How much draft work has been done - and what's Pioli allowed to take with him?

Obviously Pioli left here on the best of terms and with Belichick's blessing.

That said, I was wondering if anyone had any insights on how much pre-draft work is typically accomplished at this time of year, and what preliminary decisions have been made, seeing as the organization has a full college season of scouting under their belts.

I'd imagine that Pioli is typically pretty engrossed in that once the regular season trading deadline has passed, and likely has a good idea of who he'd like to target for the organization. More than likely he left the Pats with everything as in good shape as it could be leading into the draft.

Given his leaving on such good terms, what information, if anything would he leave with, regarding draft prospects? While I can't imagine him walking out the door with DVDs of scouting reports, by the same token, I'd have to think he did plenty of work and scouting at home as well as at the office and isn't exactly showing up to work for the Chief's as a clean slate and empty handed.

Anyone have any thoughts or insights on this? I'd have to think that later in the draft the Patriots could see themselves and the Chiefs vying for many of the same players, no? Especially this year as both Pioli and Belichick's decisions are largely based on the same pool of scouting reports and data.

He shouldn't be allowed to take anything. All of the work he did as a Pat's employee is property of the Pats. Of course they can't erase his memories.

I thought ESPN recently reported, via the Herald, that the Patriots were suspected of memory cleansing as well?

It's very easy to copy DVD's now ... what difference would it make, Pioli is a smart guy he already knows who he will be targeting in the first day of the draft this year.

We actualy have those Men in Black thingy's, all out going employees get zapped.

Pioli doesn't even know he worked for the Patriots.

While Pioli probably has some notes he took with him, the biggest challenge will be putting together his draft board with his new coaching staff - the coach is going to dictate the scheme and that will dictate who they target in the draft. For all we know, Pioli brought in his scouting staff, gave them an introductory course in the new scouting program basics and sent them out to review their reports using the new guidelines. I'm not too concerned that Scott walked off with proprietory information that will make that much of a difference.

It's a good thing the Chiefs and Patriots don't have selections close to each other, even if they do have differing needs.

Based on our knowledge of how Belichick operates I think it's safe to say he almost always gets a player he has listed in his groupings. So even if Pioli or whoever knows what we need Belichick will get most of what he feels the team needs for the draft which is a but a portion of how he builds anyways.

You never know where players are going to fall or how one's going to move around the draft board.

I'd expect Pioli's going to want to have a coach who at least has a similar philosophy to what BB employed - i.e. Pioli's good at finding players for guys like Belichick ... don't expect him to hire someone who's the opposite.

That being said I'm sure he and whatever coach he hires is going to use the talent, such as it is, on the Chiefs and adapt accordingly - so they sure won't be Patriots clones. But generally I do think Pioli will be looking seriously at many of the same players the Patriots will be. I'd prefer that not be the case but as they say, "it is what it is"

I think it's reasonable to assume that Pioli had copies of just about everything he ever worked on for the Patriots and that he didn't delete them from his own computers after he left. I think the real question is whether he would ever show that material to anyone else. Here, I think the answer is no because he seems like an ethical guy; but he sure would use it to his advantage. I don't think anyone would be surprised at or have a problem with that.

Since he seems honorable, I doubt that he will ever reveal anything about a current Pats player that the team and player would regard as private in some way, but I do think that he would also likely use that information, without revealing it to others, if it helped him. Once again, I don't think there's any problem with that.

Assuming he didn't take all the scouts in the scouting dept., the Pats will still have a wealth of information from this last year. I'm assuming the scouts had meet with him in December to run over their overall assessments in specific on-the-field categories and have submitted their interview info from individuals close to a great number of prospects.

The measurables from last year's juniors should had been recorded after each pro-day, so they have some info already set aside somewhere. Of course that will all be re-evaluated after these all star games, pro days and the combine.

Basically, I figure that the scouts have all the info and that losing the entire scouting department (or at least one covering the SEC regions, etc) would be far more of an issues for the Pats. Pioli, no doubt, is well informed of what he will find in the draft. I'm sure he has a few players on his list and I can guarantee that he will have his new scouts re-evaluate their grading of prospects based upon a new system.

The needs of the Chiefs and the Pats are light years apart, as is their draft order.. with that being said there seems to be less and less of an affinity for a top 10 pick.. will Scott play "Bill" games and try to build for the future, time will tell???

No but the Falcons and the Patriots do at #23/24 so it will be interesting to see if Dimitroff and Pats FO are targeting the same 'type' of player, if not the same player and to see if either tries to move up....

What needs to be understood here is that in many cases the Patriots start scouting these players 2 years out, so Pioli likely has plenty of info on the players NE's been looking at in this draft class. He's also worked with BB for quite a long time, so they'll likely be interested in similar players throughout the remainder of their careers. When it comes to this particular class though, I think Pioli's early targets will likely come at Positions of strength for NE.

When the Pats look at players, they look for ones who are specifically better than the players they have. Pioli would take with him half of the work necessary to run a good draft; he knows the potential draftees, but he does not necessarily know how they size up to his current players. Add in the fact that the Chiefs don't pick near the Pats and the players the Chiefs would pick probably wouldn't be available around the Pats' picks anyways, and the move probably doesn't impact the Pats' draft board.

2. Everything that he remembers or copied

The question asked what he was allowed to take. Intellectual property law restricts him from taking copies. Anything he created while employed by the Pats is the property of the Pats and he has no right to it.

Don't worry about him taking any of our predraft info because it won't help him there. It may be a small advantage but we are one team out of 31 opponents Pioli has to figure out. The Chiefs are a whole different animal they have 3 times as many holes and questions than we do.

1. A Lot
2. Everything that he remembers or copied

I don't believe that Pioli would have taken anything with him other than what he remembers. It will be interesting to see if Pioli hires a lot of scouts for the Chiefs and has them form their own scouting department going forward or if he falls back to using the services.
