1000 yards in a mike martz system, yes, it is. Especially considering he played in all 16 games the next year and only put up 600 yards. He put up 1000 yds that first year because he was a converted Safety and nobody even bothered putting anything above a nicklback on him. They were much more concerned with Roy Williams.
Teams that lose 12+ games a season put up a lot of passing yards.
How many 1000 yard receivers did Martz have this season in SF??? None, 900 yard receivers???? None, Isacc Bruce had 835 oh wait there is always Bryant Johnson who was just over 500 yards....and he was second on the team. I thought you or I could get a thousand yards in his offense???
Furrey caught nearly 100 balls when when he was starting at WR, he had more receptions then Williams and like one less TD. I think he was 3rd or 4th in the NFL that season in receptions and was not playing against a nickel corner. He was matched up most of the year against the # 2 corner then when he was getting 5-8 grabs per game they paid more attention to him so trust me I know my football.
In 2007 Detroit went back to Martz old stomping grounds where he found Furrey to get MacDonald and they also drafted Calvin Johnson third overall I think.
That is when he was moved more to the slot but was sharing the ball with Williams, MacDonald (who actually led the team in receptions), Furrey and the rookie Johnson. Not one of them had 1000 yards or 100 receptions Williams 64-838, MacDonald 79-943, Furrey 61-644 and Johnson 48-756 they simply spread the ball around is the reason for his drop in production.
Furrey is a solid receiver who does not mind doing the dirty work as well as the fact we can get this guy cheap I believe.
Now lets look at your last statement....the Bengals last year 4-11-1ranked 30 in passing yards. Then there is the Browns were were 4-12 and were ranked 31 in passing. Lets not forget about the high flying Lions who at 0-16 they were ranked 24th in the league.
The Chiefs were 20th in passing, the Raiders were dead last 32 but they had a 5-11 record. The Seahawks at 29th worse in the league and the Rams at 26th round out all the teams who were 11 and 12 loss teams not one cracked the top 20 in passing.
