Which LBs would you consider in round 1?

I've listed some of the top LBs according to drafttek.com (and this board).

I'm curious--which of these guys would make you happy if they end up in a Pats uniform?

I'm not sure what you're asking. Your thread title says one thing (who would you consider in round 1) and your poll another (who would make you happy). Connor Barwin would make me happy, but right now he's not a 1st round pick. Aaron Curry would make me VERY happy if we could get him, but not if we had to give away a king's ransom and break the salary structure of the team. I'm not a big Brian Cushing fan, but if we could get him in the 3rd round I'd be happy. So please clarify.

4 on the list I'd consider - Curry, Sintim, Barwin, Cushing. Curry will be gone long before we pick, though.

What I was aiming for was, "Who would you find acceptable/pleasing if the Pats took him in round 1?"

I don't think he is a first rounder but Greg Hardy I would seriously consider with San Diego's pick. He seemed to show up in big games in the past. Recorded a sack and a 1/2 against Florida and 3 sacks vs Alabama the year before. The knock is that they say his motor isn't always running. Still, if we wanted to go another route like Safety or CB in round 1, I'd take a look at this guy as an option to LB in round 2.

No, I'm talking about Lindell's kick that was going wide left until the wind knocked it wide right (assuming it ever actually reached the plane of the uprights ).

I'm pretty sure Hardy decided to stay at Ole Miss for his senior year.

The underlying problem I see throughout Laurinaitis’s game is that he’s deliberate, and he doesn’t play all that fast to begin with. When I watch his tape, it’s hard to imagine his playing style and pace translating to the NFL. It’s not just speed on the run, it’s strength, it’s explosion, it’s suddenness. He’s more of a read and react linebacker than a downhill linebacker, and I don’t know how he’ll pull that off with middling (at best) physical tools. I don’t see how he can stay in the middle, he’ll get run over way too often. Surely teams will want a more explosive physical talent on the weakside. He might be able to cover tight ends well, but he’ll often get steamrolled on the strong side, too. Honestly the best fit I see for Laurinaitis is an safety “8th man in the box” type of player who is also not a liability in coverage. I was underwhelmed when I watched his tape, and I can’t shake the feeling that he’s simply not going to be a playmaker in the NFL.

As DE, 3-4 rush LB, NE-style 3-4 OLB, DT, ILB, or whichever?

Everette Brown and Brian Orakpo are consistently ranked as Tops in the DE camp. Both could probably make the transition to OLB for NE, but Gholston and Crable are cautionary tales for setting expections too high for rookie OLBs in a BB 3-4. Even if BB thought they could contribute as rookies he'd need to wheel and deal to get up there for them.

Curry, Cushing, Sintim, and English are all getting mention as 3-4 rush LBs, but that's more for playing in a Blitzburgh or San Diego-style 3-4.

For a NE-style 3-4 OLB, Sintim is my favorite, Cushing and Matthews are also options for players who have some college experience in a 3-4 who could come in and contribute as rookies.

DT I haven't been looking at for their pass rush.

ILB: Curry would be a good prospect for WILB in NE. Maualuga was getting mentioned for his blitzing in the Senior Bowl practices, though I'd hardly call that a good look at his abilities against NFL competition. Cody Brown might be another WILB option in the third round and I'd like to work Sintim at SILB.

I"m starting to like Brian Cushing

Here's why i DON'T want Brian Cushing and neither should any other Patriots fan.

Based on the Senior Bowl alone, the player that looked like a true 3-4 OLB has to be Larry English. He was the best OLB prospect on the field to my eyes and plays with a nasty disposition and a good motor. He has some pretty good production to his resume and should be in the range(as of this date) where the Pats can move up to get him w/o giving up too much if they want to. Ideally I'd like to see a rusher emerge from the players they have currently in the wings. Then again, they did pretty well drafting a LB in the 1st round last year.

I'll go with Mathews, like some others.

I think Mathews has a teeny-tiny bit of Bruschi in him. Now don't go off on that one, but Mathews seems to get to the ball no matter what's in the way, a bit of the Bruschi rubberman.

On Bruschi, all this talk about him makes me realize what a special player he is / has been. Going all the way back to his play at Arizona, what was it , the Desert Swarm?? I don't think I have ever seen a college player as relentless as Bruschi was. Then add on all those All Pro years here in NE. He is a once in generation player.

Does Mathews have all that?? No, But a tiny bit.

I wonder if BB has ever watched some tape, jumps out of his chair and says that's just like #54, Gotta have 'em. Be amazing, watching him analyze a player.

To me Malaluga is dynamic and all, but very straight linish, can't get thru the trash like some made of rubber.
