With Cassel tagged - Is the front office on hold?

Unless we work a trade for Cassel can the front office make any moves?
Will their be $$$ for FA signings,maybe resigning Wilfork,ect. If we did keep both where does that leave us.
I'll admit I know nothing about the salary cap.

I don't think there will be any major re-signings like Wilfork.

The Patriots could re-sign some lesser players like Evans,

Paxton, and Gaffney by tweaking a few contracts.

This should be the next thing on the list after the Cassel situation we do imo. We need to keep him.

Wilfork has a year left and can be Franchised for another year unless the CBA rules change. I'd like to re-sign him too but this isn't the time to panic. We could even Franchise him a second time if necessary.

If Miguel's number's are even close to being right, he has the Pat's at $3.9M under the cap after franchising Cassell.
They wouldn't even have enough to sign the rookies this year. I believe last year's rookie pool was $4.3M.

So the short answer is, NO.

Correct. In my opinion, nothing speaks more loudly about their intention to trade Cassel than the fact that it was done on day 1, as opposed to their history of waiting until the end of the tagging period.

Agreed...actual contract signing may be "on hold," but assuming they're planning to trade Cassel they can lay all the groundwork for re-signings, etc. to finalize as soon as the cap space is cleared.

I wish we knew more about the Brady/Cassel situation and hope Brady is back 100% and we can trade Casse for some picks.

Yup... I agree. So early in the game. Got to mean that they want thins thing done in time to make other moves (re-signings & low-level free agents) before the draft.

Cassel will, IMO, be traded shortly after the trade window opens (end of February???)

This will be the NE's "Herschel Walker" deal. They will get back a 1, 2, 4 and a player...likely a CB, LB or a young OL.



*It will be funny to hear the Curran's and the Borges' say that the Pats did not get enough in a deal for Cassel.

Why would they want to do so? They have 5 picks in the first three rounds and probably 11 overall, even without a Cassel trade. .
Where are you going to put the inexpensive rookies? Try cutting eleven players from the Pats roster. Its pretty tough.

The FO can work out agreements now, then announce and sign the new contracts as soon as Cassel is traded.

start of the 2010 season, the Patriots face the loss of an unusually

large amount of players after 2009. Included among them are Mankins,

Kaczur, Neal, Wilfork, Seymour, Green, Hobbs, Gostowski, and Vrabel.

Rather than trade a lot of 2009 picks for 2010 choices, the Patriots

might keep most of their 2009 picks to develop for the 2010

People without a clue speak of letting Seymour go, but BB is not that stupid. Seymour comman+ds double teaming, nakes Wilfork and Warren more effective, and provides the pass rush from the defensive line position.

You don' let an under thirty year old future HOF player leave when there is absolutely no reason to do so.

If you were the Cards or Jest with only 35 or 39 players signed then you don't have CAP room. If you are the Pats with 50 players signed, that rookie pool merely offsets the current CAP figures. Under CAP accounting until the final cut the CAP does not consist of 80 players salaries, but only the top 51. Every rookie that you keep is a veterans salary that you have already, and cut and remove.

The CAP presumeably declines, as the rookie is mostly cheaper than the vet. So in this case, the rookie pool is not in ADDITION to the present CAP; it is INSTEAD of the current players salaries in the CAP. Only if the rookies CAP hit is bigger than the vet, does the cap room get consumed. But only by the difference in salaries. For example, the vet makes $1,000,000 per year and the rookie signs for $1,010,000 per year, the Cap room declines by the difference, or $10,000.

In short, no Problemo...

Re-signing Seymour will be no easy task. I think he will demand

to be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. I wouldn't be

surprised to see him stay away from traning camp this year until

enough money is added to his 2009 contract to bring him in line

with Dwight Freeney.
