Steve Mariucci on Cassel's trade value

“He’s a healthy young guy who has experience. So yeah, he’s a first-round [pick] easy. More than a first round. First and something else.” . . .

Mariucci believes the Patriots will end up keeping Cassel, even given the salary cap considerations.

“I would be shocked if he’s playing for somebody else, because you have to have – in this day and age – two good quarterbacks,” he said. “And sometimes that’s not enough.”

I wouldn't be surprised if that other good QB turns out to be O'Connell. . . .

It makes so much sense. Look at those teams with top 5 picks this year and need a QB. Do you want to commit 60+ million to an unknown kid, or take a guy who just had a top-10 season in the NFL and learned under Belichick?

All you need is two teams for a bidding war, so a 1st and some more is not too crazy.

Kiper's mock first rounder has Tampa taking Josh Freeman of Kansas State at 17. If you're going to do that, you might as well send the pick up here for Cassel. They have a team that is pretty good, not that far off. They need some tinkering of course, but they can do that with their other picks.

Hard to tell what the Patriots will get for Cassel. Weird things have happened in the NFL, but I can't believe they won't trade him - his value might never be higher. So in that respect, I think Mariucci's instinct is off.

There are soooo many crazy GMs out there that I'd be surprised if there ISN'T a bidding war of some kind.

I think just for agruments sake, that IF Kansas City Wanted Cassel, I would not want #3 due to the cost of signing that pick.

IF Kanas city wanted it they would have to give more than a straight up #10 pick from San Fran. I would then try like hell to trade down from #3.

I never quite get the people who say there is no way the patriots would want the 3rd pick, they would much rather have the 29th or some such foolishness. They would happily take the 3rd and trade it for 2 lower picks, or take one of the best players in the draft.

to think we would rather have the 29th over the 3rd pick is insane, although i think some people around here do think that. yes, the money to those players is very high, but there are a lot of things you can do with that pick, especially if there are elite players available up that high.

Sure - the 3rd would be nice - but who is going to trade a few picks FOR the third overall ? Moving down is becoming more difficult every year.

I suppose there would always be the chance that Sanchez (who would most almost surely still be available) would entice some crazy GM to take a chance on him. But barring an overzealous GM, the Pats would, yes - pick one of the top players avaible - but be stuck paying him more than most of the other players.

Anyone else get the feeling that Mariucci might not be paying attention to the fact that Cassel's price tag for this season is nearly $15 million?

And what, does he think Cassel will sign here long term as a backup? (After all, you need 2 good QBs nowadays - and sometimes that isn't enough) or that the Pats will want to commit $30 million a year to QBs for the forseeable future?

It was clear to me long ago that some of the football "experts" out there are just making it up as they go along.

I have commented several times this past season that I would not at all be surprised to see Cassel in a Pats uniform this coming season. People forget that he also has to be interested in going to another team. He, ultimately, also has a say in where he goes, and he might well elect to stay here.

I am not saying it's written in stone. Far from it. However, Cassel gets to have a say in where (if any) he goes and that, too, needs to be given some weight in the equation.

agree...you have to move him now while his value is red hot.........If the Pats keep him and he has to come in at some point next year and lays an egg.......there goes your opportunity...

I tend to think now....that BB can take any QB that he sees potential in.....and do the same thing that he was able to do with Cassel.

By the way, this is what Floyd Reese had to say about the Cassel situation, according to Adam Schefter:

One of Reese’s jobs will be addressing the Matt Cassel situation. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent and New England is expected to slap its franchise tag on him.

Previously, Reese might have assessed the Patriots’ situation on ESPN. Now he will do it for Belichick.

“It will be interesting and I’m sure there will be a lot of discussion on it,” Reese said. “I’ve always been one of those who has said that if you think you have two quarterbacks you probably don’t have one.

“But this is a situation where having two quarterbacks may very well be true. That will be something that we’ll have to sit down and work out and I’m sure there will be a lot of discussion back and forth.”

I'd love to see the Pats trade for an early pick, like #3. Then if they don't think there's value there, entertain trade offers from #4 - #10 or so to switch picks and throw in a 2nd round pick (or whatever the value is), then when it gets to #10 or so, entertain trade offers from #11 - 15 to switch picks and throw in a 2nd or a 3rd this year or possible a 2nd next year, then when they get to pick #15, take a good player at that spot. That way they wouldn't have the problem of overpaying a rook and they pick up a few extra 2nd rounders. I guess if that's your plan, the risk is that noone will offer you good value for the pick but it wouldn't be a bad problem to have. There's always a team drooling over a high pick.

How does this sound? I have already mentioned this blockbuster IMO. Trade Cassel to K.C. along with Maroney and Dave Thomas, for an exchange of picks in round one (our #23 for K.C.'s first round #3 pick), their second round pick at #34 and we get LJ who wants out and is only 29 and Gonzales (96 catches and a decent CAP with three years remaining).

The #34 pick is like a first rounder only way less dollars. Use that to select at #34 either Clay Matthews who can play ILB and is a top ST player (maybe the best of all this years draft S.Cal LBs in the pros it has been stated). He is 6'3" 247 and is faster than Cushing. Or Nic Harris from Oklahoma as a SS at 6'3" and 233 who runs a 4.5 and is an exceptional cover man. He can play in the box like Harrison. He has a 4.6 body fat measurement which is lowest on the Sooners. He is also an excellent citizen. Or perhaps Sean Smith of Utah who is 6'1" and 215 and can play CB and S. Or ....as an impact player, Percy Harvin who could be a game breaker if we do not want off of Gator WRs.

Now what to do with the #3 pick? Swap it to Carolina for Peppers. They do not have a first round pick. They have to use the Tag for top OT Jordon Gross.

Peppers wants out to go to a 3-4 team. Carolina can stay at #3 or milk a few added picks.

K.C. gets their QB. They move Gonzales who they wanted a third rounder for last fall and LJ wants out of town. Worse case is we trade LJ for picks. They get a young core that Pioli knows and drafted (Maroney is from that area).

I would still make one FA move and go for CB Dunta Robinson who is now back healthy and only 27. He also protects us in 2010 if Hobbs leaves.

Summary:
O gets TE Gonzales and RB LJ (perhaps Harvin at #34)
D gets OLB Peppers, CB Robinson, ILB Matthews or SS Harris

What we get in the next few picks are gravy. I like G Duke Robinson from OU, DE/OLB Paul Kruger from Utah (could be a Jared Allen type and the same size) and James Casey TE from Rice as in a Dallas Clark type HB/TE who had 104 catches last season. He has also played S and DE. He is smart, mature and a Pats type player. These should all be available in round two for our other two second rounders. I would put Barwin in there but he should be gone.

I would be a happy man with these pick ups.

So at the end of the day, yes I would take that #3 first rounder.
