If we get a 1 and 2 for Cassel. I doubt if they will both be this year. I wouldn't be shocked if we got a 2 this year, and a conditional pick next year based on his performance and team he gets traded to.

We will get a minimum of a 1st round pick for Cassel. I think a 1 and 3 is what is most likely. There is no doubt he brings in a 1st round this year. Too many teams need QB's and this isn't a strong QB class. I hope it is San Francisco, but I believe Minny will be the biggest player for his services.

7 picks in the first 3 rounds is possible via either getting 2 picks in the '09 draft for Cassel or through trade downs if only 1 '09 pick is in a projected Cassel trade.

If the Patriots do end up with 7 (or even) 6 picks in the first 3 rounds, I'd hope they would trade one or more of them for either an established player (my preference) or future draft picks. Everyone drafted in the first 3 rounds has to make your football team, and I can't see the Patriots carrying more than 6-8 rookies on next years squad. We'd still have 4 later picks and undrafted free agents to consider. This year we had Mayo, Wheatley, Crable, O'Connell, Wilhite, Slater, and Guyton make the opening day roster for a total of 7 rookies.

If they can get two defensive and maybe one offensive starter from this draft, plus two rotational guys, that would be awesome. I just don't want a repeat of 2007, with a ton of draft picks that disappeared.

Last season was a youth movement on defense, this season looks to have some of that again - isn't that what so much of the fuss has been about in recent years? That said I'm expecting the Pats to use some of those day two picks to move around the board for players they want. I'm also expecting NE to move at least one early pick forward to 2010 where there projects to be a better pool of 3-4 DL.

He has that tall almost lanky build. But, looks to be about 6'5" 300lb. Good
athlete. Very tough at point of attack. Enough of an athlete to get a push on
pass rush too. I was hoping Maybin/Evans returned to give PSU a defesive line
reminiscent of the B.Clark/M. Millen line. But, the de's left early.

I saw his name on the NFL Draft Scout 2010 DT ranking and he was part of the pool I'm looking at when I consider moving a Day One/3rd round pick forward to 2010.

Break it down position by position including reserves and two-way players and then consider that you've got a couple more years of high flying offense so lay it on the line and work to develop your D to carry you through the next O transition...

CB - 4 youngsters, any of whom could be upgraded
S - 1 youngster, 1 tweener, 2 gaps
DE - one long term near Pro-Bowl, two 1 year Pro-Bowl/Starter, one solid reserve, one developmental kid, one gap
NT - one 1 year Pro-Bowl, one or more gaps
OLB - two aging veterans, one rotational developmental player, four+ developmental projects
ILB - one aging veteran, one DROY starter, one rotational reserve, one over priced RFA

I see room for 1 Day One CB, and some Day Two/UDFA competition.
Room for 3-4 Safeties/Tweeners
Room for 2-3 DE
Room for 1-2 NT
Room for 2-3 OLB
Room for 2-3 ILB

Presume 1 pick for Cassel and 3 comp picks and you could spend all 11 just on defense. That's not the way it will be handled, but I can see room for 1-2 offensive rookies and 4-5 defensive rookies making the roster...and that's before the Practice Squad is built or not counting that BB might decide to buy himself a young Punter (Huber or Gano would be nice projects). With this draft class, I expect NE could wind up carrying as many as 5-7 rookies on the roster and Practice Squad again - it's a promising draft class, much easier to shop this one than the 2007 market.

Our early picks should be something like this:

1/r1: #10 (from SF) or #20 (Det) or #22 (Minn) - trade for Cassell
2/r1: #23 - our 1st
3/r2: #48 - from Chargers
4/r2: #58 - our 2nd
5/r3: #89 - our 3rd
6/r3: #98 (or so) - comp pick for Assante.

We seem to always trade picks for next year though. I wouldn't be shocked if we
trade sd's for a 1st next year. We convert the 3 from the trade last year into a 1st. Trade down to get a possible pro-bowler Mayo. Takes 2 yrs but convert that 3rd rounder into another 1st..but pure genius.. But we already know that. Carolina traded a 2 and this years 1st for Philly's 1st last year. So, their 1st pick is around 60. They're going to be dying to
draft by the time 48 rolls around. Maybe they would.
