Re: Cassell would accept being Bradys backup

Gotta look back now and think, "Well, Clearly I'm not as good as that. Guess the Belichick guy is pretty smart".

Ha, I actually think about that sometimes. I wonder if Drew has admitted that to himself. I wonder if I could.

I say that says alot about him, he enjoys here, and enjoys his role.. Hope the Pats sign him as insurance if nothing else at a decent salary. Say a 3 year deal..

The idea that Bledsoe was a class act was only a result of his real attitude and actions being hidden from the public.

Which is, ultimately, which makes it classy to me. Nobody who is truly competitive is going to take being demoted with a smile and a nod, not when they still feel like they have years to give which Bledsoe did.

Another thing to note is that cassel is only 26. If he signed a 5 year contract, he would only be 31-32 when it ends.

I doubt he would ever burn his bridges with BB is a return down the road could be plotted.

I find that very refreshing to hear that Matt may choose to stay and be a back than leave and search for the big bucks. however if he feels that he wants to be a starter somewhere else good for him.

The only way Matt Cassel stays as a backup is with atleast $14M worth of guaranteed money. I can't see how agreeing to take $14M makes you classy.

I mean, hes not being un-classy (?), but he is taking a $14M pay check to be a backup.

Talk about from the outhouse to the Penthouse.

Ha ha ha ha.....that is too funny!

Ridiculous Title of Post. He never came close to saying he would be Brady's backup. All he said is the Patriots are Tom's team. Amazing how the media twists what is said and what he really meant by it. No way he accepts a backup role in New England.

Well, if the Patriots franchise him and refuse to trade him--which they would be within their rights to do--his only options would be (assuming a healthy Brady) to ride the pine or hold out (and not get the $).

But the risk to him of "holding out" i.e. not signing the franchise tender is that the Pats can withdraw it at any time. Granted it would make him a free agent but it would mean walking away from $14+ million guaranteed which is quite a raise from $500K that he earned last year (2700% bump if my math is right)
