Presume that this will take our own 1st and 2nd pick. We can't get into the top 10, but we should be able to reach 13-15 if we wish to. It is quite possible to get a Top 10 value player who slipped a bit. If we use our higher second, we might get as high as 11-12.

Everette Brown or Malcolm Jenkins, barring a major fall from Andre Smith or Michael Oher

Here's my list:

Curry LB Wake Forest
Raji DT BC
Maualuga LB (possibly)

Yes on Aaron Curry & BJ Raji
Maybe for a top OT - Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe

This team needs players on defense. They need to get young and get LBs that can blitz and get to the QB.

Although they may be legit high first rounders, I don't value OT as a round 1 need for this draft.

Ironically, our pick would have been right about there had Denver not choked. This mock has M.Jenkins falling to 14. NO could use extra picks. I think they lost a 2 in the Vilma trade.
I think the pass-rushers are 4-3 ends. E.Brown and Orakpo. I like the tackles but don't see
a need to trade up for one. I'll go with the A.Curry(no way does he drop that much) or
M.Jenkins guys.

Great Blue North Draft Report

I don't understand how Denver not choking would affect us. If they had beaten SD and finished 9-7 and won the division we would still be picking #23. Only our 2nd round pick from SD would have moved up, not our 1st round pick.

I know the question asks the hypothetical... but I really hope they do not move up. I think they can maximize their haul by staying put with the number of picks they have (or even acquire more) instead of putting all of their "eggs in one basket" and hoping to hit gold (though... upon further review, they don't seem to miss on many #1s),

My bad. Senior moment I guess. You're right I was thinking 2nd round.

Not to wuss out on the question, but I'm waiting to see what Maualuga does at the combine. He seems to lack change-of-direction skills, but if he times well on the shuttles and cone drill then I'd pick him up.

This could change based on combine performances, further scouting info, and the Patriots free agency additions, but I would trade up for Everette Brown, Aaron Curry, and possibly Jason Smith.

I like BJ Raji as a player, but I question whether he's what the Patriots are looking for in a 3-4 nose. It seem like he's more of a penetrator, even at his size, than a block eater. I have seen some reports even call him a 3 technique in a 4-3.

From what I've seen of Raji he could play multiple roles, and could probably play in both a 4-3 and a 3-4. I think we could do amazing things with him in addition to our current DL, running mutliple sets - put him next to Wilfork and run a "big" 4-3, put him at DE at times, use him to spell (or in case of injury) to any of the DLs, etc. Much as I love Curry or getting a great pass rusher, I think BB could do more with Raji than any other player.

nobody.......the only guy for the pats to move up for is curry and he will be gone...........better to keep the 2 picks......

actually, I would like to see the #23 moved for a 2nd and 3rd rounder.......better value in those rounds

There is noone in this draft I can see that would be worth using the #23 and one of our seconds. Not even Curry. The cumulative talent of two top 60 players is much higher than one top 15 player.

I can see a move down the board is more likely than a big move up. If a 'Ravens' like trade (the #23 for a mid-2nd and next years #1) were offered I would think they would jump. Especially if they end up with another 1st for Cassell.

I would not trade the #23 and and a second to move up to 14; but i would consider a 1st and 3rd to move up to 19 or so is somene is falling... :)

That's a good-looking threesome, I agree that all seem like solid values and fits.

I like the idea of trading a 1st and 3rd to move up much better than trading a 1st and 2nd. I think this is realistic. I'm not sure I would see anyone falling to 19 worth trading up for though. In my dream scenario we would get #18 or 19 from Chicago or TB for Cassel (plus a 2010 conditional pick) and then be able to package it with #86 to move up to somewhere around 14. This would give us something like #14, 23, 47, 58 and 97 (assuming a supplemental pick for Asante Samuel) in the first 3 rounds. :)

Raji's moved up too far and fast for me to even consider now, he's going to go way higher than he should. This is a weak DT class from the looks of it, a couple months ago I was hoping Raji could be snagged as a low first rounder or a high second. Curry is another guy I'm not sold on at all, he'll go too high given his physical skills. I'd rather go after Everette Brown or Jason Smith if the Pats move up, physically dominant, football smart players who produced consistently. I watched a lot of both, especially Smith who plays at nearby Baylor, and would move up for either gladly. Smith may not last that long, he has the best feet of any tackle in the draft, but it never hurts to dream...

I think the only guy I want to trade up for is Curry and we likely can't do that with what we have....So I hope Cassell can somehow net us what we need to get Curry.

If not which I would expect I think this draft is pretty heavy in defensive talent in the first round as there seem to be a ton of LBers and a normal amount of DL and DBs so we should stay put and maximize what we can get out of this draft.
