My Dream Pats Offseason

I thought NE had a stud SS, drafted 24th overall if memory serves?

Stud SS? Definitely a stud, but not exactly an ideal SS, Good in coverage but not exactly a big hitter who can stuff the run yet. If there's another Rodney out there somewhere, I just hope he comes to the Pats.

CB may be priority #2. Anyone who is comfortable going into next year hanging our hopes on Wheatley, Wilhite, Hobbs and Richardson is being mighty optimistic. Our lack of depth and experience at CB is a little scary.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my offseason, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I'll try to respond to everyone's comments.

I'll start with Julius Peppers. I think the Panthers will franchise him and look at trade options, though they most likely will want to keep him. Since they don't have a first round pick, I could see a deal where we trade Cassel to say the Vikings or Lions for their first and move that pick to the Panthers for Peppers. I believe Peppers is a special player who has the athleticism to be something we have never even imagined in our system. Outside of his obvious pass rushing skills, he has the ability to drop back in coverage and speed to just bring havoc all day to the opposition.

Because of the addition of Peppers and the resigning of some of our own players, I didn't think we would have the cap room to add a veteran CB such as Jabari Greer.

It seems that the FS/CB tweener player always seems to slide a bit (ala Jimmy Williams) and I think Sean Smith could see a similiar tumble on draft day. This pick was also the reason I didn't give us a 5th rounder, because I think we would use it to trade up a few spots.

Percy Harvin is a player that I believe helps keep our offense special. He has the deep speed to stretch the field opposite of Moss and would be lethal catching screens. I also believe that he has the strength to line up in the backfield and take a few carries.

1. Peppers. Stay away from him. I'm not going to give up a possible 1st round pick in Cassel AND the cap space to sign Peppers when I can just pay the cash for a Suggs/Dansby instead. I trade Cassel for the 1st rounder and pick up a young impact player for the D.

2. Percy Harvins is a 1st round pick. I don't see the Pats spending a 1st round pick on a flex/Super H back player. And that's what he is. Reggie Bush 2, and the way the Saints use him, he's not a real running back. If Harvin were a 2nd rounder, I wouldn't be againt it but the 1st round is too early for this type of player. Besides the Pats offense doesn't NEED any more help to be special. They will be getting Brady back and they still have two of the best receivers in the league in Moss/Welker. A late 2nd or 3rd round pick on a rookie receiver or RB to keep the offense stocked for the future is possible though.

How much are you guessing that it take to sign Peppers?

Can Peppers play OLB without a hand on the ground? Moving Thomas back to ILB sounds very tempting to me.

For anyone who criticizes some of the "dream" offseasons that have been posted here as being unrealistic, here's a recent one from another board for comparison. I've highlighted a few of the laughs.

Trade Matt Cassel Chiefs for 3rd overall
Trade 4th to Chargers for LT
Trade 47th and 6th to Lions for 33

Resign

Pierre Woods
Jabar Gaffney
Rodney Harrison
Russ Hochstein
James Sanders
Mike Wright

Sign

Lorenzo Neal
Nnamdi Asomugha

Hunter Smith
Eric Green
Ray Lewis
Devery Henderson
Mark Tauscher

Restructures

Jarvis Green
Tom Brady
Richard Seymour

Cut

Kelly Washington

3rd Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech
23rd Aaron Maybin DE/LB Penn State
33th James Laurinaitis LB Ohio State
58th Fili Moala DE USC
89th William Moore S Missouri
97th Travis Beckum TE Wisconsin
160th Graham Harrell Texas Tech

208th Jon Cooper C Oklahoma
241th Jeremy Perry OG Oregon State

So maybe I've been too conservative with some of my offseason and mock fantasies. :D

If we can get/trade for a great CB to play with Hobbs, a better TE than Watson, draft an OLB and maybe sign an extra ILB, we'd have an amazing season. Those 4 positions need to be filled!
