What happens to Matt Cassel?

I'd like to see him franchised and brought to camp to compete for the starting job. If Brady's back to his old self (his targeting should be rock solid fairly quickly) then you can trade him for a player(s) that camp might be leaving you thinking you don't have (like a draftee LB looks shaky but one can be had via trade).

There's good logic in measuring the two against each other as they are in '09. Probably better than an extra draft pick.

That would be called "selling low," especially if the market for Cassel is as high as it appears to be.

It would also be called positive risk management, which is more valuable in my opinion. Plus, a proven player over an untested rookie is also positive risk management.

Also, this "selling low" business is a bit lazy, considering it doesn't look at the bare-bones facts that it's turned a 7th round draft pick into a winning season, a solid insurance policy and a trade chip for at least a high quality player.

i just see a problem in letting a very good QB leave when we have an unsettled QB. it was a terrible injury and may be difficult to overcome. we have great insurance, and if we have to lose another player to keep MC for a year to make sure TB is ok, its a no brainer

I don't have a problem with keeping Cassel if Brady's 2009 is in serious doubt. However it's not what I expect because :

- I don't think Brady's 2009 is in serious doubt.

- I think Jeff Garcia (or similar) would get us through (part or all of) the season should Brady be out and O'Connell not be ready.

- If we can really get a #1+ for Cassel it's just too much to turn down IMO.

I think a guy like Garcia could do much of what Cassel did for us last year. A team that needs a long term solution is better off trading for Cassel but a team like us that might need a short term solution is better of trading Cassel and having the almost done vet.

i think a lot of times, people here are saying, "oh, 75% of Brady is better than X% of Y player." the problem is, 1, youll never know until Brady gets on the field and starts gettin hit. and 2, you dont know his mindset. it would have to change i think. i do believe he is very resilient and if anyone can come back, but you really never know.

Fair enough on the "selling low." Here's a stronger argument for trading for picks in 2009, or especially in 2010: if the Patriots are as good as we think they are/will be, they will have a hard time signing UFAs in 2010, making high draft picks all the more important.

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

Problem is....IF Brady can't go.....and Cassel plays next year and does not do well.....his trade value is gone........I see us trading him while his value is at its highest point.....Now, as to whether he would fetch a 1st rounder.....we will have to wait and see....I don't see it.....

Completely agree. Ridiculous to wait. Sell high.

Assuming that Cassel is franchised and that the Pats braintrust feel Brady is good to go for next season:

I believe that after being tagged, and prior to Cassel signing said tag, Cassel's agent gets busy and secures a mutually agreeable contract with a team interested in acquiring the services of Cassel. The agent brings this contract back to the Pats in order to see if they wish to match it. The Pats decline to do so and, in return for not doing so, secure draft pick compensation from that team, in the form of a 1st round pick this year as well as a 1st next year.

I see Cassel playing for one of either the Niners, Texans, Jets, Bucs, Lions, Vikes, or Titans next year. Jets less likely due to their sal cap woes. I suppose it's also possible that the Rams, Chiefs, Seahawks or Jags could also factor in though I think the only way they'd get involved is if they traded down from atop their early perch in the 1st round in advance of the draft.

Obviously I am presuming that those teams I list as potential participants have a 1st round selection this and next year at the time of this transpiring.

What would you all think if Cassell were traded together with our #1 for KC's 1st and 2nd rounder?

Why didn't the poll have a "he'll get pissed on by a drunk" option? Man, this is just so flawed.....

:D:D:D:D:D I bet he will always remember Superbowl 43 hahahahha

I don't think the Pats package a 1st rounder to move up and get a 2nd. My gut tells me they trade him straight up for the most they can get in the draft. Even Reiss suggested that trading him for an established player would be intresting, but I just don't see it.

what do people think of this i just thought of it when someone mentioned a package deal. if we were to trade with the likes of kansas or san fran. we swap firsts and get their second. would people be happy with that? because we could get that impact top 5 or 10 player and also have yet another pick in the high 2nd round. i think that would be a big win for the pats

Mr. Minority here... thought about it some more. I still let him walk, I would rather go after a top free agent (Suggs, Asomugha, Dansby) or a couple of mid-tier guys (Phillips-Tampa, McFadden-Pitt, Hayden-Colts). To me the FAs fill needs and are starters for 3-5 years versus a draft pick which is 50/50 at best.

I would think that Pioli was still on the patriot payroll.

Keep Cassel and trade him when Brady is ready. Pay him whatever, I want a championship next year and he is our best option if Brady is out. Forget Garcia or any other free agents. Look what Cassel did this year. Give him another year under this system and what out!!! Compare his numbers to the other QB's and you will see how good he did for us. Had it not been for Farve and the Jests loosing the game to Miami, we would have been in the Superbowl. Thats how confindent I was at the end of the season.

Well the front office proved 80.1% of us wrong.

we weren't that far off... only 2 picks away from the majority vote (1st rd pick) and better than the average 2 rd. pick (2nd highest votes)
