Now the interesting part of the Matt Cassel saga begins. The Patriots, as we told you a month ago, would take this step, but now the drama is about to unfold. Clearly, the Patriots want more than the low third-round compensatory pick they would have received from the NFL. Who will be the major players in this sweepstakes? Here is an educated guess.

This is going to be very interesting to watch, but one thing all these teams must do is decide how Cassel compares with the draft class at quarterback. It is that evaluation that will allow teams to make the right decision.

The only possibility I don't agree w/at all in the Jets but they do need a QB, he says:

nate clements contract is prohibitive. if we could afford the $$ aspect of Cassel we would keep him. Clements is not an option.

Not to mention, he is wildly overpaid relative to his production. Good corner who isn't a ball-hawk by any stretch of the imagination yet is being paid 80 million over the life of his contract that he's only 2 years into.

I wonder if the hiring of Todd Haley by the Chiefs would mean that Cassel is a potential for them. Granted, it depends on how Haley evaluates Croyle and Thigpen, but it definitely makes things interesting.

I like getting Julius Peppers plus a draft pick (either 2nd or 3rd rounder.) The two teams would have to agree on compensation for both players ahead of time. If Peppers wants to play in a 3-4 system, then we should target him.

KC would be perfect but there are a number of reasons Pioli might not bit. Hee wants to start out fresh,a clean break from BB. Like Lombardy said they may think they have enough in Thigpen to carry them. So they may trade down load up on picks and rebuild the team. Isn't that why Pioli was hired?

Detroit, Minn, and SF all look like perfect candidates to trade with but.

Detroit is like the Jets they zig when they should zag they always make the wrong move. So i think they'll pick a top college QB which will immediatly turn into a bust.

SF like their first pick location 10 but again they have been trading first rd picks recently will they do it again? I think they're gun shy.

The biggest question I have with the Chiefs is how they would get a deal done if they decide to go for Cassel. They have picks 3 and 34. 3 seems too high, and 34 too low. Possibly 34 and a 2010 1st round pick (or 2nd conditional to a 1st, though that would seem a bit low). Trading down from 3 won't happen before the draft, and both teams would want to finalize things much sooner. 3 for Cassel and 23 would probably be too little, and I'm not sure the Pats would want to be picking that high, even though they would try to trade down (I'm not sure I see anyone trading up to #3, unless both Sanchez and Stafford look great at the combine, which would affect how willing teams are to jump at Cassel). 3 and 34 for Cassel and 23 would value Cassel around the 5th pick, which again seems a bit high. Possibly 3 and a 2010 2nd rounder for Cassel and 23, but again it seems a bit iffy. Obviously players could be thrown in, but personally I'm not nearly as wild on the idea of Tony Gonzalez or Larry Johnson as some.

I'd feel much better about the possibility if KC had a pick between 10 and 20.

Haley got to see Cassell first hand play well in bad weather which come into play in KC.....or at least the cold does. How about the USC kid going 4-0 in December I thought he would hate the cold....but loved his running game.

I am not sure about how much it would cost us to have Nate Clemons on the team??? or how bad his Cap hit would be to us, I do know he signed a massive contract a couple of years ago but not sure the details. Anybody??

I really do not see Croyle or Thigpen being the answer at QB as I have said before I watched Thigpen throw quite a few up which TG and Bowe came down with but not smart throws to make.

The article was great and never really thought about the Redskins being a player as their Cap situation is not good. You never know though if they cut Taylor that will free up some room and maybe we can pluck a good player off their team. Cassell would be great in the west coast system of Zorn's IMO so that could be an option.

I really like Detroit and their #20 this year and their second next year as they could draft a Franchise OT with the first overall and a good defensive player who slides in the top of the second round.

I see the Bucs, Panthers or Vikings as the teams that Cassel should go to. If I'm the Pats, I would not trade him to Lions. I understand that this is a business, but for what Cassel did to save the Patriots' season, I wouldn't screw him over like that. I would try everything in my power to trade him to a team that is a QB away from being a strong contender. I like the non exclusive franchise tag so Cassel is free to sign with anybody. So if he chooses the Lion's, then so be it.

I would like to see him go to San Fran, in exchange for the 10th overall pick (possibly a 3rd as well, or a conditional next year). Maybe I"m not being greedy enough, but we had some luck with the 10th pick this year. Win win for everyone, since Cassel is from CA as well.

Cassel has to agree to a long-term deal with his new team, so unless there's a team willing to cough up high-round picks on a one-year rental, they can't trade him anywhere he doesn't want to go.

It seems to me there's an error in his assessment of the Lions' decision process:

"They can part with their second first-round pick, 20th overall, and feel like they’ve gotten two blue chip players in the first round. It will cost more than the 20th pick overall, but for the Lions, they must think quality over quantity, and getting two quality players is much better than four good players, especially if one of the quality players is a quarterback. There is a deal here — but first things first. Someone in the Lions’ building must make the determination which player is better, Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez or Cassel."

Actually, that person has to make the determination which players are better, Stafford/Sanchez + the #20 pick, or Cassel + the #1 pick, since Stafford & Sanchez will be gone by #20. Cassel + a franchise LT at #1 looks mighty attractive to me.
