Tony Gonzalez and Matt Cassel

No offense, but that is ridiculous. QBs receive premiums, so to think that Cassel + #23 = #3 is crazy. Why would BB do this? He would lose 2 potential and likely starters in order to pay a rookie $50 mill. I see the Pats getting a mid 1st (15-24), using their own 1st, and probably accepting a 2010 2nd or 3rd...because the Pats have a bounty of higher picks this year. The money they don't spend on your #3 will get used to extend a couple of Patriot players like Wilfork, Seymour, Mankins, etc.

There's a reason the #3 pick gets slotted so much $. The value of a #3 pick is equal to the 8th overall + the #23rd pick if you go by the draft value chart. So that's essentially the value I'm placing on Matt Cassel here. There's always the possibility of trading that #3 back to say the Jags/Raiders at #7/#8 respectively if those teams value a guy like Crabtree.

In Bill we trust,We need to pressure the QB and get younger and faster on defense,I cant count how many mis tackles last season. My X-mas list included a pass rusher and a shutdown corner..

if we dont get an outside pass rusher ill be very surprised. a shutdown corner, an OL, or S would be fine too

Correct me if I'm wrong...with Brady returning, and Maroney (lol), the Pats will field 10 out of 11 starters from the 2007 offense....one of the highest scoring teams in history. And just by watching the playoffs this past month, defense rules. So this man love for Gonzales is borderline insane. The Pats have issues at ILB, OLB, S, and CB. But hey, lets swap out QBs for aging TEs....makes so much sense :)

Only borderline? (fixed your post).

EDIT: Gonzalez isn't worth a 3rd round pick to NE, he tops out, at best, as a 4th. Let's assume he comes to NE in a Cassel swap, we all know NE is winning the next Super Bowl :woot:, does Gonzo get his ring and retire? Is he still hungry to play football or is he only looking for a ring to put him on the first ballot ticket for the HOF? It's already been pointed out that NE doesn't really need him as a receiver, though he might fill some of Gaffney's role. I'd rather use that 4th on BC's Ryan Purvis - great hands and he will block. I second the disgust for Gonzo dictating to Pioli, enjoy Green Bay.

The Pats can surely get more for Matt than Gonzo and a second rounder. On that deal: major steal for KC. Pats aren't that stupid.

Shutdown Corner? That like saying I want a HOF QB in the draft.

I think that term gets thrown around a lot, but a Shutdown corner, in my opinion, does not even exist in the current NFL, let alone the draft class.........yet anyway.

Ok, then ill rephrase: I hope we draft a crappy corner who cant guard anyone. maybe thatll please you. gimme a break. terms such as HOF QB are used, ballhawking Safety, home run hitting RB, run stuffing LB, pass rushing DE. shutdown corner is another one of these phrases

The money slotted for top ten draftees has made the front of the chart obsolete, with possible exception of a Manning like QB going early.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall of the quarterback starved teams, because the conversations about Cassel are probably going to be worth the price of admission.

Nonsense. Flies don't pay admission. ;)

Chiefs fans are willing to ship out LJ for nothing, but are only willing to get Cassel by swapping #1's, based on their message boards

Tony G has game and has been the most productive TE the last two seasons with marginal QB play. That being said BOR has pointed out that he could retire after we win Super Bowl 44 and 45:D:D. While at first TG, Welker and Moss would be some nice targets for Brady coming of major injury.

I love this kid Brandon Pettigrew and with Watson and Thomas FA after 2009 I think we need to go younger at the TE position. Bottom line for me is #3 and TG is not what BB would like and #35 +TG is simply not enough.

I think with the extra pick in the first when we trade Cassel to a NFC team 18th - 20th pick in the draft plus another 2nd in next years draft. If Jared Allan was worth 17th overall and two third rounders then a franchise QB is worth at least a mid first and a second (Both 26 y/o). So I guess I believe we will be dancing with Chicago, Tampa or Detroit when we are looking for trade partners for Cassel.

I think we can get Brandon Pettigrew with our #23 pick (A lot of Mock's have him going to Atlanta at #24)and I believe he would be our only offensive player picked on day one unless and OL or WR fell. That would leave us with a pick between 18-20 where we could grab a top defensive player.

We are going to resign watson as he is worth more to us then anyone. With moss and wes we rarely send our TE to receive and hold them to block.

put tony to block 90% of the play is a sure way to get him and qb injured as he has never did that in this career.

Ok then what's your value for going from 23 to 3? Cuz I can't imagine it's anything less than a mid 1st rounder? Is that not good enuff compensation for Matt Cassel?

If the Pats trade Cassel, it needs to bring back defensive help and not another pass catcher to the best passing offense in the sport over the last 2 years.

Gonzalez is a great TE but when your offense has thrown for 8300 yds and 71 TDs over the past 2 years you might want to look to upgrade elsewhere.

On the other hand, assuming arguendo only, getting Gonzalez would mean that the team wouldn't have to use a pick on a tight end, and that would be one more pick that could be dedicated elsewhere.

Besides, I want a dominant blocking TE. We have too many skill players for catches already, it's not a need

No we don't have too many. We have three outstanding ones and a bunch of JAGs, and one of the three doesn't get on the field on downs where we want a conventional rushing attack. That's great if all three stay healthy, but not so much otherwise ...

I think giving fair trade value for Gonzalez is an appealing move.

Problem -- we already have Watson and Thomas, so it's not so appealing unless we move one of them.

Well, if we trade Cassell AND a young TE for Gonzalez plus picks, I sure hope we'd get more than a high 2nd rounder in the pick area. But extend that deal with a high pick next year, and things get more interesting. We'd have upgraded at TE, added a pick this year, and added a pick next year, all in return for Cassell.
