Just saw on PFT he's getting the boot in Detroit. I don't assume Detroit sheds players just because they suck. In fact that might be why they sign players...

Sounds like a cap/culture casualty, and I make no assumptions he's even any good. I just wonder if he's the "stick him in the back and let 'im go" type CB material Bill likes.

Plus it's almost time for the flood of "so and so was cut, lets sign him!" threads, so maybe I can be an unofficial kick-off for that? Not exactly the purpose of this thread, but you know the time approaches...

No more JAG cornerbacks from Detroit or Cincy please. :D

Bodden was decent for Romeo a couple of years ago.

I would not be surprised at all (please don't sign him), but then again he could mearly just be cut in the end anyway just have to wait and see. I did read this earlier on rotoworld (I think has the best and fastest news regarding players) wasn't sure about starting a topic on it tho.

Rotoworld Player News
"Yet another one of Matt Millen's regrettable moves, Bodden was an average corner when put in Detroit's zone defense and took too long to unseat Travis Fisher as a starter. Bodden's contract was formatted poorly, as he was due an $8.6M roster bonus in the second year. The Lions are left with only the third-round pick they acquired from last offseason's Shaun Rogers trade."

Per PFT, "It’ll be interesting to see where Bodden lands. We’ve got a feeling that more than a few people in Cleveland would love to see Leigh wearing an orange helmet again."

Yeah definitely could see that happening.

I saw this earlier today but agree we do not need any more retread corners from bad defensive teams. He looked alright his last year in Cleveland before he went to the Lions but he is a big corner with 53 starts in the league so you never know.

Ronald Bartell from the rams is a big corner as well who is the other DB that I like from the Rams (Otogwe).

Joselio Hanson from the Eagles was on the field over Leto Sheppard near the end of the year is another corner in FA I think could improve our defense.

Bodden was pretty good in Cleveland- wouldn't mind seeing him land here. Worst case scenario, we cut him.

Makes Shaun Rogers for Bodden-and-a-third look even more stupid from Detroit's end, though.

Bring him in to push the sophomores in TC/preseason

Bodden was an up and coming CB for Cleveburgh, I hadn't realized they traded him. If he's not brain-burned after those two dysfunctional organizations he's worth bringing in for a visit. If he's willing to take a prove-it, one year career rejuvenation contract with a championship caliber team...I'm interested.

Didn't you learn your lesson when the Lions cut Fernando Bryant? This should be a huge red flag if a guy can't even stay on the worst team in football. I hope the Pats pass. In fact, the highlights I did see of teams beating the Lions was WR's burning Bodden repeatedly.

I'd take him for around a million and a half.

Oh, and Atogwe, Yes... Bartell, NO.

The Patriots should do this year what they did last year: draft 2 mid round CBs. In 2010, they will have 4 CBs on rookie contracts - at least 2 of them will turn out to be decent and at least 1 of them will be good enough for dime/backup packages - all you really need in the BB scheme -and all 4 will be affordable on rookie contract money.

Basically, this comment relates to this thread because I'd rather see fresh, young, injury free, athletic, and coachable studs back there than Bengal and Lion CB fodder.

Why do you make the assumption that Bodden is being cut for his play and NOT because of the 8.6 Million dollar Roster Bonus he is due? That is a much more likely reason to cut someone.

Did you stop to think that Lions defense was, fundamentally, unsound to begin with? Or how about how long it was taking those WRs to actually "burn" Bodden?

I think a bigger reason to not look at Bodden would be his off-field issues.

Bodden did have 6 INTs abd 76 tackles in 2007. Unlike Bryant, O'Neil, etc. he is a younger player who up until last year was a promising players. He was on an upswing where most of the guys the Pats sign are on a down swing. He will probably have to accept an one year show-me deal this season.

I would say it is worth taking a flyer on the guy if Belichick thinks last year was an aboration. Could be a diamond in the rough pick up or just a waste of a roster spot. Either way, he would be a low risk signing.

It's neat to hear you guys talk about him this way. Different from the usual reaction to cut guys.

Looking at the cap hit he was cut to save, do you think he'd sign a low $$ deal? I wonder if a team that realizes their desperate at corner will swoop in and over-pay him (hehe).

I could see a low money, high-incentives type deal if he really does show promise aside of last season. Might be wiser than dropping $10M on Osomugha. He might be good, but would he be $9M/year worth of better compared to someone like Bodden? I'd rather invest the money in safeties, myself.

Let me start off by saying I've never seen him play..

BUT bringing in Bodden definitely has to be looked at. Romeo runs the same defense we do. As someone pointed out the year before going to Detriot he had 6 ints and 76 tackles. He's listed 6-1 193.

I wouldn't hold it against him for having a down year in Detriot. A lot of players with talent don't play up to their level in Detriot

What concerns me is up until 2006, he never played a full season. Was this because he wasn't a starter or had injury issues.. Maybe someone with better knowledge can chime in.

Anything serious?

I just think because his cap hit was so high was the reason for leaving. Teams know this so on the FA market I bet he still would get a pretty contract. That is why I think he would not sign a incentive contract as some stupid team will throw money at this kid because of his age and body of work.

I threw the name of Ronald Bartell out because he would come come cheaper and he was one of the two bright spots on the Rams defense last year IMO. He is good playing the run and is big (6'1 209 @ 26y/o) he had 57 tackles (54 solo's) with three picks and 22 PDef which was 11 in the league.

great people want another retread out of det like bryant

He did have a bad year last year. Granted so did everyone on the Lions' defense (they had 4 total INTs for the year). The guy has upside, but he he will be 28 when the season starts next season and only three seasons as a starter (one decent, one very good, and one miserable). I think a lot of people think he is a JAG and won't throw a lot of money.

He might sign a two or three year deal. But if he thinks he is as good as he was in 2007, he would be better off taking an one year deal with a team where he can display his stuff and then hit the free agent market with a revived career and potentially no salary cap. He might be willing to sign a deal like Stallworth or Kelley Washington did when they first came here which was basically one year deals with an option.
