rushing.

Don't get me all excited about my "wildkitty" offense again. :D

Teabow is an H back at best, he has no speed, and limited intelligence (you know he is sporting a mullet and jean shorts as we speak). NO WAY he is taken in the first round of next year's draft (you have to remember that Matt Millen is no longer making any picks).

The Wildcat is ******ed. It really is. And it hasn't worked well since the Miami game early in the season. I don't want any part of an offense that takes Brady off of the field.

I'm not saying that Tebow couldn't be an asset and switch things up, but not as the Pats' QB.

1. When has Tebow ever sported a mullet?

2. Considering Tebow was named an Academic All-American in 2007 and has a 3.70 GPA, I'm not sure where you get the bit about "limited intelligence".

3. Why is it that every college QB with mobility is suddenly unqualified to be an NFL QB? When did mobility become a bad thing?

hahaha.. I actually stopped reading after the 1st sentence..

Reports are this is deepest draft in years. No true blue chip players that distinguish themselves..

I'll bet there will be plenty of blue chippers. Last year's draft was supposedly very weak at the top, and ended up with lots of people making strong contributrions. The supposedly loaded 2006 first round, on the other hand, has produced a lot of busts and mediocre players with a few exceptions.

OK, let's turn this into a general question. Tebow's merits aside, do you think it would EVER make sense to trade aggressively toward the following year's first round in order to target one specific college player? My instinct is "absolutely not," that's the height of the classic no-no of falling too much in love with one prospect. But can anybody imagine a scenario in which this strategy could possibly make sense, given then unknowns of a future draft?

There is some precedent in the 2007 draft trade with #28, rolling that pick forward a year paid well.

I think "aggressively" might be too strong an approach, but I've been advocating rolling a Day One pick forward based on the projected Day One strength for potential 3-4 DL.

Another reason to roll a pick(s) forward has less to do with targeting a particular player and is more of an investment strategy: NE is almost sure to be restricted in the Free Agency market place by the uncapped year rules, having extra draft picks provides BB the greatest flexibility should he need them.

I agree, there are plenty of reasons to move value toward a day-1 pick next year -- one being simply that they already have a passel of them this year. But I can't imagine they ever do that with any group of particular players in mind.

There is nothing wrong with mobility, as well. But first things first. An NFL QB has to be able to pass the ball, first, last, and always. Tebow doesn't do that at more than an average collegiate level, and never will qualify at the NFL level. See Mike Vick, or Paul Hornung. :(

Of course, Peter King in one of his less lucid moments opined:
I think Jon Gruden is absolutely, positively right. "Tim Tebow is a Wildcat who can throw. This guy is 250 pounds of concrete cyanide. He throws well enough at any level to play quarterback,'' Gruden told the Orlando Sentinel the other day. Scouts in the NFL like to look at very unusual players like Tebow, who can play quarterback, running back, H-back and tight end, and say, He can't fit into our system. He'd be a fourth-round pick -- maybe. Big, big mistake. Tim Tebow is the kind of player you draft in the first or second round and find 20 plays a game he can fit in somewhere, minimum, or let him compete for a starting quarterback job. You watch. Next year, when Tebow comes out, a smart and flexible organization with a smart and flexible coach -- like New England or Baltimore -- won't let Tebow get out of the first round.

And this isn't the first time he's tried to suggest such a thing:
7. I think Florida quarterback Tim Tebow made the right decision to stay in school, only because so many college players leave early and later regret it. But I think it's nuts to hear the speculation that he might not have been picked until the third or fourth round had he entered the draft. That's where Mel Kiper put him the other day. I'm not blaming Mel; there's lots of that talk out there. But to suggest he's some sort of maladroit (there's your PKWOTW) and marginal prospect is demeaning and downright wrong. I will bet a lot of money that when Tebow comes out, he won't get past New England in the second round; as much as Bill Belichick is around Urban Meyer and that program, I bet he's become a huge Tebow fan as a football player -- quarterback, goal-line back, something.

First you're adverse to an individual, which I echo, now you're adverse to a group? I'm not talking 2-3 players, but a draft class that could have 6-10 or more 3-4 capable DL in the first three rounds. Richard Seymour is entering his 9th season, Jarvis Green his 8th, Ty Warren his 7th, they are all of them top players, but at some point NE must consider adding more talent to the depth behind them. Most potential 3-4 DL in this class are late round/UDFA kids who will probably require a lot of work to develop. With Denver and Green Bay joining the 3-4 pool...

I do not see any blue chippers in this draft. However I do see a ton of red chip prospects.

Next year's draft could have a good half dozen true blue chip prospects, but like last year, the red chip class will be small.

Of course, Peter King in one of his less lucid moments opined:

Peter King is so incredibly stupid and susceptible to swallowing the hype surrounding an athlete whole (not to mention all the other things I'm sure he swallows whole), that no one should take anything he says with even a grain of salt. Tebow is a marginal NFL QB prospect, because he hasn't shown great ability at the most important thing an NFL quarterback does, which is THROW THE BALL. This happens every year, and every year some stupid team wastes a high pick on a guy like this. Tavaris Jackson is a starter in the league because of this. I'll take the scrawny guy that can't move at all and weighs 190 pounds soaking wet if he's got a good arm and consistently delivers the ball to the target accurately after going through his progressions.

It is funny that people have these myths about Tebow. Fact is he is more accurate and throws less inteceptions than Stafford who could be the number 1 pick.
