this just dawned on me that if he played like crap last year we still wouldnt have made the playoffs we would have a better draft pick and he wouldnt be getting 14 mil. Now im as big of a pats fan as anyone but we didnt make the playoffs and if we hang onto him we have no money to even sign our draft pics and more thn likely will have to cut a couple valuable pieces. I def think we are going to trade him but then i again im not coach bill so i dont know. It just stinks not to know how this is going to pan out but he isnt worth taking up 14 mil of our cap whether he is the starter opening day or not. What does everyone else think? Its one thing if we made the playoffs and superbowl with cassel but we didnt!

Except any other year we SHOULD have made the playoffs. Not to mention him doing so well makes it very likely we're going to trade him for additional draft picks in the pick range we like better.

There is no downside to Cassel having as good a year as he did.

I agree other then if for some reason we dont trade him!

You answered your own question.
If he is not worth what we have to pay him AND we get something in return if we do AND you say it made us worth that he gets paid 14 mill, why would he be here at 14 mill?

You premise is if we make a bad decision was it bad that we get to make a decision.

We werent forced to tag him, we chose to. I agree if he stays here under the tag, tagging him was bad, which is the exact reason it wont happen.

20/20 glass is half empty hindsight is the WORST

you sound like briz, someone on this board, who was rooting for the pats to lose since week 2.
It doesnt hurt to have as many good players as you can. Think this way,if cassel sucked and god forbid brady isnt ready on opening day then who is your QB ? O'connell ?If anything its one less thing to worry about for the pats other than the financial hit which iam sure they will find a way to maneuver around somehow.I wont be surprised if they sign cassel to a 2 yr deal with some sorta bonus and then trade him later in the yr or next yr .

No chance it hurts. If Cassel had a bad season why would we want him back here anyways? He would have walked out here for nothing if he proved he couldn't fill in admirably in Brady's absense. I realized he would be gone soon as his contract runs out one way or the other, and this way is the better way. We have legit trade bait for multiple day 1 picks.

i just hope it is more of we are trading him rather then keeping him way to much money wasted when we have a team that can win now

And i would never root for our team to lose i had playoffs hopes right up to the last minute then reality set in

Once again I totally disagree, Andy.

Belichick gambled that he could have a merely adequate #2 QB and it cost him a Playoff and maybe Superbowl appearance. If at all possible, he won't do that again.

Unlike then, he can afford to have good depth at the QB spot for at least the 2009 season, until he is absolutely certain of Brady's health situation.

I beleive he is planning on doing so.

Do you really believe that he will trade Cassel; then have Brady turn out to be unhealthy. And then have ZERO QBs, when he has re-constructed not only a new SuperBowl contender, but a 6-1 odds-on favorite?

Not hardly likely, from Belichick's past behavior.

Time will tell; but I, unlike most here, feel MC is here until Bill is certain, and most probably until the post 2009 season. He won't rot, and will still be a valuable commodity then. Kevin O'Connel will have another year to show if he can be a creditable and valid #2 QB, which is an awful stretch to make today.

As for alternatives People suggested: JP Loserman ?!? Wrecks Grossman ?!? ...Blechhh!!!

I don't understand this. You seem to be implying that Cassel was a "merely adequate" fill-in for the injured Brady and cost us a playoff appearance, and at the same time argue that we need to keep him for 2009 as insurance against Brady not being ready. That doesn't make sense to me.

it wont be surprising ifthey signed cassel for a 2 yr deal especially since cassel at least as of now is not making noise that he wants to be the starter in NE. if he is okay being the backup for the next yr with a 2yr contract then the pats will most likely make an offer to him which could defer the salary cap hit and then trade him later in mid 2009 or 2010.

an 11-5 record "cost the Pats the playoffs!!!!!!"...uh...does anyone NOT see how ridiculous this statement is? Does anyone argue the FACT that an 11-5 record in the NFL is close to 98% sure, over the years of the modern NFL, to lock up a playoff spot? Would the "genius" who made this ridiculous assertion have rather had BRETT FAVRE playing QB for us last season? How would THAT have worked out?

Sometimes one has to SERIOUSLY doubt whether the people making these asinine posts are actually Patriot fans.

Make no mistake, though--he's said he believes he's shown he's good enough to be a starter in this league (and would you argue otherwise?).

What time did you start drinking today?

im just saying makes no sense why we want two qb's worth 14 mil when if we want to win now we need alot of other positions besides a backup qb for 14 mill. If he gets traded none of this matters.

At the start of the 2008 season Matt Cassel was merely adequate. At the end of the season, he was a franchise QB. They only needed one more win...;)
