Can Charlie leave ND and return to Pats as OC?

Pardon the dumb and obvious question but before getting to 'will this happen,' does Charlie have a clause in his contract with ND that allows him to opt out for NE?

Why would he forfeit approx $24 mil? He signed a 10-yr, $40 mil deal in 2005. ND is probably wishing he does so they are off the hook for the rest of the contract.

If he were to signal a willingness to negotiate a buyout to leave early, it can probably get done. So the question is - has anyone heard whether that's something he's considering? I know that he and TB are close; what if Tom were to ask Charlie to come back as OC and win some more Super Bowls?

This is ultimately the main reason that he wasn't fired by Notre Dame this season.

If Belichick wants to pay him $24 million guranteed I'm sure he'd be happy to leave, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Finally, don’t rule out the college ranks — specifically Notre Dame. As John Taylor points out at CFT, the availability of Gruden could prompt the folks at South Bend to fire Charlie Weis and hire Gruden, once Touchdown Jesus is fitted with sufficiently large earmuffs.

Notre Dame didn't fire Charlie for one reason and one reason only this year.

Urban Meyer will not leave Florida before Tim Tebow does.

Urban has one more year to coach Florida, and then he's off to South Bend to take over the reins until he retires.

This is another insane thread. Why would Charlie Weis leave his dream job, no matter how rough the waters have been, forfeit tens of millions of dollars, to take a DEMOTION to OC instead of head coach of one of the most storied teams not just in college football history, but in SPORTS HISTORY?
