Tell me about LB Gary Guyton

I was checking the roster and seen his name on it. Don't remember seeing him in the few games I got to see on TV.
Is he someone with a future with us?

I personally think he was ok his first year. Coming out of college he ran what I believe to have been the fastest 40 time out of any Linebacker at the combine. I think that when he played this year, he didnt appear as fast as his 40 time would indicate, meaning his game speed is slower than his straight line speed. I think he needs to put on bulk and strength this offseason because he appeared to get over powered at times this year. I think he isnt the most instictive player but is ok. I think his hips arent as fluid as they might be able to be, but he is a tall, lanky player so that probably takes some of that away.

All in all, he can be an above average starter in this league, although I am not sure he can be great. Im sure once he familiarizes himself more to the playbook he will get better.

This is my analysis of him.

Sorry bud, in those search results there's some very complimentary things that Bellichick has said about the kid... hard worker, constantly on the field, takes advantage of every opportunity he's given, is smart, and even admits that he probably should have been drafted in round 7 instead of Ruud. Thought that stuff might have been helpful since the crystal ball is broken these days.

All in all, he can be an above average starter in this league, although I am not sure he can be great. Im sure once he familiarizes himself more to the playbook he will get better.

That sounds just about what BB seems to think of him.. well rounded and versatile, can do a little of this and a little of that. Probably not a world-beater, but solid.

I feel that Guyton is going to become a solid contributor on this defense in the future. I disagree about the disparity between playing speed and timed speed. When he kicks it, he can run. Often, "fast" players lack the suddeness or explosion to be effective in their playing speed. Guyton showed me this season that he had pretty good acceleration, pretty good handwork and decent agility. He does have the quickness to compliment his speed. The knocks on him from this year mostly stem from him being a rookie in a complex scheme. He seemed to play like a rookie in his reads/assignments. That said, his improvement was visible. He was willing to attack guards, he was willing to do whatever was asked. He was willing to aggressively fill the A gap, he scraped well, I think he's better than he gets credit for. He's not going to play Mike in the base 34, but he will be highly effective working out of the sub-packages, or even the Will out of a pass-focused 4 linebacker set.

Ultimately, I think that Guyton will be with this team for a while. I think that he's a player, and one that can fill in situationally and be a very good player. In the event that he needs to takeover for somebody in the starting lineup, I think that he will be serviceable. I envision him as the Jarvis Green on the LB corps. Great situational, good fill-in if necessary.

I "yahooed" it, and I saw that he did very well in his rooke year. In fact he played well enough to start and get even many rep's before Tedy got hurt. I think the kid is a keeper.

the knock on guyton coming out of college was that he lacked instinct in both run and pass, and that he was more of an athlete than football player.......its been a common theme with recent Ga Tech LB's.....maybe all they need is the right coaching

You're right, Guyton is better, from my couch anyway. Hobson was like a wooden indian compared to the athletic Guyton. Seriously, Guyton was all over the place...

Seriously?
Wow.

Yeah, he was a key contributor.
Played a lot of special teams.
One of the first guys off the bench in the rotation at LB.
Played behind Bruschi, and played a lot of coverage LB, sort of like Phifer.
Had enough versatility that he also played some OLB, although he is clearly a better coverage ILB than OLB. Great speed at ILB, good range, decent instincts.
Tremendous value as an udfa.
He seems typical of the many faster LB's that have come out in the past three drafts, where we have said, post-draft, yeah, none of those guys really would have fit the Pats scheme, but he came right in as an undrafted player and had a major impact.

If I had a choice of Guyton or Izzo for next year on this roster, I would go with Guyton - he can play a similar role on ST with minimal drop-off, but can play a lot of defense.

Now to the topic at hand. GG has rare speed for a guy his size but he just didn't seem like he was always aware of where he was on the field, especially on the outside. He has long arms and is a great athlete which shows up defending the pass. He seems to always gets good depth and reads pass plays well and w/his speed he can cover the ground necessary to be effective in zone. He is a solid tackler but does need to build up his strength. The offseason program will help him tremendously. On the inside he seems to take good angles and can be a sideline-to-sideline defender. Has good balance and also uses hands well to fight through blocks. Maybe when he has a better understanding of timing the Pats will blitz him more, because he has more than enough quickness to turn the corner and excellent closing speed to make the play in the backfield. On ST's he covers kicks well and is a good blocker for returns. I think he did very well, especially for an UDFA and also think he'll make a tremendous jump in season two. I think we got lucky and found a very nice player, very cheap who we can lock up for at least 4 yrs and maybe 6 yrs depending on what happens with the cba. That's value and that's why UDFA's are just as important as draft picks.

The guy has physical skill that you can't teach. All he needs now is to figure out how to maximize that skillset. Luckily for him he's on a team that is best prepared to teach him how to use that physical gift and last year he got enough starter reps to lead me to believe he has a very bright future ahead of him on this team.
