Here's why. IMHO of course.

The recent positive media stories on Cassel's play last year (Pro Football Weekly ranking him 32nd best player, not QB, in the NFL) and his offseason value (TSN ranking Cassel as 3rd best FA player, not QB, in the NFL this offseason) seem to be suggesting (confirming?) that Cassel is a franchise caliber QB, one of obvious high demand, this offseason.

So, allow me to work with this axiom.

Given the abundance of teams desperate to find even a decent starting QB, and coupled with a dearth of quality QB's being available, I believe we will see at least one team (likely more) jump at the opportunity to acquire Cassel this offseason via the "two firsts compensation for franchise tagged players" rule afforded them by the CBA.

For a team staring at hiring a re-tread FA like Garcia or Favre or ? and who are drafting outside the top 10, and without any hope to land either Stafford or Sanchez, I would think that they will be ecstatic to be in position to land Cassel, who I would imagine the vast majority, if not all, teams would have ranked as higher value, and certainly far less of a risk, than either Stafford or Sanchez ..... for the mere cost of a couple of mid to late round 1st's.

The key here is that the team needs to pounce on Cassel PRIOR to him signing his tag tender BEFORE he becomes a contracted player to and thus, under control of, the Pats. Cassel's agent would almost certainly advise his client to refrain from signing the tender until after such time as they have explored a market with the least amount of restrictions possible. Keeping the Pats out of it ensures as open a market as possible for his client so that he can attempt to secure the best deal possible for his client. Assuming suitable interest, Cassel's agent comes up with a contract that they want and they bring that offer back to the Pats in order to match. At this point the Pats either match (highly unlikely) or take the picks as per the CBA allotment.

Failing this action I believe Cassel's agent would then instruct his client to sign the franchise tender, take the money, and then worry about finding a suitable dancing partner afterwards.

Thought's or criticism's?

What are the tampering rules?

So, you're saying that we need to pass the stimulus package right away, before this weekend is up?

So, we should expect the Jets to come out of nowhere and seduce him like they tried to seduce Branch and Troy Brown?

I don't think the Jets can afford to hire even a new ballboy. But the Bucs, the Texans, the Vikes, the Titans, the Lions (Dallas' pick), maybe the Bears, the Eagles ........

yah the first thing that crossed my mind is the jets doing this. i dont know how this situation will unfold, or how according to league rules it can work out. but i think we will do our best to trade cassel to a team outside of the AFC, more particularly the AFC east. that is of course if we trade him. however, your post, in suggesting that we may not have to opportunity to do this is interesting.

Just to be clear, in that scenario, the Pats do little work and get 2 1st rounders, correct?

Jets are way over CAP.

My 1st thought as well. I'll take it.

If the Jets want to give us two firsts for Cassel, that works fine for me.

Indeed, the hard work has already been done. :eat3:

I'm not sure I follow this logic. How does restricting your universe to teams willing to give up 2 #1 picks make for a MORE open market than than the universe of teams willing to negotiate for a lesser package of picks? The only way is if the Pats don't want to negotiate with the teams in question, i.e. they're division rivals. And only one team in the division is (probably) in the market for a starting QB.

So is the idea is simply that you think the New York Jets are going to give up 2 #1 picks for the Patriots' backup quarterback? Because I can't picture that ownership having the guts to take on the PR firestorm that would result.

The biggest restriction (to Cassel's agent) is relinquishing control of the situation over to the Pats. They do this the second they sign the tender and contract him to the Pats.

The option to have his client sign the tender, and work under control of the Pats, is an option that is still available to them if not signing the tender doesn't work out.

No I don't think the Jets can afford to hire even a new ballboy nevermind shell out tons of coin for Cassel.

The only teams I could see doing this are Minny and Tampa. Both teams are in need of a QB, both have a good amout of cap space for 2010 (TB a ton), and both are contenders in their division for the playoffs in 2010 and a good QB could put them over the top and keep their 2010 compensation 1st rounder in the 20's as well.

The Jets have no money to deal with. The Panthers are below the cap, but not by much and have two huge UFA in Gross and Peppers. Although, I read somewhere that cutting Delhomne would save them 6 million in cap space. But I think it would be to tight for them. And the Lions, KC and SF all have draft picks to high in rnd 1 and are unlikely to improve a great deal next season. Resulting in their 2010 pick being in the top 10. I cant see a team giving up 2 top 10 picks for Cassel.

Minny has a the best RB in the NFL, a good defense and a good Oline. And with the teams in the NFC north, they should be on top of that division for a while. if they get Cassel and a WR (Houshmandzadeh) they could be a serious contender in the NFC and the NFL. An aging FA QB leaves to many questions in a couple of seasons and a rookie may need a couple of years to develop. Cassel can come in a lead the team right away. Why not give up a #22 and another #20-something pick?

Quick question.......

With the possible exception of the Jets, would anyone care what team Cassel signed with if it brought back 2 first round picks?

I'd add:

Niners (Hill, O'Sullivan, Martin, Smith)
Texans (Rosenfels, Nall and Schaub)
Titans (36 yr old Collins, headcase Young)
Lions (Dallas' pick @ 20)
Eagles (McNabb?)

Can't think of one. And with the Jets, it's not even that I don't want to see Cassel play for them, it's that I want to see them pick more Gholston's with those #1 picks and watch their fans cry :D

2 first rounders? Pfffft... At that point I wouldn't even care if it was the Jests.

Miami. That would start a hsit storm.

Like we will get two firsts for Cassel. We may get one first. That comes down to how much competition there is for him. People are getting too caught up in the hype.
