Peppers won't sign long-term deal with Panthers - WRALSportsFan.com
Peppers won't sign long-term deal with Panthers

Charlotte, N.C. — Julius Peppers wants out of Carolina.

The four-time Pro Bowl defensive end has decided he won't sign a long-term deal with the Panthers and wants to play in a 3-4 defense

His agent, Carl Carey, said Saturday that Peppers hopes to play for another team to "reach his full potential."

....

I was stoked when I read this.

I work with a Panther Fan. This guy has been telling me for years the Panthers needed to Get rid of Delhome.

Well the other day he told me that Peppers is a free agent and that word he was hearing was that Peppers did not want to play for the Panthers anymore.

I jokingly told him I would give him Cassel for Peppers and he looked a bit intrigued.

Then today I read this.

I think this is the ideal trade.

This would be a win win for both Franchises in my opinion.

Of course for us he would play outside linebacker. But could you imagine having Peppers and Thomas as your bookends???? This alone would improve the Pats passing defense infinately.

I would do this deal in a minute!

What do you guys think.

How about no?

As in, I cannot see that ever happening.

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Definitely an intriguing idea, but does Peppers have any experience in the 3-4? What kind of salary would he be looking for?

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Carolina may franchise him at a cost of $16+ mill. If I were him, I would sign that in a second and go through the process again next year. (Like Walter Jones did in Seattle) He is a proven commodity, still young, that could max his dollars each and every year, verses taking the safe long term contract with say $30 mill guaranteed

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Absolutely. Pep' is a beast. Plus I've been teasing my buddy for years about Peppers coming to the Pats, demanding to be put into the Hall as a Pat, etc. It would be the ultimate. Panther fans are wicked easy to rustle.

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

i actually had a thread started about this post last night, but decided at the last minute not to post. its an interesting idea. all depends of course on the ability of Peppers to convert into a 3-4 DE or OLB, something i dont believe hes done in his career. I didnt post it though, because I think in the end, it will cost too much money to have him signed, something we probably will be unwilling to do

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Who would you let go to make room for him -- Seymour?

Now I have not taken a look at the cap ramifications.

But my thinking is that if the Pats are willing to take the 14 Million dollar hit for Cassel, the would be better served using that Money for Peppers. Of course this may not be realistic, but as I said in the title, this is just speculation on my part.

I would think if Peppers signed a long term deal here, year 1 would be less then a 14 mil cap hit.

Peppers wants to be traded to a 3-4 team??? [merged]

Did you see this? Panthers need a QB pretty badly....

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

The transition is the worrisome thing. It would have to go brilliantly to be worth it and after throwing the money and QB away, it would suck for it to fail.

I guess he's changed his mind, he has said on previous occasions that he doesn't want to play for a three four team, also, I think he fits better on a 4-3 team anyway. An intriguing prospect would be if the Ravens replaced him with Suggs.

If he could play a Mcginnest type role I would be all for that. Otherwise, I think we are fine at DE. Our priorities should be DB and Vrabel future replacement with possibility of taking significant snaps from him this year.

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

Posters on other boards are emphatic that this guy is lazy, lacks the motor elite DEs/OLBs possess, and takes plays off. Talent without desire, if true, is not BB material.

Well, if we're going that route, we could always cut Jarvis Green loose to eliminate his cap hit but what would be the use of having Julius Peppers, Richard Seymour, and Ty Warren on the roster at the same time? None. Plus, I like Seymour and Warren a lot more than Peppers at this point. If we're going to sink money like that into signing Peppers, we might as well work out deals with Seymour and Wilfork.

I, for one, predict that Peppers is either a Jet or a Brown by 2010. I, for one, pray that he's not a Jet.

Agree with Sarge that on a long term deal they could fit Peppers in at way under the $14M+ that would initially be designated for Cassel. Peppers would seem to be too big to play OLB, listed at 6'7", 283; if he was quick enough in coverage it would be intriguing for sure, that is some crazy wingspan.

Re: How about Cassel For Julius Peppers - My Speculation

New England needs an ILB starter this year, not an OLB. Vrabel and Thomas are the starters on the outside.

Even if the Pats do franchise Cassel, that doesn't mean that they're willing to take the $14M cap hit. Just means that they think they can work out a sign-and-trade to get some draft picks.

This is the exact role I was thinking!

He is very fast for his size. Extremely athletic.

I don't think he would do well as a 3-4 end. Holding the point of attack would be a waist of his types of talents, and I'm not even sure he could do it.

In fact, I just assumed he would be looking to make the transition when I read he wanted to play in a 3/4.

I realize there is a risk, but what the hey, it's the offseason.

We didn't get much of a pass rush this season.

I have hopes for Guyton as well on the inside.
