Simple question

I don't think he will, there are too many needs to fill. Franchising Cassel would eat up virtually all of their cap room and make it difficult to sign a veteran Safety or Inside linebacker.

IMO the Patriots would be lucky to get two 2nd round picks in return, they are virtually guaranteed a 3rd round comp in 2010. It just doesn't seem worth the risk.

A single second this year and making sure he doesn't go to the Jets is WAY more valuable than a third next year.

This is a no brainer, he will be franchised.

No. We will just resign him and trash Brady

Yes he will be. Even if Brady isnt healthy, we need to trade Cassel while his stock is high. We have O'Connell waiting in the wings until Brady comes back.

I do think Brady will be ready for 09 though

O'Connell?????? Dude we just trained our 2nd backup QB to be a starter this decade we really dont need a 3rd, besides carson palmer's knee injury wasnt as bad, but he was and still isnt the same (yes i do know that Cincy is awful, but that doesnt mean carson is). so we should trash brades and keep cassel

The multiple leaks by the Pats to Lombardi and Mort earlier that he would be franchised were probably designed to drum up early trade negotiations. I think he will be franchised.

Yes. No brainer. He's valuable, we won't give him up for nothing. He's also insurance. Whether he signs the franchise tender, signs a long term contract, or gets traded is another matter, but we won't just let him walk.

Palmer had his best completion percentage when Rudi Johnson posed a credible running attack the year the Bungals went to the playoffs. His numbers dropped off a little when Cincy became one-dimensional. He missed most of the season with an elbow injury.

His numbers the year after his playoff injury look pretty much like his season averages before and after the injury. The team got worse around Palmer, Palmer did not get worse himself.

In response to the OP, I understand the trade value argument but that figure is a heck of a turkey to eat if teams don't bite. Unless Brady's rehab raises questions, I would bet against the Pats franchising Cassel.

Of course, no question. Then, they need to move him pretty quickly between February and April 24. The closer the draft gets, the more leverage the suitors will have in negociations. If the pats end up stuck with Cassel and Brady on the roster, they are going to be handcuffed on the retains, early re-signs as well as in free agency.

IMO the Patriots would be lucky to get two ND round picks in return, they are virtually guaranteed a RD round comp in 2010. It just doesn't seem worth the risk.

I disagree.......there are many teams that need a QB. Cassel is now an experienced, winning QB with great upside and talent.

If you need a QB, you have a few free agent old guys and a couple of first rounders and Matt Cassel.

I think he brings at least a high one or a mid/low one and a three, this year and that is being conservative.

i've heard a lot of 'can we afford to franchise him?'s but can we really afford NOT to?

Probably the wrong topic..but really, if Tom's not ready...or whatever next season, how ready IS o'connell?

we have to keep Cassel. Hes gone from "He sucks" to "best qb ever" on Patsfans.com within months. Better than Warner. Better than Roethlisburger. Good enough to trade Tom Brady. So how can they let Matt Montana go????

We have a QB who has just won 11 games, with a couple 400 yard games. We have a HOF QB who we don't know will be ready to go straight away next season and we have a rookie. We are to just give up our 11 game winning 400 yard passing QB for a comp pick? Not so sure that is the best idea

Simple answer....YES.....and then he will be traded.......unless Brady isn't coming back and Belichick elects to ride him through one more year, or part of next year......In that scenario, you MAY depreciate Cassel's trade Value.....as our schedule next year is pretty tough..........I am hoping they can move him for good picks this year.......and get Okee or Gutz or some vet involved if Brady can not return for 09.......

I think what you have to look at .....is against our schedule this past year, there are many vet QB'S that if they knew our system, could have rattled off the same stats.........Not to take anything away from Matt.....He had a great year based on his abilities...and showed incredible fire and guts......But if we return the same O next year, there is nothing to say yet, that Okee or Gutz, or some other vet coming in (especially if they come in NOW and learn the system)......Can't do THE SAME THING. Now, of course, next year, we have a much harder schedule to play.....so whether it is cassel or another backup....it will be a test.

Obviously we are all dying for Tom to come back.....that is the only GOOD answer to anything involving our offense......But if he can't.....don't be shocked if one of the other backups.....or a FA vet coming in.....will not get the same results or similiar.....

Looks like a lot of people don't think the same way that you do. :)

Thank god for that :) time will tell. The masses are wrong as much as they are right.

Personally I would rather sign a couple of veterans and extend some of the core youth, draft picks are 50/50 at best.

Is it more valuable to the Pats to tag him or let him walk? Right now everything points to him being tagged. In a month or so that might change.

And no, I like this fence, this is my fence, my fence is special.

We'll do both. Trade Cassel for draft picks then sign some players, either our own or others.
