One of new University of Toledo football coach Tim Beckman's assistants has resigned to take a position with the New England Patriots.

Beckman had hired Patrick Graham, who was previously a graduate assistant at Notre Dame, to coach the defensive line last month.

From his bio:

Graham came to Notre Dame after spending three seasons coaching at the University of Richmond. His last two years at Richmond, Graham was an assistant coach in charge of the tight ends and also directed the kickoff return unit on special teams. He was responsible for offensive film breakdown and game planning, specifically short-yardage and goal-line situations. Prior to being named tight ends coach, Graham was the Spiders' assistant defensive line coach in 2004 and worked primarily with the defensive ends. He also assisted with the video editing system and was responsible for defensive film breakdown.

His position hasn't been mentioned as yet, which is why I edited the thread title which read, "Pats add to coaching staff". Thought I was jumping the gun a bit with the "coaching" assumption, although it would seem like he's paid enough dues to be an assistant coach at some position.

Over the last 14 years, Brown has either played for or coached under some of the best defensive minds in football including Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, Romeo Crennel, Herm Edwards, Al Groh and Eric Mangini. Brown has spent the last three years coaching the defensive backs of the New York Jets under Edwards and then Mangini. Prior to his NFL coaching duties, Brown got his first full-time coaching job on Groh's staff as special teams coach at the University of Virginia from 2001-03. An eight-year NFL career preceded his move to the coaching profession as Brown was a safety and special teams stalwart for the New England Patriots (1993-96), N.Y. Jets (1997-98) and Detroit Lions (1999-2000). He was drafted in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft after a stellar four-year career at the University of Michigan that saw him win four Big Ten titles and play in three Rose Bowl games.

FWIW, I think too much is made of folks like BB & Mangini being economics majors. Schools like Wesleyan & Yale have no applied majors -- you can't major in "recreation science" or even business. Facing options like philosophy, molecular biology, intellectual history, etc. most of the football team always majors in economics, which is the code word for "pre-business."

That said, there's no question that Belichick assembles an NFL staff like no other. The alma maters look more like a law firm than a football team. Yale, Brown, Wesleyan, William & Mary...kids, if you want to be a Patriots coach, better start hitting the books!

Any job with the Patriots becomes a fast track. McDaniels went from obscurity to head coach in what... 3 years here as QB Coach/OC?

Good to see BB restocking the system with new coaches. The way the Patriots continually succeed, their staff will be poached by other teams pretty much every other year.

Hah sweet being from Toledo I thought this was pretty interesting hire at first until I read more, Toledo has sucked every year since Bruce graduated and went to the NFL but they did beat Michigan .

Everything here is true. Even at the Ivies, you can tell if you're in an easy class if you look at the back of the room and see 10-15 250-300# guys in a group.

That said, remember that the Ivies have no athletic scholarships, so any athlete who's there--unlike useless legacy idiots like W*--actually has to be a fairly intelligent person.

And, BTW, according to Notre Dame's website, Graham was a sociology major.

Too much is made until you recall that part of what attracted Kraft to Belichick were the long discussion together about managing the Salary Cap...

Which must be why Graham had recently accepted a position there as Defensive Line coach under Toledo's "new" Head Coach.

Fair enough. It's one of the major "default" majors, like English, psychology, biology, history, etc.

What majors are you imagining as rigorous if these are the defaults?

I do teach, and I recognize that some kids with no directions will willingly and gladly accept a C average in such a major, which is--as you say--possible in such a major. But I fail kids too and give them Ds when they don't show up and do the work. The kids getting Bs and As in these classes are working hard and learning critical skills. All four of those majors are serious majors.

Sorry to go off-topic here. But, I do look around the university and sometimes I wonder about journalism or say, advertising, public relations. I have the same attitude you do about some majors, but not the four you mentioned.
