Drafteks Pats selections as of 1/31

23 New England Eben Britton OT Arizona -10 Reach
47 New England Mike Mickens CB Cincinnati +2 Value
58 New England Clay Matthews OLB34 USC +10 Value
89 New England Andy Levitre OG Oregon State +1 Value
120 New England Keenan Lewis CB Oregon St +10 Value
151 New England Quan Cosby WRS Texas -8 Reach
186 New England Ramon Foster OT Tennessee -9 Reach
217 New England Darcel McBath FS Texas Tech +3 Value

In summary - 3 offensive linemen, 3 defensive backs, 1 outside linebacker, and 1 wide receiver. Wow... Draftek thinks that our OL is in terrible shape and that our Cornerbacks suck. The latter might be somewhat true... but that many picks on offensive linemen? I don't see that happening.

The good news is they pretty much picked good prospects.

New Era Scouting - 2/2/09

New Era Scouting Archive First Round Mock Draft

23. New England Patriots – Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forrest

The Patriots are also in a tight spot – the team is need of a corner or safety to improve the secondary. It's far too early for Missouri's William Moore, as the draft's top safety is coming off a far from impressive senior bowl. So the team will have "settle" for Wake Forest's Smith, a player we're high on. Smith was a four-year starter and has great speed, but his size (5-9) will make several teams worried about selecting him. He'll be one player who's measurements at the combine could greatly impact his draft stock.

Updated 2/3 with a few new mocks. None that have updated in the last two weeks have the Patriots taking an offensive player.

Brian Cushing and Aaron Maybin have joined DJ Moore as the top contenders.

Draft Daddy's Feb 9, 2009 mock.

Draft Daddy: Mock Draft
23. New England Patriots - CB D.J. Moore, Vanderbilt

Moore is an underrated athlete who can be used in a variety of roles, the Patriots value versatility.

Rotoworld did a mock first round on Jan 22nd and had the Pats passing on LB Brian Cushing and CB Vontae Davis, selecting Utah CB Sean Smith.

23. Patriots - Utah CB Sean Smith

Smith was used at tailback, wideout, corner, and nickel back by the Utes and the Patriots love versatility. The fourth-year junior goes 6'3/214 and likely could even play safety in a pinch. New England hasn't given up on 2008 second-round pick Terrence Wheatley and his chronic wrist problems yet, but Ellis Hobbs' rookie contract expires after 2009 and the Pats could find creative ways to use Smith. They're sorely in need of a shutdown corner.

Which once again leads to the question: what is a "shutdown" corner in today's NFL?

Updated 2/18 -- a few new mocks, and lots of updates

This page on nepatriotsdraft.com gives links to dozens of mock drafts, and a single-page view of whom the Pats select in the first round. No clear consensus, though it appears Aaron Maybin is getting picked as often as anybody for the Pats.

In their own mock they have the Pats going for CB DJ Moore of Vanderbilt at #23, C Max Unger of Oregon at #47, and DE Connor Barwin of Cincinnati at #58.

Updated 3/5 with a few new mocks and some updates:

Lots of the USC LB's and Laurinaitis

Finally got an update done Tonight - added 7 new drafts and updated lots.

Majority of the picks are USC LB's, some DB's/OT's, and one Connor Barwin.

Texans beat reporter's first round mock:
NFL: Check out my new mock draft
23 New England Connor Barwin, OLB, Cincinnati
Coach Bill Belichick always seems to need cornerbacks, and there are some good ones available, but Barwin will be too intrigued to pass up. This former tight end excelled when moved to defensive end last season. He projects to outside linebacker in a 3-4. He should be able to drop down and get the quarterback. He's got excellent size, speed and tenacity for the position.

And 3 out of 8 "experts," have the Patriots taking Clay Matthews.:D
Proof positive he's not Patriot material.

No excuses, play like a champion. Update this weekend I promise.

Updated 4/17 9pm -- Added a few more mocks.

Lots of RB's popping up all of a sudden.... weird.

Thanks man, work always gets in the way... Good work!
