Will we draft a running back ?

I made a post over a month ago, in favor of drafting Beanie Wells if he was still available. Most of you were against the pick and after reading your quality posts, you convinced me we should not pick Wells.

What about Shon Green or Rashad Jennings later in the draft?
Green may be available in the 2nd round and Jennings could be available for our comp pick at the end of round#3. He may slip (I doubt it) to us in round #4.

My sleeper pick is Gartrell Johnson.
He should be available in the 4th round or later.

I would like to get a banger.... I am sick of the Maroney two step dancing.

What do you think?

I don't think it is a need but RB is one of the positions you can never have enough of. There life span is so short and they take big beatings that IMO you get as many good ones as you can. So drafting one is fine by me and because I feel the only real need on this team is DB and I also feel the need there is more for Vets because of young guys like Wheatly, Whilhite, Merriweather, and Hobbs so I am OK with drafting a RB as high as one.

Shonn Greene in round 2 or 3 would be nice. He's a bruising back with size and power - 5'11 235 lbs. That would be a complement to what the Pats want to do - control the clock and pound the football with the running game. And hopefully he'd be healthier than our current 'made out of glass' RBs.

I don't want to see the Pats using a day one pick on a skill position. I think day one is primarily reserved for the big uglies at the line or a potential stud defensive back.

Faulk took a pounding this past season & he can't be expected to repeat that same effort much longer. So adding someone on day two is certainly plausible.

Maybe I am wrong but wouldn't DB or at least CB be considered a Skill Position or are skill positions only on offense?

Seems like a good answer to me. Even if you're frustrated with Maroney, he's averaged 4.5 and 4.3 the last two years. With smart hard runners like Sammy and Lamont and Faulk showing no sign of inability to do what he does better than anyone, let's be patient with a good guy with lots of upside.

I'd like to see them be more consistent using the run. Nothing wrong with a low rounder for the future too.

They've done pretty well lately finding guys that can role play (or more) at the NFL level after the Draft, i.e., The Law Firm and Patrick Cobbs.

With a wounded Brady coming back, a full stable of RB's to keep the option open seems prudent. Brady isn't going to need rushers pinning back their ears for the first half of the season at least. As it appears Jordan won't be back, someone like Shon Greene or a Faulk repacement should be added.

Outside of 2 games where he played having a chip on his shoulder, Lamont was mediocre.

I wasn't much of a Lamont fan myself. Banged up almost all year, got to run behind the offensive line when it was healthy and run blocking real well. I think most backs could've done what he did if not better. He didn't seem to have much speed left at all.

Rashad Jennings is the guy I want in this draft. Reminds me of Michael Turner. If they sign a vet instead, Fred Taylor's my guy as he'll likely be cut by the Jags and I think he still has enough in the tank for a damn good year or two in New England.

I would describe Jordan as solid and adequate. Competent. Not awesome. We're fine with Maroney, Morris, BJGE, Faulk and Evans. There's not really room for another unless there's an injury. I would consider a draftee if Maroney is still expected to struggle with the shoulder; if he's expected to be 100% finally then I wouldn't.

He had a 4.5 yard average and 4 TDs in the small time he played I would say that is more than adequate but my point was that we need someone who is healthier with more upside than we need another band aide that plays well when in there.

Pretty sure someone ready this board in Feb knows the G Mills story.

Get more protection for the Franchise, would have more size to deal with some DE's, like the Keith Byers role. Maybe play H-back, 3rd TE.

Personally can't see RB that much of a focus on day one, but always plan for the unexpected draft pick.

i was against this to begin with and would still be against this if we only had one 1st round pick... BUT. If we get a highish 1st round for cassel. then when i think about it i really would not mind harvin. i think having that faulk like running back is very important to the pats offense and i know faulk had one of his best seasons last year but the guy is a freak like that its hard to expect that next yr or the yr after i hope he does but you never know. i think harvin would be good because he can play receiver but he can also be in the 3rd down shotgun package with faulk or as a replacement for faulk. other than that tho i think we are pretty set at rb atm.

I've pondered the value of James Casey and Shawn Nelson, but don't see it doing that much for the team. I expect Heath Evans back, we'll see if B-Jeepers has made any progress in blitz pick-up when the Training Camp reports start rolling in, I expect the Pats to sign at least one UDFA RB. More importantly, I'm looking for them to draft an interior OL to replace Hochstein or Yates behind Neal with a greater level of talent.

That's a round too early, but he's one I like.
