Matt Cassel has been given the non-exclusive franchise tag. (per espn's Michael Smith)

Let the bidding begin.............

Note that if we get two firsts, the bidding is with Cassel, not the patriots.

Note that absolutely no-one will be upset by that fact. :D

even if the tag is placed on Cassel as reported, Cassel is allowed to begin negotiations with other teams? if so, when can he start negotiating? and also if so, until when?

I'm utterly shocked! Never saw this one coming.

Now the betting has begun on which thread will begin sooner - "This must be a sign that Brady is farther behind than we though" or "We should trade Brady and keep Cassel". The odds are 5 to 1 that the thread will be Brady being behind and the over-under for the post count is 750. Bet early and often.

WOOHOO!!! Finally the confirmation of the best move. Now let's trade Matt for some 1st rounders :D

Haven't heard it, but this should come as a surprise to approximately 5% of this board. :)

How about a thread referring to the need to TAG asap as a smart business move... oh wait, we already got one... ;)

Unsurprising, other than the early timing.

Let the re-building begin.

It would be terrific to have two firsts, two seconds, and two thirds to rebuild this defense.
Enough ammunition to gain a pass-rushing OLB, a good safety, and a starting corner.

Has a reliable Network (not to knock Smitty) confirmed this report?

I'm just surprised that bspn is reporting the news first.
In a way I really want it to not be true - at least for a few days - just to see how they spin it.

Officially, he cannot negotiate until the next NFL calendar year which I think is March 1st, but teams tamper all the time. As for when they can make a trade, there is a date in late spring every year that is the cut off point for getting a long term deal down with a franchised player. I think that may be the realistic cut off point because I don't think any team can offer him a long term deal after that. As for teams wanting to just sign Cassel and pay the 2 first round picks if New England doesn't match the offer, that is a week before the draft.

Interesting move, was listening to Perillo on WEEI this afternoon and he predicted it would happen later than sooner.. but we have come to expect the unexpected from the team of the decade. His reasoning was that the Pats wanted to explore every angle, maybe they have and their is an offer on the table that is agreeable to everyone.

hehe - I wouldn't say rebuilding, I'd say we've got this wicked foundation and we're about to add some sweet, sweet stories to Patriots tower.

The New England Patriots announced today that they have utilized their 2009 franchise designation on quarterback Matt Cassel.

He becomes the first offensive player and just the fourth Patriot to be franchised by the team, joining Adam Vinatieri (2002 and 2005), Tebucky Jones (2003) and Asante Samuel (2007).

"Matt has been a pleasure to coach his entire career and last season in particular, when his years of hard work and commitment resulted in a most impressive performance," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick in a press release. "We look forward to working with Matt again in 2009."

Why does he always throw in some wrinkle!
