So lost in the drama (must be a Pats forum) is that tomorrow is the first day the franchise tag can be applied. To me the smart move by the Pats would be a very decisive action at the moment it can be done. This will tell every other team in the league without question the Patriots have clear intentions about not letting Matt walk away and will begin the bargaining.

I think delaying it would be ok, but an immediate action would send a clear signal to the NFL and also kick down the door to speculation castle.

Anyone else think it happens tomorrow?

When is the first day they could trade him or that another team could sign him as a Franchised player ? (not that I expect an outright signing but you never know).

If they Franchised him tomorrow is he immediately tradable or is there another date for that ?

Good question. I wonder if they have to wait until free agency (Feb 27) begins?

He will definitely be franchised tomorrow. No questions asked. I would be absolutely shocked if he wasn't and the Pats let him walk away for nothing. they'll franchise him, monitor Brady, then dangle him as trade bait. Hopefully that all takes place prior to the draft.

Hmmm yeah if they have to wait until the 27th to trade its really hard to say.. I had completely forgot about it being the first day teams can franchise player good call tho.

Well, not franchising him tomorrow isn't effectively letting him walk away. I think they have a couple of weeks to decide before he's official a free agent. But I really think it will be tomorrow as a show of decisive action.

I can't see the Patriots not getting him wrapped up right away. If they don't, there is a HUGE chance that teams will begin talks with him right away with deals that would be put in place to draw him away from the franchise tag.

Re: Will Cassel be franchised tomorrow?

aprox one hour until this happens:D

Re: Will Cassel be franchised tomorrow?

By tomorrow do you mean work time or... can the Pats do this 67 minutes from now?

Re: Will Cassel be franchised tomorrow?

I hope and think the Pats will put the tag on Cassel sooner rather than later - hopefully tomorrow - in order to make it clear to everyone that he isn't going anywhere without dealing with them first (unless someone wants to pony up 2 first round picks). I'm not sure when they are allowed to formally trade him, but there's nothing to prevent discussions from starting. I'd like to see him traded within the first week or so of FA so that the Pats know where they stand on the cap and can make some moves. I'm sure that the teams with QB issues would like to get that resolved early too, so it's to both parties interests.

I see Brady getting "sicker" in the next 3 weeks, with numerous doubts as to the timeframe of his recovery. :D

Re: Will Cassel be franchised tomorrow?

No trade before Feb 27 permitted.

Well, it's 12:03 and nothing. Guess they're not franchising him.

G'night all!

;)

Even if he is franchised now, we won't know about it until tomorrow morning anyways.

are we there yet?

Today is not the first day of free agency, there's no need to franchise him - yet.

But they will franchise him tomorrow so that he can begin talks with teams to see what kind of contract he wants and who is interested in paying that to him. Better to get that ball rolling sooner rather than later.

The minute the Pats franchise Matt, that $14.6M cap room disappears, so my guess is that they will wait at least a week to 10 days before they do anything. They can talk with teams and lay the groundwork for a deal, talk to the agent and let him know what they plan to do. They might even give the agent a heads up and let him negotiate a new contract with the trading partner. Nothing can be done until Feb 27, so keeping that money off of the books makes all the sense in the world for the Pats.

Yeah I see no need to do it first thing on the first day, really is no benefit. I would think within a week.

No harm in that, if we go from, say, $20M to $5M available it doesn't make any difference. We can't use the difference to sign anyone (of our own players) because when we do eventually Franchise Cassel we won't have the money available then.
