so hopefully well get two first round picks for cassel. The defence will really benifit.

Minnesotta & Chicago would be two teams that could use his services most. Minny especially. They have a team in place that could realistically win the NFC with a productive QB. Niether teams picks aren in the top 10, so it's not as if they'd be surrending some sort of franchise altering asset, as compensation. Detroit's #20 makes sense, but would Cassel want to go to Detroit, which I think will play into where he ends up. KC isn't really a match with respect to players, nor picks. They, as they shouldn't, won't offer the 3rd pick, and their #34 (?) in the 2nd round isn't exactly what I'd be hoping for from a Patriots perspective. Tampa is another team to consider.

I say:

#1 Minny
#2 Chicago
#3 Tampa
#4 Detroit
#5 KC

Those are the teams I think are most likely as a destination.

"We look forward to working with Matt again in 2009."

Why does he always throw in some wrinkle!

Because he's also a brilliant GM.

Dude, stop posting here. Your sig is killing me... :p

I think the most we can expect in a trade is a mid 1st round.

18) Chicago
19) Tampa Bay
20) Detroit
&
22) Minnesota

are all strong possibilities.

I think there are too many suitors. A smart/scared team will grab him for two firsts.

Well, that one was a no brainer since the hot topic with the media both locally and nationally was would the Pats play games with the franchise tag after Spygate and would the league come down hard on them if they did. As if other teams in recent years haven't blatantly tagged players just to trade them. Belichick is just covering his arse if he does in fact intend to trade him.

OT, but who is that in your sig, Real World? =o

Belichick could come straight out and say "we're trading him as soon as we know brady can play" and the NFL wouldn't have a problem with it. As of right now, until Brady steps on the field, there is a legitimate chance that Cassel could play, and as such, the NFLPA would have no case.

Interesting move, was listening to Perillo on WEEI this afternoon and he predicted it would happen later than sooner.. but we have come to expect the unexpected from the team of the decade. His reasoning was that the Pats wanted to explore every angle, maybe they have and their is an offer on the table that is agreeable to everyone.

Could well be. I'm getting so psyched about the draft:rocker::rocker:

if we do trade him, 2 first round draft picks would be amazing

no surprise there. Lets see what we can get for him! :D

If Cassel starts next week, Im done.

I want the Pats to lose every game and get a top 10 draft pick.

My how far we've come. We didn't lose every game and we'll still have mad picks (maybe even a top 3)...

There is NO WAY Patten makes this team!

Hell yeah lovin it, o yeah did anyone see this article One-year wonder or next great QB? - Bucky Brooks - SI.com

AWESOME article! You go Matt:D
"He looks like he has the tools to be a franchise-caliber quarterback," said a high-ranking AFC official. "He has the accuracy and athleticism to be a special player."

"When you watch how he progressed over the course of the season, you come away with the impression that he could be a special player," said an AFC personnel director.

Just curious, but do ANY of you think they applied the franchise tag and intend to KEEP Cassel? I can see the excitement about the potential trade offers that he could bring, but in light of Tom's injury, wouldn't it also be wise to keep a young, talented QB that the team has faith in, waiting in the wings just in case of a "worst case scenerio" with Brady? I hop Brady comes back strong and his level of play doesn't take a hit, but isn't anyone worried that that might not be the case? I'm sure you guys all have a lot more insight into all of this than I, but it makes SOME sense to me to hang onto the guy too.

Officially, he cannot negotiate until the next NFL calendar year which I think is March 1st, but teams tamper all the time. As for when they can make a trade, there is a date in late spring every year that is the cut off point for getting a long term deal down with a franchised player. I think that may be the realistic cut off point because I don't think any team can offer him a long term deal after that. As for teams wanting to just sign Cassel and pay the 2 first round picks if New England doesn't match the offer, that is a week before the draft.

While Cassel can't negotiate with other teams, the Patriots inform Cassel of their intent to trade him and ask him what teams he'd like to go to and what sort of contract he'd be looking for.

Then, the Patriots can approach those teams and inform them of what Cassel is looking for, in general, and then the Pats can either ask those teams what they'd offer in return for Cassel or the Pats can tell them what they expect in return.

There are ways around the other teams not being able to negotiate directly with Cassel.
