The National Football Post | Notes From Lombardi: Top Free Agent QBs

FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:

With the first day of free agency right around the corner, today’s Tavern features a breakdown of the top quarterbacks in this year’s free agent class.

TOP QUARTERBACKS IN FREE AGENCY…

NAME, TEAM, AGE, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, SPEED, YEAR ENTERED NFL, DRAFT POS., AGENT

1. Matt Cassel, New England, 26; 6-4, 222 pounds; 5.05; 2005; 7th round (230th overall); David Dunn — Will be the top prize of any team seeking a young, up-and-coming quarterback. Will restore the credibility of a franchise. Any team signing him might have to consider trading down out of the top five. It will be very expensive to sign Cassel and may also cost a high draft choice. Once the tag comes on him, all bets are off. His value is a first round pick above 15 along with a second rounder.

If the Pats got a top-15 pick for Cassel in this draft I would be psyched. Flabbergasted, but psyched.

Value increases when something is rare, not important. Matt is a both. A strong potential franchise QB in a market barren of strong potential franchise QB's. I think flabbergasted is an accurate description of what we will be feeling when it goes down and I don't think any of us fully comprehend the tripping over one another teams will be doing to get MFC.

If we get a top 15 pick for Matt Cassel I am going to attempt an honest to goodness backflip from my couch.

Do you own a camcorder and have a youtube account a loved one could post the video on for us? :D

If the Patriots can get as much in a trade as Lombardi suggests,

the Patriots will franchise and trade Cassel even if Brady is not ready

for the start of the season.

If Allen got a first and Third from the Vikings then Cassell Is worth at least that I see a lot of people saying a 2nd this and next IMO that is to Low:ugh::ugh:

I'm still rockin the chance of two 1st rounders

It can be called the "F*** Roger Goodell" pick.

I think they got two third rounders for Allan with the first of course.

Were a long way from what we thought of Cassel in August. This is a real opportumity to strengthen this team for another 4 year run at the SB.

aint it funny how some things work out?

now image next year brady comes back fine, does amazing, wins MVP, we win SB, and we also get either a 1st and 2nd for cassel or 2 firsts to play with? giving us TWO 1st rounders this year, and TWO first rounders next year?

ppl were so happy when brady went down and when we lost our 1st rd draft pick....they wont be able to handle it

HELL YEAH I can't wait for people to eat their words and start crying, I love it!

In some ways it just makes you want to tear up from joy :cry2: and it also makes you want to laugh at those people

:):):):):) What a wonderful line. Wish I had posted it first.

Imagine what we could have done last year with #31. Gotten Kenny Phillips to pair with Meriweather at S. Traded #31 and #63 and #94 (1000 points) to move up to #16 (1000 points) and take DRC along with Mayo.

Now imagine the look on the b*st*rd's face if we got a top 15 pick this year to go with 5 other picks in the top 100. :)

Michale Phelps banging on a bong is even more reason a team should want Cassel. He's bright, mature and extremely squeaky clean. Even the most talented rookies are risks based on their age. Matt Ryans don't come out every year. Cassel may not become the best player on his new team but he easily could become the face and leader of that team.

Dumb question: when he says "His value is a first round pick above 15 along with a second rounder", does that mean 1-14 or 16-32?

I'll take 1 of each please. :D

I was thinking a first and a second, but Lombardi thinks this could be a 1-15 pick in the first round. I wasn't exactly thinking that high but I will be glad to take Lombardi's word for it. I respect him more than most of the journalists' whose articles we post. Hopefully his predicition comes right. This is a great draft to stock up with picks, especially considering the needs we have on defense.
