NFLdraftcountdown has a new 2 round mock out. The link is:

Draft Countdown - 2009 NFL Mock Draft

Not my favorite picks for the Pats:

1(23) James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio St. Could have had DJ Moore, Alphonso Smith, Sean Smith, Knowshown Moreno, Percy Harvin, Clint Sintim, or Eben Britton.
2(47) Jarius Byrd, CB, Oregon. Could have had LeSean McCoy, Darius Butler, Louis Delmas or Patrick Chung
2(58) Troy Kropog, OT, Tulane. Could have had Eric Wood or Connor Barwin.

Some interesting picks:

- Jesters taking Tyson Jackson at #17.
- Bears taking Larry English at #18. Seems way too high to me.
- Josh Freeman going #22 to Minnesota. Can't imagine why they wouldn't rather trade it for Cassel. Then again, they're stupid, so maybe I can imagine it. Freeman is nowhere near NFL-ready.
- Chris Wells lasting to #21 and going to Philadelphia (ahead of Brandon Pettigrew and Eben Britton, who they at least take at #28).
- Clay Matthews going #25 to the Tunaphins.
- Alphonso Smith going #26 to Baltimore. Great CB, but not the typical big CB that Baltimore tends to covet.
- Percy Harvin going #27 to Indy. Ouch. Wouldn't want to see what he could do in Indy's offense.

Yeah, I pretty much hate it. I'd rather have every single player listed from 24-32 than Baby Animal.

Saying "Tyrone Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite disappointing as rookies" to me means he has not done his homework on the Patriots. I'll take this mock with a grain of salt.

DryH,

Thank you. I needed this today. That is hilarious.

I think Miami will take Max Unger or Alex Mack with their 1st pick rather than reaching. It's a definite position of need for them. Satele can't handle Wilfork and Jenkins, he's too soft. We all know how BP feels about the importance of the C position from his days here.

It's too early for me to speculate on the Pats picks but I'm sure Byrd will not be one of the picks, he is strictly a cover 2 corner.

Thi mock does seem to understand what the patriots need in the first two rounds and the values available.

Belichick will have his choice of several "top" linebackers (or even 3-4 DE's) at 23. It is not clear that the value will be there when we pick in the second. The open question is how many of these front seven players Belichick's thinks is worth a first. This reminds of time when we traded up for Warren, the last of several DE's that Belichick had on his first round board.

Count me as one who would have Lauranitis on our first round board. His situation reminds me of that of Poslusny a couple of years ago. Laurinitis isn't flashly, but he does seem to project to be a starting LB in this league. As was the case with Meriweather (who we chose in place of Posluzny), it may take a year for Lauranitis to step up, but that should be expected for anyone we pick at 23 (which for some is an argument to move up).

Belichick seems likely to pick a defensive back in the second. The question is value and which defensive back Belichick thinks will fit in with our schemes..

And, this mock addresses the need at OT, given that Britt is likely to go, Kaczur is in his contract year, and O'Callaghan can't stay on the field. My preference is an upgrade at guard, but Unger and Mack may be the only ones that preclude waiting until the 3rd, 4th or even the 5th for a guard.
=========

I think that the players will move around a lot in the next two months. What is interesting to me is that the first does indeed seem to be the right value position for a DE or LB. My personal preference is Unger or Mack at 23 instead.

Tyrone Wheatley may have been disappointing as a rookie. What sport does he play? ;)

Yeah, I actually liked the direction Wilhite was headed and I suspect the Patriots will either conclude that Wheatley simply is too fragile to play CB or he will be back, healthy and play well. He certainly looked to have the tools and the brain. Just needs both wrists replaced with bionics. I suspect our group of corners will only look different by one player when the 53 is carved in stone.

DryH,

Glad I could make your morning, but I'm completely serious. I would literally draft every single player mocked from 24-32 @ 23 before I'd take Laurenaitis...who I would spend a second on if he happened to fall.

If Cushing goes before Maualuga I'll eat my sofa.

I'm fine with positions taken in this mock and would be happy with them. My nightmare though is Pettigrew is on the board at #23 and the Pats draft him. As long as that doesn't happen I'll be happy on draft day. :)

Once again I completely agree with you..

BTW No way Knowshon gets to pick 31, I would cry if he was at #23 and the Pats didn't take him, but I sure that he will be gone by then.

Kind of have to agree with him. Nothing special from those two guys. Wheatley a "C-" and Wilhite, a "C". At the end of the day we are all talking that the Pats need another CB either via FA or an upgrade on those two in the draft for 2009. How is he that wrong? "Metza-Metz" comes to mind.

How many here are happy to leave these two kids as our CBs of the future?....raise your hands..........Didn't think so.

I hope I am "Matt Cassel wrong" here, but I think not. I see JAGS in the James Sanders, Dexter Reid mold.

Please, I am wrong in my life way more than right. Can you let me in on what homework I can see about those two or would C and C- be about right?
Why are we searching for another CB?

I think Wilhite will stick as a backup/ST guy though.

I agree with Pettigrew. I wasn't impressed. If you wait until round four Cook from South Carolina might be a better deal. But of all the TEs, Casey is the TE they should draft. 112 catches last year and 13 TDs, but there's more!!!....Operators are standing by! He ran the ball 46 times out of a "wildcat" type formation at Rice with 6 TDs and a 4.2 yard average! He is about 6'4" 240 with 4.6 speed and terrific hands. He is a little more mature at 24 yrs old as he was in the White Sox system. He also played some S and DE. Isn't he the versatile kid that BB would like? We can put Ben "metal mitts" Watson in as the blocking TE. He has improved there I would admit.
I see Casey as a Cooley or Dallas Clark type TE who might spread out or drop into the slot. Those two guys aren't so bad!
You do not have to tip your hand for the spread formation as Casey could stay in as the number 5 receiver.

I was getting impressed with their play, and I think everyone know how much I hated last years draft...

I thought that Whilite made great strides during the year, and looks like he will be a solid DB. Wheatley made some nice plays before getting hurt. I think that we all need to harken back to last year at this time, when everyone was universally killing Merriwather. The Pats system is not easy to digest, and you can not play defense at top speed if you are not sure of what you are supposed to be doing. Let's at least give them both another season before we JAG them.

That's my POV.

Knowshon is going to be an absolute stud RB in the NFL, he was used very little in the passing game in Georgia, but he has tremendous hands, picks up blitzs very well, and refuses to go down.

Granted RB is not an area of need for the Pats, but if he dropped to #23, they woudl be nuts not to take him.

I can't see it happening. We have too many needs and even if he drops to #23, he won't be the BPA and it's our D that needs infusion.

I pretty much agree with you. I'm not particularly anti-Laurinaitis - I think he will be a solid player at ILB, and that Belichick could find a way to use him, but I just don't see him as nearly the value that we could get at #23. I'd be happy with him at #47, but see no way that he falls that far - I think Detroit or St. Louis will snap him up in the 2nd round if he falls out of the first.

Acquiuring players is a crapshoot. For me, if Lauranitis is very likely to be a solid starting ILB in this league, then he is worth the #23 pick.
