Will we extend Wilfork this offseason?

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

Didn't Wilfork say at some point this season he wants to stay with the team?

I think you are right.
Come to think of it, he specifically said just that, did he not?

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

Let Seymour go and just sign Vince please.

Wilfork is essential for this team.. BB knows that and will keep him. If it comes down to a choice between Seymour and Vince, the choice is easy and a no-brainer. Vince - hands down over RS.

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

yeah, he is the main guy on defense.

He could be replaced if he demands too much... but, he should be seriously extended.

The Patriots need to wait until after they've removed the $15 million that Cassel's going to require for the franchise tag before making this move.

They have the "luxury" of waiting and logically will take that approach to use their available cap space for moves in free agency.

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

The Cassel situation shouldn't affect Wilfork. They can work the numbers to minimize his first year cap hit.

That's how I thought it would work out. In fact, the Patriots could actually clear up additional space for THIS coming season by extending him and that's the latest that Cassel's cap figure would be on our hands. I'd actually be pretty shocked if Vince is allowed to hit FA, unless they had an understanding like they appeared to have with Moss.

I think I may have hypothesized mid-season (after a low participation game by Vince) that they might not pay him what he could get on the open market. I no longer believe that. He played a lot down the stretch and was dominant.

I don't believe they'll extend Sey though. I think they'll let the season play out and see how his health holds out.

Isn't Wilfork coming off his rookie contract? I don't think you're going to get too much lower than that.

Wilfork's cap hit for this season is just over $2 million.

I know we're comparing different players at different positions, but two years ago Adalius Thomas' contract had him generated a $3 million cap hit for 2007.

And many feel that Thomas was underpaid two years ago. Aren't we talking Richard Seymour 2006 extension type money here?

If someone wants to hypothesize how much Wilfork will re-sign for and how that's going to bring his cap hit UNDER $2 million for this season, consider me VERY interested in that.

Yeah I didn't realize he was still on his first contract, seems like he's been around way longer. They could still extend him and get away with a similar hit to 2 mill for this season though I'd imagine.

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

I am presuming that when Wilfork reached his escalators for the 2008 season that increased his 2008 salary by $700,000 they also increased his 2009 salary by at least the same amount. Please note that there is a very good chance that they increased his 2009 salary by more.

I will try to make that clear on my cap page.

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

I expect he is not willing to negotiate anything until seeing how Albert Haynesworth fares. Haynesworth is a FA this year and should set the market. I would expect him to get something around 6 years $60M. I could see Wilfork settling for something slightly less than what Haynesworth gets, but more than what the Bears gave Tommie Harris - roughly around 6 years $54M. Just an early guess at this point.

Assuming that's the case I can't see any way to slice that up so his 2009 cap figure is actually UNDER what he's getting right now - i.e. less than $2 million.

Even if only $20 million is guranteed that's $3 million plus in signing bonus alone.

Still, it's not that they COULDN'T extend him while Cassel's on the books at $15 million - its just that they WOULDN'T. There's no added benefit that I can see to signing Wilfork at a time when that extra cap space would be better spent on their Free Agent targets.

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

That kind of comment means very little. Samuel said the same. I DO believe Wilfork. However, he will be one of the 2-3 highest paid DL playing for someone. The question is whether we will come up with the money. We have little problem doing that when the name of the player is Moss.

I think you are right.

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

I always pay attention to what Miguel says. He has informed us that under the rules for an uncapped year, you can't increase the pay in an uncapped year by more than 30%. So a Willfork signing would have to add $6-9$ million to the cap in 2009, to be able to pay him in 2010. Plus, in an uncapped year, Wlfork is not a FA; he needs 6 years to become one. He would be either an ERFA or most probably an RFA, not an UFA. :horn:

In contrast, re-signing Seymour even with a $ 1 million dollar raise, only adds one million (to $10 million) in 2009, and his 2010 salary can be still suitable. Plus he has more than 6 years in the League, and would be a UFA in 2010.

It all adds up to resigning Richard Seymour first, in 2009. I also think Seymour should have been a Pro-bowl D lineman this past season. He is simply better than Hayensworth, and was all the way back this past season.

There, Isn't much simpler when you pay attention to what Miguel says ??? :youtheman:

Re: Will we extend Wilfork this off season?

Here's a scenario concerning Vince Wilfork...knowing how the Patriots organization treats Football decisions as a business. What "IF" the kid from BC falls into our hands NT/DT B.J. Raji?:D Don't get me wrong i love Big Vince and think he's a Stud but with Raj possibility. Wouldn't that be an economical solution if they are not going to Break the Bank for Big Vince. With many Teams switching to the 3-4 Defense Big Vince would be crazy to take the First Offer from the Patriots. For a 3-4 to be effective you need a Rock on the Nose. I would be shocked if the Patriots ain't thinking about of such a scenario. Also if push come to shove the Pats could us the Tag on Big Vince.
