There is a debate in places like Detroit and Kansas City, for example, which have the first and third picks respectively at the 2009 draft, whether it would be better to trade for a proven QB like Cassel or take an unproven prospect in the draft. Other teams that might be interested in trading for Cassel include Minnesota, san Francisco, and Chicago.

I want San Fran #1 and Clements CB.

Can We get a pick and a player if so who do you want from each team???

Ok, Nate Clements isn't going to be traded because the cap hit that the 49ers would take.

And there is at least one thread on the main board talking about potential teams that Cassel could land at.

If the Pats were to trade Cassel for a player and a pick, I would rather them trade him to the Bears for their 1st and Tillman, but would settle for Vasher.

I'd be ecstatic if the Pats could get two first round picks. Realistically, I see a 1st and 2nd. I'd prefer a top 16 this year and a 2nd next year, but an early 2nd this year and a 1st next year would also be more than adequate.

How about San Fran #1 and Patrick Willis instead. :D:D:D

Re: Cassell's New Home???

Now we are talking!!

I think that would require incriminating photos of the 49ers owners. Incriminating of what, I don't know, but . . . :)

Re: Cassell's New Home???

Let's make the SF deal reasonable:

Pat Willis and swapping 10 for 23

Would take that deal in a nanosecond, but I doubt SF would consider it "reasonable". They think Willis is God. I doubt they would consider Cassel and #23 for Willis, which is why they are a perennial losing team. As Lombardi noted in his most recent blog, it was QB play that won them 5 superbowls, not an all-world ILB.

If Matt Cassel were the equal to Joe Montana or Steve Young, I would agree with you here...I mean, would you trade Jerrod Mayo for Sage Rosenfels...after all, quarterbacking wins Super Bowls....

I'm not in the least suggesting Cassel is a Montana/Young player, just that the 49ers don't seem to value the QB position that highly right now, which may be a mistake.

I think Cassel will be a quality starting QB, but if he turns out to be a Montana/Young type player then we'll be giving him up for cheap no matter how much we get.

Does DeBartolo Jr still own the Forty Niners?? I will check to see if I have some photo's :D:D:D

As long as Mike S. is the coach there Willis is going nowhere plus Spikes is like 40 isn't he??

I would love to see Willis and Mayo combo out there....but no other team would.

Naturally. And if he turns out to be AJ Feeley, we'll be accused of grand larceny.

There's no way a team should trade a periennial pro-bowl linebacker on his rookie deal for a QB who had a very good season on a team surrounded by great talent. At least I wouldn't. Draft picks, sure, but not a known stud for an unknown commodity.

Which is exactly why the talk of trading Tom Brady is just as ridiculous! We're talking about a guy who didn't start a single game in college. Now after one season he's suddenly worth a top ten draft pick AND arguably the best young stud at LB? The talk around here the last couple of days has been nuts. A mid 1st round & 2nd is about the most we could expect IMO.

I doubt many other teams are as enanmored with Cassel as most of our fanbase is. Maybe Pioli but I doubt it. Most of us tend to overstate his value because we saw his progression first-hand over the course of a season that seemed doomed as soon as Brady went down. It seems that getting us to 11-5 has already made Cassel into a Brady-like legend around here. A lot of it is because expectations were so low to begin with.

What he did this year is amazing but a this point I put him into the "servicable QB" category. It would be a bit of a coup to get a first for him imo.

Re: Cassell's New Home???

I would be shocked if SF were willing to give the Pats their first rounder this year -- not because Cassel isn't worth it, or even because they like Hill, but simply because the Pats took their top-10 pick last year and turned it into the DROY. Niners fans are still bitter about that. Now picture telling your fanbase that you're giving away your top pick to the Pats AGAIN, this time for their backup quarterback.

Re: Cassell's New Home???

I wonder if Tampa would be willing to part with some of its impressive OL depth.

Re: Cassell's New Home???

Player for player trades in the NFL are so rare. It's just so much easier for teams to equate value with draft picks.

Re: Cassell's New Home???

for the lions #20 and #33 picks......done

In what world do you see Sage Rosenfels winning a Superbowl?
I think Cassel is a better prospect than Rosenfels.

How about Cassel to Detroit for their 1st round (#20) and 2nd round (#33) pick?

Re: Cassell's New Home???

Patrick Willis? The kid who had more tackles than there were defensive snaps? People forget SF uses the Mike Nolan 3-4, more closely related to Pittsburgh's blitzing style. I've never thought Willis was best suited for NE's 3-4 and all his inflated numbers aside, I still don't see that he's a good fit to pair with Mayo.
