The 'What If' Showdown: Are Ravens proof of old Browns' greatness in waiting? Cleveland, Ohio Sports News, Scores, Teams, Results & More - cleveland.com

newsome has a lot of nice things to say about BB
Newsome believes the old Browns would have turned into a powerhouse in Cleveland.

"I'm saying we would have remained a good football team because it would have started with Belichick," Newsome said. "And all of us were there together. You can't write the story without adding Belichick to it."

After being fired by Modell, Belichick repaired to former mentor Bill Parcells, spending one year with the Jets and three years with New England. Rather than succeed Parcells as coach of the Jets, Belichick, after 24 hours on the job, fled to New England to take over the Patriots in 2000.

As Newsome and the Ravens had their Super Bowl season, Belichick planted the seeds of a modern-day NFL dynasty -- three Super Bowl championships in his first five seasons and four Super Bowl appearances overall in nine years as coach.

Belichick teamed with Pioli to build the New England championship teams while Newsome ascended to GM with the Ravens.

"You're talking, what, five Super Bowls between us?" Newsome said.

It's all speculation, though, how that group would fit together over time. Would Pioli have been the Browns' GM or Newsome?

"I will say this, Bill was giving me more and more responsibility and entrusting me with it," Newsome said. "Art and [former team executive] Jim Bailey were willing to pull the trigger six months after [the move] happened. It may not have happened right away, but Bill was entrusting me with a lot more and everybody was growing.

"All of us would have been together -- Bill, Scott, Phil, me. I feel I would have continued to gain more and more confidence with Bill and more authority."

I've been hearing more praise and name-dropping of BB this past month alone than in the past 8 years total, I think.

Writer didn't get his facts straight......I believe it was the other way around, 1 year with the Pats and 3 years with the Jets......

BB has been switched from person non grata, to the level where he should have been all along.. how could he be such a bad person last year become such a great________(insert word) this year.

He didn't switch in everyone's mind. Check this:

Good riddance, Belichick. I wouldn't have him coaching my Browns no matter what. Aside from being a cheater, he's also the guy who waived Bernie Kosar. You don't belong at Cleveland if you treat a hometown hero like that. I'm glad Bernie got a Super Bowl ring with the Cowboys. Would've been better if he could've gotten one with the Browns.

At least he spelled riddance correctly.

I think when you go 11-5 with a guy who hasn't done **** since HS, you win 3 super bowls, you're immortal.

It is uncanny. Last year use of Belichick's name was the equivalent of dropping an f-bomb (akin to Childress' "Belichick-esque" crack made before he was embarrassed out of the playoffs).

... rock and roll ...

As long as BB is the guy here, we will ALWAYS be in the hunt each and every year.

Bank on it, even if the dollar is corkscrewing downward fast!
