Miguel: take note.

AdamJT13 from kffl reports that the Pats pushed $2,866,666 from the 2008 cap to 2009 via Vince Redd.

The way these deals normally work, for those interested, is to offer an in-season unlikely to be earned incentive bonus to some player. In this case, Redd might have received a bonus for leading the team in touchdowns or something. In-season unlikely to be earned bonuses count against your cap during that season, as I understand it. When they are not earned, they are credited against your cap the following year. The Pats did something similar last season.

Miguel can provide a more accurate description if this isn't right.

Minnesota and Philly have done it with big money over the past. Philly is up to $19mm in extra cap money - amazing.

But, for the Pats, every little bit helps.

Thanks...every lil bit helps...you are right!!!

I had projected that the Pats made done such a move in the neighborhood of $3 million which is why my guesstimate for the Pats' 2009 adjusted cap is $127 million when the announced cap has been $123 million.

Ahead of the game as always...a GREAT guesstimate....

Here's the interesting question--how much extra did they give Redd? The NFLPA has said they will raise a stink if teams don't give the player something for agreeing to renegotiate (since player contracts can only be renegotiated once every 12 months).

So approximately how much are the Pats under the cap for next year?

Miguel estimates that the Pats are currently around $18mm under the 2009 cap, factoring this $3mm in.

I saw that Scouts.com estimates that the Pats are $22.5 under the projected 2009 cap.

Some uncertainty right now.

Well, nothing is definite until they announce the official number. Miguel freely admits he does have to do a decent share of guess work when figuring out the cap number. I hope he is wrong and Scout.com is right though.

I wish the cap space were higher, but guess-work or not, Miguel has proven that he is much more accurate than the national sites when it comes to the cap space. His #s are always pretty much on the money. (no pun intended)

Unless the Cassel tag and trade stuff unfolds rather quickly, I think it will be a bit of a moot point - the Pats will be forced to fill their "holes" via the draft. Which I'm OK with. There really isn't much they can do via free agency either, and once Cassel is gone, they can extend Seymour/Wilfork and the likes. There are only two guys not on our roster (including UFAs that were on our squad) and not available during the draft that I'd go out of my way to add to this team, one is Asomugha and the other is Suggs, and even Suggs I'd only do it if it was a deal similar to AD's.

Well, say Scout.com is correct. The Pats will have something like $7-8 million available. That may be enough for the Pats to make one big splash or two decent splashes in free agency especially if they free up more space by cutting a player or two or extending or redoing deals.

Assuming the Scout's number is correct;
and assuming that the Patriots franchise Cassel:
yes, there would be $7-8mm total available -- but with the need to sign ~10-15 players.

Current free agents include:
Matt Cassel
LaMont Jordan
Heath Evans
Jabar Gaffney
Wesley Britt
Mark LeVoir
Russ Hochstein

Mike Wright
Pierre Woods
Larry Izzo
Eric Alexander
Lewis Sanders
Deltha O'Neal
Rodney Harrison
James Sanders
Ray Ventrone
Chris Hanson
Lonie Paxton

If not those guys, then a number of them would have to be replaced.
So $7-8mm isn't available to spend all on one free agent, under that scenario.

Why my numbers are different from Scouts.Com
1.) I am projecting that the escalators earned in 2008 by Wilfork ($700,000) Watson ($125,000), Kaczur ($740,000), and Hobbs ($940,000) were also earned for the 2009 season. That's a $2.545 million difference. Please note that it is very likely that these players' 2009 escalators will be higher.
2.) I am projecting that Jarvis Green has done enough to earn his 2009 $1.9 million roster bonus.
3.) I am projecting that Gostkowski has done enough to reach his 2009 escalator that will increase his 2009 salary from $530,000 to $1,010,000, a $480,000 increase.
4.) On the other hand, I am presuming that the Pro Bowl incentives for Light and Vrabel will be considered NLTBE for the 2009 season where they were LTBE for the 2008 season.

Thanks Miguel, I trust your numbers. :)

Thank you Miguel. :D

As I understand this number is for 51 players signed, already. In that case, the Rookie pool will be applied against the 51 signings, and not just in pure addition. Is that correct?

My numbers are for 49 players.

By the time the draft picks are signed in July, there will be more than 51 players on the Patriots roster which will mean for the most part (EXCLUDING the DAY 1 PICKS) that only the prorated signing bonus money will count against the cap
