Figured it's worth asking here.

FWIW, on Moron & Moron in the Morning, they both think the Pats will probably franchise and keep Cassel.

There's nothing wrong with keeping Cassel for a year and guaranteeing we have a good QB next year. I'd certainly trade him, though, and get something good for him. Just like I would have F&Ted Assante as opposed to having him for one year then losing him for a comp pick.

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

If Brady is PUP'd or worse, you have to keep Cassel unless you have faith in O'C after one year. The problem is you can forget about FA. You'll need to have a monster draft.

My guess is they will give O'C a try and sign a vet in FA. Get value for Cassel today. IMO it will never be higher then it is now.

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

Helping our cause is the senior QB at the Senior Bowl have been as horrible as expected. With juniors being more risky than the already high risk average young QB, Cassel should be amazingly attractive. There is no depth to this QB class at all and even the top two have their own serious questions.

I doubt Brady will be PUPed but we can sign a veteran like Jeff Garcia just in case. There was less need last year as Brady had never been hurt. Garcia and O'Connell would be OK while we wait if it means getting some good picks. Keeping Cassel in that scenario would be OK too but in no way would they HAVE TO keep him.

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

So many Cassel threads I don't know where to put this. I'll put it here. This is from a guy at the Senior Bowl, he's been around for a while and is legit (as in he's not making stuff up, not that everything he says happens).

"--the market for Matt Cassel is higher than you probably think. Like a first this year and a 2nd next year high, and you'd better believe the Pats will get it if they want."

That was a day after this (which, I believe, is related to the value above) :

"Overheard right at the end of practice, don’t know who said it: “What a sh***y year to need a quarterback.” That drew lots of affirmative laughs and nods, including ones from Lions GM Martin Mayhew and Redskins coach Jim Zorn."

Source? :)

[And, BTW, do you think anyone outside New England really wants to see the Pats with six picks in the first three rounds of this year's draft? :D]

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

Cassel's stock is high, and the weak QB class in the draft helps the cause. I would say anything after the middle of the first round.

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

I don't see the Pats keeping Cassel. I still think concerns about Brady may be overstated by Curran. I also think Cassel will never be more valuable in a trade and the Pats can get far more value then they will ever get. You don't pass up a potentially high first round and another high pick on maybes.

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

Cassel's value is no doubt at it's highest right now, at least as for as the Patriots are concerned. I would like to see him dealt for a first rounder at least, so we may build our defense. I would also be content seeing a vet signed to back O'C if for some reason Tom has to sit out the season. Perhaps a Kerry Collins or Jeff Garcia. One year deal or so

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

If we trade MC for a higher pick, who would we even be looking at?

Obviously the defense is getting a rebuild in the off season, I don't think you are going to get too many people disagreeing with that... Any names coming out this year that are a must in the top 10 or 15? I would have really loved to see Lauriniaitis in New England, but I don't see that happening.

So who is really worth picking up so early in this draft?

I do! I do! :D

BTW: from the posted link:

Opinions on USC QB Mark Sanchez are widely varied. His performance and skill-sets impress everyone, but his lack of experience and talent gap between his supporting cast and the weak Pac-10 defenses trouble many people here. Trojans coach Pete Carroll came here to lobby for Sanchez, and lots of prominent NFL talent evaluators think he's the top QB in this draft. But some folks are seriously scared by his inexperience and how little he's faced tough competition.

Cassel having a strong sense of the pace of the NFL and facing real NFL teams is going to keep giving him an edge. I think he's the first QB to go in the draft (so to speak).

I live in Maryland, and that's outside NE and I really want to see the Pats with 6 in the 1st 3...:D

Problem is....IF Brady can't go.....and Cassel plays next year and does not do well.....his trade value is gone........I see us trading him while his value is at its highest point.....Now, as to whether he would fetch a 1st rounder.....we will have to wait and see....I don't see it.....

Re: 1/23/08: What happens to Matt?

This thread is over half a day old and nobody's mentioned that the date on the title is last year's?

It is a rough transition for me I still sign half of my crap at work as 08 but good eye. I would agree that we need to trade Cassel while his value is at it highest and like Jeff Garcia as a Vet we could pick up to work as a backup. Matt Schaub was worth a flip flop in the first round between the 8th and 10th pick plus a second rounder and another second the fallowing year. Schaub had two starts (one against us where he threw for almost 300 yards and 3TD's) but did not have the resume Matt Cassel has after this season. I think best case scenario we get a first and a third rounder this year with a conditional pick in 2010 depending how Cassel does. I really like SF at # 10 but I think that it will be the Vikings.
